Fall Color Crush: Lava Falls

I’m continuing with my series on color trends for fall 2022, and today we’re crushing on a bold orangey-red called Lava Falls.

one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine // ten // eleven // twelve // thirteen // fourteen // fifteen

Here’s how the Pantone Fashion Color Trend Report describes it:

Lava Falls, an impassioned orange red with a captivating presence.

It was a little bit challenging to find products in the exact shade represented by the Pantone color, but I think these are all pretty close, and at the end of the day, it’s not an exact science anyway. The nice thing about this color is, you can find it in warm and cool tones, so everyone can wear it.

I have always liked shades of red, and it looks good on me, but I haven’t worn it much in recent years. I’m looking forward to adding a couple pieces to my fall wardrobe.

A big trend right now is to wear monochromatic looks in bold color palettes, so you can totally wear Lava Falls with other shades of red. But I’m more likely to pair it with neutrals like olive, camel, black, and denim.

However you choose to wear it, there are lot of options available at all price points. I rounded up some of my favorites below.

  1. A little off the color topic here. I’ve been wanting to ask if you would put together a post about how to wear skirts abs dresses in the winter. I’m great with bare legs in the fall, but it’s too cold here in the winter. I’m not sure how to pull together skirts, tights, tall or short boots. Thank you!!

      1. Is it really that easy? I’ve work black tights with black boots, but don’t know what to do when black isn’t a match. Do the skirt and tights match? Tights and boots? I look forward to the post?

  2. This color looks sort of like a bright rust to me, which I can get into. When I click the link for No. 15, I get shoes instead of a dress.

  3. Love the color series – especially for bold colors – that way everyone can find something that works for them. Also like the save/splurge series. Some items are worth investing in and others maybe not. For example, I got a budget pair of clogs to see how I like them before spending money on a quality pair that I can wear to my casural work environment where I try to stand at least half the day.

  4. Now, this is a color I can get into. Red is one of my best colors, but I do lean more blue-red than orange-red. I don’t know why I don’t have much in my closet, except like you said, it hasn’t been popular lately. I will probably get the GapFactory sweater, and I am thinking about one of the dresses. The pants are cool, but is corduroy even trending? And red jeans are out, so I was just wondering…

    1. I think colored pants area coming back this fall since color is a thing, but like everything else, they will be styled a little differently. I am not hopping onto that train quite yet… I prefer a more understated look.

  5. I love, love, love red. It has been hard to find red pieces recently. It makes me happy that Pantone picked a red. I do hope there will be more blue reds instore. The orange reds (rusts) are more suited to an autumn palette.

  6. How to wear skirts/dresses in the winter is a great topic. I have a camel above the knee length corduroy skirt. Black tights look off to me. A post with ideas would be appreciated.

  7. Love the colour crush series. Red is apparently one colour everyone can wear you just have to find the right shade. For me with my cool (read ice cold) undertones I won’t be doing this warm red. Red is one of my signature colours and I will continue wearing the pure reds and those leaning toward purple and blue. Thankfully it looks like stores understand and I am seeing lots of shades out there. I just wish there was a better way to see colours when shopping on line. Descriptions don’t seem to work. Thanks again for this series. Great info and so much fun!

  8. While this is not one of my signature colors, every time I wear my bright red dress and ruana, I’m told that it’s my color. Guess I need to wear it more often!

  9. I like the fact that some of the pieces are not a bright red but more muted! I’ve worn red but prefer it not so bright..Love the idea of save vs splurge 🙌🏻

  10. Great post today! I’m a red girl and I really like the belt and the handbag. Thanks for all you do. I just happen to be on trend as far as the martini olive green, the rust and burgundy! However I was confused about animal print not being on trend. 🙂 I am that girl too. I just bought a cute animal print blouse at the gap. Long sleeve cotton blouse.
I also have an animal print handbag in my collection, which I will use on occasion. Not to mention my Soma cheetah print no line underwear.
I guess we all like what we like right. LOL 🙂

  11. I love the Color Crush series. I am on a “nothing new in ’22” goal, but I am planning what few things I want to pick up in ’23. A felt hat is definitely high on my list, and the Maradji Burgundy Rancher is my style. I don’t think I’ve ever paid that much for a hat, but I have a few months to think about it. And the “Splurge or Save” posts are always a great idea. I definitely like the “Save” options better in today’s post.
