Fashion Over 40: Daily Mom Style 08.19.15

Happy Wednesday! This week is flying by, it’s crazy. I cannot BELIEVE that school starts for us in less than two weeks. I know some of you have already gone back to school, but I simply can’t wrap my mind around that.

Fashion Over 40: Summer Outfit Ideas

This is my weekly post where I share some of my daily outfits, but I have to confess, I’m getting really tired of summer clothes. I’m not tired of summer, mind you. I will take the warm and the sun as long as I can get it, but I’m feeling very uninspired in the outfit department this week. A lot of what I’ve been wearing is repeats because, well, my closet is only so big, and I only have so many clothes. I mean, I have plenty, I KNOW, but there’s not much new to show you until we get to our 26 Days of Fall Outfits series, which is launching on September 1st. That should be a ton of fun.

26 Days of Fall Fashion Outfit Ideas

Meanwhile, here are a few outfits I wore this week. My goal is to feel good and look put together without being fussy, and I post my outfits here to inspire other moms out there to take a little extra time for yourself in the mornings so you will look and feel your best all day. Nothing I wear is particularly fancy, but adding a few accessories and putting on some makeup helps keep the dreaded mom frump at bay. At least, I hope so!!

I wore this embellished tee and jeans one day last week to get my hair cut and colored. My hair salon is always cold, so I wore jeans. These are my favorite skinny jeans because they’re not super duper skinny. I don’t like it when jeans hug my ankles; I feel like it makes me look like an ice-cream cone. I have them in this Topeka wash and as well as the Milk (NOW ON SALE!)

The Flag Tee came from Kohl’s. I love their Rock & Republic line, although I didn’t notice this tee had skeletons on it, or I probably wouldn’t have bought it. Oh, well! I’m sure no one else notices either.

The bold Silpada Half Moon Earrings compliment the shirt, and I just wore a simple silver beaded bracelet and my black Orthaheel sandals.

I wore this navy and white twist trim tank with my white jean shorts this time. I think I prefer it with the navy ones (shown in this post; also 50% off right now!) but this is nice for a change. It’s a bit more casual of a look. White sandals and gold accessories keep it crisp.

This simple t-shirt and shorts works because the colors are nice together and each piece is classic but fits well. Great style is 80% about fit and proportion. Both pieces are from Ann Taylor. I love Ann Taylor because they make quality products, and I got both of these pieces on sale so they were actually budget-friendly as well.

The City Shorts I got last summer, but they still carry them, and they are 50% off right now, making them only $22, so if I were you, I’d grab a pair! I actually have them now in black, white and navy. Although my white ones are too small, so I’ve got a good mind to order them right now in my current size. If only I knew what size I’d be next summer… lol. I guess this is what you call a first world problem. If you like a longer length, these Metro Shorts are nice too (and also on sale).

The tee I love as well because of its traditional styling and heavier than average fabric. This is one of the few tops I still wear untucked, and it is very forgiving. I went with neutral wedge sandals (similar) and a neutral bucket bag, although I think my leopard wedge sandals would have been super cute with this as well. If you’re thinking of ordering the Reid Wedge Sandals, you will probably want to size up. They definitely run small.

For accessories, I chose some of my Stella & Dot pieces with coral in them. The Coral Cay Earrings are sold out, but these Hibiscus Chandeliers are similar and would work just as well. Notice how you can remove the bottom piece to make them smaller. I love the 2-in-1 earrings, more bang for your buck! The R Bracelet is still available, and it’s a great versatile piece to have. It has both coral and pink in it so it goes with both, or it jazzes up a simple white and denim outfit nicely too.

I wore this outfit to church on Sunday because I was in the nursery and I wanted to be casual. I did take off the long necklace so the kids didn’t grab it, but I threw it back on to go out to eat afterwards. This outfit is super simple, but sometimes simple is all we have time for. Hopefully the accessories keep it from being too drab.

And finally, I wore this outfit to go to the mall with a friend and later on to host a movie night at home.

Fashion Over 40: White Tee + Denim Jean Skirt

This Madewell jean skirt is ALMOST sold out, so if you’ve had your eye on it, and you’re a size 28, grab it while you can! ShopBop also has a few of the smaller sizes left. It is SO incredibly soft and comfortable. It stretches and moves with me but doesn’t bag out.

The white top was from White House Black Market last year, and I have no idea where to find anything quite like it. I really like the knotted hem. But you can still replicate this outfit with any white top and jean skirt. I love simple, neutral outfits like this.

These Alex & Ani bracelets are fun to layer. I’ve had the charm bangles for a while, but they recently sent me the Sea Glass Uncharted Voyage Wrap and Sea Glass Odyssey Beaded Bangle. I love the teal and brown tones, and they are delicate enough that you can stack several together.

I wore my gold platform wedge sandals for the second part of the day — not to the mall, although these are actually super comfy and easy to walk around in. My 12-year-old daughter thinks I look ridiculous wearing them. Maybe I do look like an old lady trying to look too young, but I like them. So there! Ha.

  1. There is no way I could wear those gold sandals. Because I would be wrenching my ankle, LOL. They are so cute though, and if you can wear them, then you should!

    1. I love your outfits and I get great ideas from your blogs. I like how you find other versions of clothes at a less price and I loved your review of Loft. I remember reading a bog about how you finally gave in and went up a size, man I can relate to that. I also like how you teamed up with Cyndi you both are great stylists. Thank you for all you do. Oh I agree about the shoes I would wear those and I am fifty something.

      1. Thanks for your kind words, Sharon. Yes, going up a size is never ideal, but I think with age often comes a new dress size. 🙂 It’s best to embrace ourselves the way we are. 🙂 Glad you like my fun shoes. It’s always nice to know that I’m not totally off the mark. I’ve always liked shoes that are a bit unconventional. 🙂

  2. I guess the good thing about living in UK is that we don’t have to wear our Summer clothes very often. I love your coral tee, my favourite colour plus your sequin top is beautiful on you.
