How to Level Up Shorts and a T-Shirt

Hi, friends! I’ve got more summer fashion to share with you today. We shot this look last week before leaving for Maine, and it might be my favorite summer look so far this season!

The addition of the straw hat, color block tote, and simple jewelry elevate a simple pair of shorts and a t-shirt into an effortlessly chic summer look!

Unfortunately, these shorts are almost sold out in the Forever Olive, but I’ll link up some other olive-colored shorts at the end of this post. And if you like this exact style, there are lots of other colors to choose from.

These are what I’d call a leveled-up utility short. I love the zipper pockets and D-ring detail, and they have a rolled cuff with a 4 1/2″ inseam.

The fabric is a cotton/rayon/spandex blend, which makes them remarkably comfortable to wear. These shorts run true to size; I have the 6.

I paired them with this breezy linen dolman tee. I absolutely love the cut of this top — the dolman sleeve and relaxed fit makes it so easy to throw on with any shorts or pants. It’s currently 30% off with code LOVEIT.

The linen is lightweight and breathable, and it doesn’t wrinkle as much as you might expect. I wore it traveling to Maine all day and then out to dinner that night, and it held up great. The top is also true to size, and I have it in the small.

I’m not much of a hat girl, but I ordered this one from Madewell, and I was surprised by how much I like it. It’s also available at Nordstrom.

This hat really takes the simple outfit up a notch, and I think it works in so nicely with this color block tote. I have the hat in a M/L.

Carrying a straw tote is a great way to make your summer outfits more chic and intentional, and they tend to be pretty affordable. I love the white/tan/ivory combo in this one, since I wear so many neutrals, especially black.

And then these black slide sandals with the woodgrain block heel and modern square toe tie into the overall color scheme of the look as well.

I really like the subtle curved shape of the band, and the contrast of the black leather and woodgrain heel. They run true to size, as well

I kept my jewelry simple, with a layered pendant necklace and this delicate chain bracelet from Victoria Emerson. I love how she’s expanding her line to include other styles.

This bracelet combines a box chain and ball chain with a ring detail in the middle.

And the 14 carat gold plated necklace features a palm tree theme for the perfect summery vibe. This necklace has a 2″ extender, so you can adjust the length to your liking.

Finally, I added these Kendra Scott hoops and my favorite black cat eye sunnies to complete the look.

  1. Thanks for taking the time while on vacation to post about the Vince sweaters on sale. I was able to snag one–the other I wanted only had one size left in the color I wanted. But at least I have the one on order!

  2. My best friend bought me that Madewell hat for my birthday and I LOVE IT! I’m not a hat girt either, but I have been looking (and trying) several straw hats over the years. The hat is absolutely perfect and it looks great on you! I always look forward to an opportunity to wear it.

  3. Love this so summer look! Thank you for the Gown recommendation too. Hope you All enjoy your last day in Maine and a safe drive home.

  4. Enjoy your last day in Maine! Hope it is relaxing! We live in South Jersey and make the trip to New England regularly. We always take the Tappan Zee (yes, I know it now has a new name!!) and never the George Washington Bridge (ok, we did take it once and said “never again”!!) HAHA! I love your hat, and I am a hat girl! Love a great straw hat or baseball cap in the summer to protect my face and my hair from the sun. I also love the olive/black combo. Safe travels.

    1. Yeah, I like baseball caps but I never wear this style. It really is cute, though. Maybe I’ll start wearing it.

Funny, we usually suck it up and take the GWB — anything to cut a few minutes off our trip.

  5. Love this look on you. Sooo cute. You should wear hats more often, they look great on you. Enjoy your last day of vacation but yes keep an eye on the storm. I hope Paul is ok. ….a shame to be sick on your vacation. You anticipate vacation for so long and then it’s over in a flash huh? With the NSALE so early it pushes Fall too quick in my mind. Summer just began. :).

    1. Thank you. Yeah, it stinks to be sick on vacay. And I agree, too soon for fall. I would prefer they do this in August, but I’m always glad I have these pieces when fall does arrive. Maybe it’s because I have band kids and they start practicing at the beginning of August, but fall always seems to come sooner than I think it will.

  6. May I have a link to the crossover ring in this post, I love the classic design, not too over the top. Thanks for the post and that you took time over vacation to share others with us.

  7. Could you and Cyndi do a Fall series? It helps to see things on. Maybe even if 1-2 days a week. The Spring Monday one adding another blogger was fun. 🤗🌷

  8. Wow, you look so stylish and put together! I might have to order that hat! Thank you for the tip on the Vince sweaters—I was able to snag the first one you mentioned, in the light blue. I liked the striped one, but my size was sold out.

  9. Fingers crossed. I ordered the hat (which I love), seeing that it comes in two sizes. I have a “pin head” haha! so I can never find hats that fit me. I hope this one in the S/M fits (I measured my head to check) will work. Great outfit! Glad you are home safe.
