I never really saw myself wearing Birkenstock clogs, but when I spotted this pair with the rivets, I was inexplicably drawn to them. I rely on my Birkenstock Madrid Slide Sandals all summer long, so suddenly the Boston Clog felt like the perfect cold-weather alternative. They’re comfortable, supportive, easy to slip on and off, and they strike that great balance of casual and cool.

When they arrived and fit perfectly, I was thrilled, and I’ve been reaching for them nonstop. They’re ideal for the days when I want to feel comfortable but still look pulled together. And based on some of the questions I’ve been getting, I know many of you are either trying to figure out how to style them or debating whether to try them at all. So today I’m sharing how I’m wearing my Birkenstock clogs this winter, along with a few easy outfit ideas and style tips to help you make them look modern and not frumpy all season long.
What Socks to Wear with Birkenstock Clogs?
Let’s get the most important question out of the way first! Everyone always asks me what socks to wear with clogs and other open shoes in the fall and winter.
There are some styles I’ll happily skip once it gets cold—loafers and ballet flats, for example. I don’t personally care for either of those with socks, although that look is definitely trending at the moment. If it’s your vibe, this is the season to rock it with confidence!
But clogs actually work really well with socks because their chunkier style makes the combination look intentional, not like you’re forcing a warm-weather shoe into winter, and the Birkenstock Boston Clogs are no exception.

The best socks for a current, winter-ready look are either a chunky crew sock (or a knee sock you can scrunch) in a marled wool or wool-like blend—just make sure they aren’t so thick that they crowd the footbed. Or, my personal favorite: a striped crew sock, like this 3-pack I picked up at Target.
As for color, you can match your shoes or your pants for a classic, low-contrast look, or choose something a little more playful if you prefer a whimsical vibe. I especially like the striped pairs because they’re subtle but still add a fun little touch.
How to Style Birkenstock Boston Clogs

Once you’ve got the socks figured out, styling Birkenstock clogs for winter becomes surprisingly easy. They have that relaxed, slightly rugged look that pairs well with casual layers, cozy knits, and most of the denim silhouettes we’re all wearing right now. The key is balancing proportions and keeping the outfit intentional so the clogs feel modern and not too sloppy or “crunchy granola”—a phrase my college friends loved to throw around back in the ’90s.
Here are a few of my favorite outfits with my Birkenstock Boston Rivets Clogs, along with a few more I’d like to try. You can probably recreate these with pieces you already have in your closet!
I’ve mentioned a few times that I’ve been struggling with denim and shoe pairings this fall, so I went shopping! I really like how relaxed straight-leg jeans pair with the Boston clogs.
These AG Brinley Mid Rise Straight Leg Jeans are super soft (almost like pajamas), and they give a long, lean leg line while still having that casual, slightly slouchy vibe that works so well with the clogs. The cashmere hoodie keeps the outfit cozy without adding bulk.

I also found a great, more affordable pair from Quince that works surprisingly well with my new clogs. They’re a little wider through the leg than the AG pair, but they have more structure, which helps balance the proportions. I especially like the light-wash denim with the taupe clogs, and the mauve top adds just enough color to warm up those cool neutrals.

And they pair nicely with wide-leg jeans, too! The key here is making sure the hem isn’t too long; you want it to skim the top of the shoe rather than overwhelm it.

While I like them best with the more relaxed styles, these clogs also work with slim straight jeans like my old favorite MOTHER Dazzler ankle jeans. I wore them last week with a cardigan-style sweatshirt layered on top, and I think it works. I also wore them yesterday with the same jeans and a navy cashmere hoodie. It’s the same one as the ivory one I’m wearing above, but I went with the medium in the navy.

