Fall Date Night Outfit: Woven Halter Top & Black Pants

Hello, friends. Happy Wednesday! We’re halfway there! Today I’m sharing an outfit I wore for a recent date night with my hubby when we went out to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.

We’ve been together for over 23 years, but I still like to dress a little bit special when we go out. Even if it’s a casual venue, I often wear something I wouldn’t typically wear to church or running around town.

I picked up this woven halter top at White House Black Market when I was shopping for my trip to South Carolina. I thought it was so cute with the band around the neck. It’s almost like wearing a choker, but it’s part of the top so you don’t have to buy another piece.

SALE ALERT >> Tops are currently Buy One, Get One 50% Off Full Price Styles at White House Black Market. That includes the geometric print shell I styled in this post. I also have this cold shoulder top, which is super cute, and I’m totally crushing on this striped knit hoodie.

The pleats at the shoulders and the back exposed zipper are nice details, and it’s shaped through the waist for a flattering fit. This top runs large. I actually bought the 4, and I’m usually a 6 or 8 at WHBM. They didn’t have the 6 in stock, and I wanted to wear it that night, so I just bought the 4. It fit fine before I washed it, but I do believe it shrunk up just a bit. These pictures were taken after it was washed. All that to say, you may want to size down one size, but probably not two!

I paired it with my favorite black skinnies and leopard heels. Burgundy and black is a winning combination anytime, and while it is a bit predictable, I still like it better than any other combination I tried on.

These jeans are amazing. They truly do lift and tuck and give great shape. They’re also the perfect length for me. I love a 29-inch inseam, and the narrow 10 1/2-inch leg opening is also just right. I don’t like it when the leg opening is too wide. I encourage you to spend time trying on different styles until you determine your perfect fit, and then write down the measurements so you can shop more efficiently in the future. It is also possible to have a tailor tweak a pair that is close but not quite right.

These are spendy, but they’re a classic that I will have in my wardrobe for years. For less expensive options, Kut from the Kloth makes a nice pair for $79 (size down), and American Eagle Outfitters has a great pair for $37.

These Frame 'Le Color' Skinny Jeans in Film Noir are super flattering and perfect for paring with leopard heels!

I didn’t want a necklace to interfere with the neckline of the top, so I went with bold earrings instead. I love these lace chandeliers from my Stella & Dot boutique. At $44, they’re not a huge investment, and they really do jazz up a simple outfit. I also wore the Stella & Dot Pave Sphinx Cuff and Ring.

I carried my Louise et Cie Jael Shoulder Bag. I love this bag with a dressier outfit. It’s easier to carry than a clutch, but it’s still delicate enough to work for a night out, and the unique pull lock flap closure is a fun detail.

I could have worn my black suede pumps or even the nude ones, but I decided to go with leopard pumps for fun. These leopard pumps are great because the heel isn’t super high. They’re on sale at Nordstrom, but sizes are limited. I also found them at 6pm.com, but the price isn’t quite as good.

Wouldn’t this top also be cute tucked into a pencil skirt? I can also see it with dressier black pants for a more formal occasion. I just bought these scuba skinny pants, and I really like them. I wore this outfit to dinner on a mild fall evening, but when it gets colder, I’ll throw a leather jacket on over top.

  1. I do love this choker trend lately!! My mom even got in on the action recently—I was so proud of her!
And the leopard shoes are absolutely “purrfect” (sorry…couldn’t resist) with this outfit!! I love a little print in most of my outfits and this print kills it!!
The top doesn’t look small in these pictures—FYI!
Isn’t date night fun? I hope you had a great time!

    1. It’s just a little snug through the chest area now, and the pleats don’t lay quite right. I do think if I sized up, it would need to be tailored through the waist. I wish I had time to tailor things before I post to the blog. I would have most of my shirts nipped in a bit at the waist if I could, but it’s time consuming and expensive, so I usually don’t bother. 🙂

      1. You would be surprised how easy and quick this is to do yourself with sewing machine. For instance, I purchased the Free People cowl neck top in two colors you styled in a recent post. When I received them, I though they looked slightly ‘tentlike’ so I straightened the silhouette. Rarely do I buy something that is perfect all over, I guess because no two of us are the same, lol.

  2. Very nice outfit Jo-Lynne! Thank you for showing us how a little pop can go a long way, and really pull an outfit together. Have a great day!

How’s the on-line school working for your daughter? I hope it suits her perfectly.

  3. I love this color for fall and really like the “choker” detail on the top. This color looks great on you and I love the pop of the heels. I really have to invest in a pair this year! My husband is headed down to the US for a trade show later this month, so I might put this on his list 🙂
