How to Pair Navy and Denim

Hello Monday! Today let’s talk about how to pair navy and denim.

I tend to pair my navy tops with white bottoms, especially in the summertime, but wearing navy with denim can create a low profile look that is effortlessly chic.

HOW TO PAIR NAVY AND DENIM

This split neck mixed media top is from LOFT, and it’s currently 40% off with code HBDUSA. It has lots of pretty details like the shirred split neck and shirred back yoke, cap sleeves, and a crinkly texture in the front. (The back is a soft woven fabric.)

It runs true to size, and also comes in petite and plus sizes. I have my usual small.

When pairing navy with denim, I usually go for some contrast… although every once in a while, I do pair navy with a darker denim for a more formal feel.

In this case, I chose these Kut from the Kloth boyfriend shorts in a medium blue wash. You can get them at Evereve and KutfromtheKloth.com, and they’re TTS. I have the 6.

They have a relaxed fit and a cuffed raw hem with some subtle distressing, which keeps the look low-key and casual.

A Stylish Way to Wear Navy and Denim

As with any simple outfit, accessories are key to making it look intentional, and I like to incorporate some juxtaposition to keep it interesting. My jewelry and sandals keep the look neutral while adding a touch of glam to the otherwise casual look.

These fringed earrings give the look a bit of a boho vibe, and I like how the white and gold pops against the navy top and my dark hair.

I also wore these stretch bracelets in shades of white and gold, and I finished the look with metallic flat sandals.

The raffia wrapped buckle is a fun detail, and they are very comfortable with a memory foam footbed — perfect for wearing when you’re entertaining friends or will be on your feet a bit.

In fact, this is exactly the sort of outfit I like to wear when having friends over in the summertime. I wore a similar outfit last night to host a small going away party in our backyard.

Pairing navy and denim can seem boring, but when you’re intentional about the color combination and accessorizing, it can be a great way to create a low-key look that is relaxed yet stylish.

  1. Hi there!  Love the navy and distressed denim shorts combo!  My kinda outfit.  Hubby and I are making our way to Longwood Gardens today. Open to members now!  I have my mask, hat, and water!  Decided on a sleeveless shift dress to stay cool.  Have fun with Ozzy!  Also, I love your hair longer. Looks like it’s still in excellent condition. Mine gets limp and straggly when I let it get too long.

    1. Have fun at Longwood! We love it there.

Yes, I have always liked my hair a little longer, but it’s been so thin in recent years, I couldn’t grow it. It was getting better, but now I’m losing a lot of hair again, so I hope it doesn’t thin out on the ends. I really like this length.

  2. Question: if you were to replace the shorts with jeans, and couldn’t wear open toed shoes or sandals, what shoes would you wear?

  3. You look fantastic, as always! I love, love the details you give in your posts on why something works/looks good. Some bloggers seem to just show pictures of themselves and say ‘I like this’—not helpful! I’ve noticed some don’t answer questions in the comments and you’re great about that too. Thank you for all of your hard work! You do it right, and you do it well.😊

  4. Hi Jo-Lynne,  I love this look! Navy and a nice faded denim is my favourite low key but pulled together look that always works! I just wish there was a Loft in Ontario Canada! I did a Old Navy haul yesterday and bought one of the T’s you styled! Love it! And a sundress and nice sleeveless t and pretty pale pink cardi for those cool summer night! Thank you for the inspiration!

  5. I second what Mmasc said. I really appreciate how much effort you put into your blog. Also, I’m impressed with how you so graciously and frequently respond to your readers comments and questions. You’ve created a friendly, little community here, which is so nice with all the hard stuff that is happening these days. Have you ever watched When Calls the Heart? You remind of Elizabeth, the main character. I hope that’s not weird to say and I mean that as a compliment. 😊

  6. What a great casual outfit that you look fabulous in!  I hope your PT appointment went well.  The spine doctor is setting me up for weekly hands on PT, after I have another injection next week.  Due to it being close to a 1 hr drive, I told him I will do once a week.  I understand your feelings about Ozzy.  Y’all gave it the old college try!  Friends and family want us to get another dog, but they are now walking in our shoes, so they don’t understand why it’s not something we need to do.  Enjoy the rest of your day!

  7. Thank you for this post, Jo-Lynne! Navy is my go-to neutral as I look terrible in black and never wear it on top. Your tutorial on how to wear navy in an effortless chic way is so helpful and I totally agree with Mmasc, you are the best blogger. My husband and I had to make a very difficult, but caring, decision 3 weeks ago to have our little dog put to sleep. Toby was 10 and

  8. and the vet said that he was experiencing liver failure. I am still dealing with the loss as Toby was my shadow and followed me everywhere. Without Toby around, my cat has come out of the woodwork and is making his presence more known. Like Savannah, Finn seems happier. I hope you and Becca get some solace and enjoyment from your visit with Ozzy. (Sorry about the 2 part response. My computer blipped and my first response was published before I was done.)

  9. I’ve always liked the look of a navy top with blue denim – I usually choose a light to medium wash denim when I put together an outfit like that. And amazingly I have yet to wear my white jeans this summer! Time to pull those out again before summer passes us by. Thanks for today’s post.