Thanks for this! I was one who had questions about the socks & do like the look. I also recently got a pair of the Quince jeans in the washed black color & I’m a fan! It’s nice to have the 3 different length options & the jeans are nice & stretchy but keep their shape.
I’ve been a Birkenstock girl for 20 years. (They were recommended to me by a podiatrist during treatment for plantar fasciitis)I’m glad I’m in style now ! I have many sandals and the Buckley clog. I recently bought the black Boston rivets at your recommendation and I do love them. Just ordered the socks too. I wear them with everything and all styles of jeans. Hoping I can hide them under work pants too! if someone is new to the footbed, the ones with a soft footbed are a good way to start. They definitely break in easier.
I was shocked to see you had Quince jeans on. I bought a pair of straight ones there that look very expensive and fit great. I just ordered Mother flares and was so disappointed in the quality. They fit great but the seam on one leg is totally crooked and there is a hole starting on one of the pockets. I think I’m going to buy wide legs at Quince.
I think this post is going to make me finally buy! I’ve been wanting the rivet ones, but wanted to make sure I could wear them and wasn’t sure about styling. Thanks so much! I do wish they were waterproof like the Quince, but I love birks, so I need to get the real thing
There’s a store in my town that sells only Birkenstocks. If you ask, they will spray the shoes with waterproofing spray. I’m sure you can buy a can of waterproofing spray and do it yourself at home! I won’t trudge through puddles wearing them, but it does keep them from getting water spots on them if it’s wet out.
What waist and inseam did you order in the Quince jeans? Been eyeing those…
30 and 30
I’m a shoe person and I like these on other people but not a style for me. Love on you. My 34 yr. old daughter has been wearing them for years. She wears them all Fall and Winter with or without socks. Love your outfit with the striped socks and clogs. I think I’ll get that pk. of socks for my same color clogs I have. How come you don’t wear your clogs?
Could you do a post of 5 ways to wear faded black jeans. I have a pair coming from Quince and haven’t worn black for awhile so not sure how to style them other than grey and darker black. For some reason I don’t like with burgundy. They should just be like regular denim color but they throw me off some.
I second the request for ways to wear black washed denim!!! I have a pair and love them but need more ways to style them!
🙂
Thank you!!! Yay I was waiting for this post and am saving it!! I have similar styles to the denim you feature here so I am excited to try mine out!
PS I ordered the Bella Stretch Straight Quince jeans in faded black. I like more fitted fit than the relaxed ones on me. I think you’d like them too.
another post idea: your faves from Quince!
I used to wear the Merrell Arctic Ice clogs. I know they’re frumpy but were so comfy in the winter and they have great arch support. They were a lifesaver in the ice rinks when my son played hockey. I’ve considered the Boston clogs but they don’t feel like me. They look so cute on the young people but I feel like they’d be frumpy on me at 57. I might have to try them! Thanks for these suggestions.
Gina: You are too young to say that! I wear the Boston clogs and I’m 66! I normally wear them with those same Quince jeans, and I have a few different washes of Joe’s Jeans in an OG straight leg. I am short and small and many of the wide leg styles overwhelm me and nearly all are too long. The straight leg are a better choice for me.
Jo-Lynne: Thanks for this post. I have been wearing them, but was struggling with the socks question. This helped a lot. My Boston clogs are a dark brown, and I love them. They are from a few years ago. I love those riveted ones, though. I might have to get a second pair!
I love my Bostons and I am 69!I have been a Birks person for many years! My feet are happy!
I’m a big Birkenstock fan with about 10 pair in various styles. I have the Zermatt Premium clog in a gray tone. This is my 2nd or 3rd fall/winter with them and I wear them several times a week. I wear them with and without socks. They fit my casual life perfectly. I like the Zermatt style because it’s not as common. Like others have said, it’s nice to be in style but I’m sure I’ll be wearing my birks even it they aren’t.
This post is very helpful! I wear clogs a lot in the fall. The Birkinstock ones are very cute. I appreciate your including less expensive options. I might try the Quince ones; they look very nice and Quince has not disappointed me yet.
I’m also happy to see that Rowan Henley Sweatshirt again. I love mine, and I’m sure it will get a lot of wear this fall and winter.
I don’t dislike the Birks on you, but I won’t be wearing them. I think it’s because they remind me of Mickey Mouse shoes, being so round. I would rather wear my Ugg minis.
Can you do a post for cold weather event outfits, like how to look cute bundled up at an outdoor winter festival, for example? I’m also struggling in the boot dept. What can I get to modernize from my beloved Blondo Dagger boots that I bought from your blog in 2021?
Mickey Mouse, lol! Now I can’t unsee it. I need to dig my UGG Minis out of the basement. As for the Blondo Dagger… that’s a blast from the past! Those really were good boots. There are more modern looks for lug sole boots, if that is what you want to replace them. I like the Blondo Cammie but it’s pretty clunky. The Dagger was a little more refined. This one might be a little better. This Reformation pair is really cool, or this Vagabond pair. Or are you looking for a different style altogether?
I was thinking something practical for the weather and elements that was also a touch more refined since I’m not going to wear them in really rough conditions. But still a rugged look. Perhaps that’s looking for a unicorn.
I love the look of the clogs but prefer the comfort of the clogs from Rothy’s. Not sure if you have tried them??
I haven’t.
I started wearing Boston Birkenstocks 10 years ago to help with back pain. I use them as indoor shoes when they are new, and relegate older ones to yard shoes. Some of the newer styles, however, are tempting to wear out and about. I actually prefer them on you with the narrower leg bottoms.
