How to Wear the Crochet Trend This Summer: Real Life Outfit Ideas

I mentioned crochet in my Summer 2025 Fashion Trends to Know a few weeks back, but now that I’ve added a few pieces to my own closet, I thought it deserved a deeper dive. Turns out, crochet isn’t just for handmade blankets anymore!

This summer, it’s all about light, breezy textures and open-knit details that feel chic, not crafty. From sweater tees to sleek slide sandals, this trend is popping up in fresh, wearable ways that add just the right amount of texture to your outfits.

I have to admit, it wasn’t a trend I was immediately drawn to when I first saw it on summer style lists—but once I started spotting it in stores I actually shop at, I got curious. I tried a few pieces, and to my surprise, I found some I really like.

I ended up adding a couple crochet pieces to my summer closet, and I’m loving the relaxed, slightly boho vibe they bring to an outfit. If you’re curious about how to wear the crochet trend this summer, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite finds—plus I’m sharing how I’ve styled a few of them myself.

This Crochet Stripe Top from Gap Factory is a great way to dip your toe into the trend without going too far into boho territory. The sweater-tee silhouette and classic black-and-ivory stripe keep it timeless, while the open-knit texture adds just the right amount of interest. I styled it with white jeans in a slim bootcut silhouette and neutral slide sandals with woven straps, then finished the look with a black woven bag to keep things summery and fun.

A more subtle way to work the crochet trend into your summer wardrobe is through your footwear. These minimal slide sandals feature a wide crochet strap and a soft neutral footbed, and they pair beautifully with everything from jeans to dresses. I styled them here with a denim mini dress for an easy, laid-back look.

I’ve also worn them with cropped jeans and a striped blouse, and another time with the same jeans and a striped sweater tee. They’re one of those pairs that just seems to work with everything—an easy way to add a little texture and interest to even the simplest outfit.

Those are just a few ways I’ve been wearing crochet this season. If you’re ready to try the trend yourself, I’ve rounded up some current favorites below—from breezy tops to woven accessories.

  1. Love the crochet trend, it’s been trending in Southern California for a few years now but sometimes things are popular in one part of the country before another. I have a sweater almost identical to the top look but it’s long sleeve, again from 2-3 years ago, also bathing suit coverup dress and a few tanks – I think these looks are flattering on everyone if you like that vibe.

  2. I have purchased a few crochet pieces. I am drawn to crochet, but I know I have to keep it modern to keep from looking like Granny. One piece is in the same color scheme as your top, but is a cropped cardigan. I thought it would look cute over a black tank or black sleeveless dress. I have had a black Loft crochet cardigan for about 3 years now, and now it’s really trending. I bought a beige cardigan sweater, but it has long flared sleeves and I don’t quite know how to style it to avoid matronly. Ideas?

  3. My 19 yr daughter crochets. Be careful with purchasing crocheted pieces. Knitting is different from crochet and can be done on a machine. Crochet has to be done by hand. A crochet sweater will take many, many hours to make by hand. And when sold by a store for $58, you know the person who made it by hand is not getting compensated fairly. Because of that, the ladies in my household won’t purchase crocheted items from stores. Knitted items- yes. Crocheted items- no. A crocheted sweater made by hand like my daughter makes would be worth hundreds of dollars in time spent. Just be careful and think before you buy. Off my soapbox now!

    1. Interesting, I did not know that. I assume that is why so many “crochet” items don’t look like true crochet? Are they machine made to try to look like it? I wondered why so many pieces didn’t really look like crochet to me, but I figured it was cheaper to make somehow.

      1. They may be knit instead of crochet. You have to look at each piece individually to check. If it doesn’t look like crochet, it probably isn’t!

    2. I very much agree with you, so I only crochet for friends and family cause it is very labor intensive and some people don’t understand the amount of time you put in.

  4. Love this trend! Also, love your denim dress. Been looking for a sleeveless denim dress like yours. What size did you purchase and is it a heavy denim? Why is it so hard to find a denim or chambray dress? 😫
    Maybe a post/ round-up on them?

    1. Stacey ……I bought the Caslon Chambrey Shirt Dress(short sleeves with a small cuff to them) from Nordstrom and love it. I sized down a size and even the size two down could work. So I say it runs large. It’s so comfortable, not heavy and has side pockets. It has the high low hem, so alittle longer in the back. I believe it’s on sale now. It was over the weekend. I had to pay full price. Hope this helps

  5. I have a GAP multi-colored stripe crochet top from last year that I really enjoy wearing. It helps keep me cooler and is a top that elevates a casual outfit.

  6. What size are you wearing in the GAP denim tank dress? So cute on you and love those slide sandals. You are killing me. lol it’s hard to keep a freeze on my spending and wear my closet when you style cute things. lol

  7. I’m not sure the look is “me”, but I did pick up an open knit short sleeve sweater to try. I do love texture in clothing, though, adds visual interest. 🙂