I just don’t know about the Birks. Seems like it wasn’t that long ago, that I finally got rid of some dark brown suede clogs. I love Birk sandals but these clogs tend to make my feet look big and wide–and I’m small and medium. I also can’t help thinking that the rivets look like something on a little kids shoe. I do like that they are easy slip on and an easy grab to wear with jeans–so I’ll give it more thought. I did just order some taupe chukka boot-inspired lace-up booties–which I saw my daughter sporting the other day–they looked great with jeans and a nice low heel.
I’d love to hear your opinion on the Quince jeans. Happy? Is the quality good? I’ve been so curious since I see them all over Instagram.
The clogs are so far out of my comfort zone and personal style that I can honestly say I will never try them. 😁
They definitely don’t compare to MOTHER or Paige, but they seem to be a good value for the price point. They’re quite thick, but stretchy.
They do look very stretchy on the Quince models; almost too much. Thanks for sharing.
Honestly I think if someone wants a good denim jean at a lower price point, the Old Navy “Wow” Jean is really good. When I was teaching I bought a couple pairs of them for outdoor days, art, and field trips and always got asked what brand of jeans I was wearing. No one could believe I paid less than $50. In fact thinking about it now, I wish I’d kept a pair! 😄.
You should check them out to see what you think & then they could be an option when you link “save/spend/splurge” item options.
Thanks for all you do!
Good to know!
There’s nothing I like about Birks clogs. They remind me of slippers. They don’t seem feminine either. I’m also open to reading about all fashion styles. However, I’d rather wear fashion sneaks. I also would not wear socks with clogs. Not a fan of the Bella jeans, they aren’t flattering, even on the website.
Thank you for all you do. I so appreciate examples, links, ideas on how to keep my wardrobe fresh and appropriate for my age/body. I’m heading to Nordstrom to try on these Berks today. On another note, are the P448 sneakers current to wear? A couple years ago when you were styling them, I bought three pairs you posted. What’s the best way to style them now? Do you have any suggestions on how I could wear them today and not look dated or frumpy?
Sure! I did pass my last pair on just a few months ago but I’d wear them with wide leg crop jeans and a current looking top. I have a friend who wears hers with her wide leg crops and they always look really cute on her.
I “second” the old navy Wow jeans. I bought some ankle ones with button fly, high waisted in the spring. They are so flattering and grabbed for them a lot. But last time I was in Old Navy, and tried some on, something changed in the style/fit. ):
I’m just curious why, many times–the beginning of your post will say like 30 comments–but when I try to access and read them, there’s only 20 and it almost always just shows my post at the bottom? Its happened several times–am I not accessing your blog correctly because I have the the site saved on my header?
It sounds like you are seeing them correctly. The 30 comments includes the replies. And I have them set up to show up in chronological order, with the first comment first.
Thank you for all your in formation I definitely have found a new friend and shoe /fashion
I have never had a pair of Birkenstock shoes and I have been looking at the Buckleys. I wear a 6.5 shoe, so what size should I order?
I believe that’s a size 37.
Try a 6. They do come up on the large side. Also, the wonderful wide, deep toe box lets your toes spread naturally. If you have a really slim foot then go for the narrow fitting. Personally, I love the extra toe-space. SOoo comfy! Because your whole foot is supported they dont budge!
They are so unfeminine.
True! Not really the goal with Birks, lol.
I do not own a pair of birkenstock but I would love to have a pair so I am looking at the moment
You’ll never look back! Maybe consider the soft footbed, as a starter pair, but the ‘regular’ have always been instantly comfy, straight from the box. I have many different styles/colours/materials and all were as good. I’d always reccomend spraying suede/nubuck with a protective treatment.
I have more Birkenstocks in my closet year round than any other brand out there. While I usually buy mine when they are part of their Last Chance, I am about to go ahead and pay full price for the clogs with the rivets. They will fill a gap in my shoe options, and I know that they will last forever.
I love to wear my burk clogs barefoot with skirts in the fall and black tights and skirts in winter
That sounds cute and comfortable. I don’t wear many skirts at all, but they can definitely work together.
I have dresses for autumn/winter, and toning opaque tights My various coloured and finishes ‘Boston’s, in: Black, Midnight, Zinfandel, Mocca, look really great. Even try chunky, slouchy socks, if you’re young/bold enough! The ‘Big Buckle’ versions are another attractive alternative
Thank you for this post! I just got mine from Quince and I love them. Birks don’t work with my feet for some reason, but I am loving the style and comfort of these shoes. They are so versatile — I wore them with wide-leg jeans one day and straight jeans the next.
I too never thought I’d jump on the Birkenstock train but this Fall purchased a look alike water repellent pair with a bit of a platform. I love them, so comfy and squishy. I really love those striped Target crew socks and I’m also a knitter, so have some fun colorful striped handknit socks to wear with them. By the way, I’m a senior 70 year old “hippie” grandma but not crunchy 😊
I love Birks. I like the styles and the way they make my feet feel. This year I bought the Tokio suede leather taupe clog with the backstrap. It took a little adjusting and now they feel good (I had to find the right adjustments in the straps). I really like the look of the rivets on the ones you featured.
I bought a pair of blue Birkenstock clogs last year. I love the colour but find them very uncomfortable and often prefer to wear my sandals instead. Such a shame as I do feel they look good.
I’d love more styling ideas with these, especially cute socks you find and alternatives to basic denim styles. Just found your blog and love it!
