Wide-leg pants may be trending, but that doesn’t mean you have to wear them. Whether you find them overwhelming, hard to style, or just not your vibe, you’re not alone. The good news is, you don’t need to wear wide legs to look stylish or current.

If they don’t work for your body type, or they simply don’t feel like you, there are plenty of other options that still look modern and put-together. Today I’m rounding up some flattering alternatives to wide-leg pants that are easy to wear and feel just as relevant.
I actually like the wide-leg silhouette and wear it now and then, but I’ll admit, it’s not my favorite on me. Sometimes I’m willing to sacrifice a few flattery points for style points, but other times I just want to feel like the best version of myself, and that’s when I reach for one of these alternatives.
Flattering Alternatives to Wide Leg Pants That Still Feel Modern
I feel best in styles that are more fitted through the hips and thighs, even though more volume on the bottom is definitely having a moment right now. So I try to find silhouettes that offer a little of both—something that feels current but still works for my shape and styling preferences. That said, there are plenty of other options that aren’t quite as voluminous as a wide leg but still offer a relaxed fit. These silhouettes are worth exploring if you’re looking for something modern and comfortable without going full wide-leg.
Flares: The Perfect Balance Between Structure and Flow

If you want a little volume without going full wide-leg, a relaxed flare is a great compromise. It still offers some flow and movement, but with more shape through the hips and thighs, which many find more flattering.
You can go with a traditional flare like the pair I’m wearing above, which is fitted through the hips and thighs and flares out from the knee to the hem. Or try a relaxed flare, which has a looser fit up top and a softer flare through the leg. It’s a slightly more modern silhouette and a nice way to balance out fuller sleeves, structured jackets, or broader shoulders—without diving all-in on the wide-leg trend.

Cropped Bootcut: A Playful, Modern Take on Classic Denim

Pistola Lennon Ankle Bootcut Jeans (29) // Nation Ltd Marina Muscle Tee (M) // leopard flats (8.5)
Also known as a kick flare, this is a fun, modern silhouette that looks great with sneakers, clogs, or sandals. It adds a little personality to your outfit and works especially well in spring and summer.
You can find kick flares with a clean, finished hem like the pair I’m wearing above, or there’s also the step frayed hem, which is fun and leans more casual.

Slim Straight Leg Jeans: Polished, Versatile, and Universally Flattering

AG Mari; on sale at Bloomingdale’s (30) // navy sweater (S) // Dolce Vita t-strap sandals (7.5) // woven bag
This is a classic cut that always feels polished. I tend to gravitate toward ankle-length styles with a slim (but not skinny) fit. They’re easy to dress up or down and flattering on most body types.
I usually wear mine with sneakers or sandals in warmer weather, but they also work well with loafers and clogs. Because the leg opening isn’t too wide or too narrow, these jeans can handle a slightly bulkier shoe—like a lug sole loafer or platform sneaker—without throwing off the proportions. They’re also a great base if you want to play with bolder footwear or a more statement-making top.

Relaxed Straight: A Subtle Nod to the Wide-Leg Trend

Gap Factory 90s original straight (30) // GF shrunken tee (M) // Veronica Beard Via (8)
These have a slightly looser fit than a traditional slim straight-leg silhouette. Some styles feature a subtle bowing through the leg, offering a nod to the wide-leg trend without fully committing to it.
Relaxed straight leg silhouettes are often full-length, which can make shoe pairings a bit tricky. A low-profile sneaker (like a Samba) or a sleek ballet flat usually works best—anything too bulky can throw off the proportions.

Barrel Leg Pants: Curved and Tapered for a Fresh Silhouette

Gap Factory soft barrel jeans (29) // grey tee // Gola sneakers (7.5)
They aren’t for everyone, but barrel leg styles are definitely having a moment this season. The curved silhouette is roomy through the leg and tapers at the ankle, which makes them more wearable than you might think.
The key is to show a bit of ankle—if they’re too long, they can look heavy or awkward. (The ones I’m wearing above would look better if they were about an inch shorter.)
And once again, a low-profile sneaker (like a Samba), a sleek ballet flat, or a minimal slide sandal usually works best with this style of pant.

Always remember, you don’t have to follow every trend to look stylish. If wide-leg pants don’t feel like you, there are plenty of other options that still look current and put-together. If your favorite silhouette isn’t the trendiest right now, go ahead and wear it—just remember, how you style it makes all the difference.

This is a wonderful post with such great ideas! Thank you! I am not fan of wide leg trend-either there’s too much fabric, too tight in the hip area, and so on. Not really a fan. When dropping off some clothing at the consignment store, the saleslady mentioned there was a nice pair of Eileen Fisher Linen wide leg pants-tried on for fun and low and behold they looked and felt great. I wouldn’t say they are truly wide, just a more traditional pull-on linen pant. I bought them–$28. They are washed black color-best find ever after trying on so many styles.
That’s awesome! They sound like more of a traditional trouser, which I think is way more flattering than the exaggerated wide leg styles. Sounds like an amazing find.
Ana, could you share more details about those linen pants? They sound like what I’m looking for!
Hi Pat, the linen pants are a pull on style and are a washed black color, almost a dark washed navy at a distance? I am unsure what year they were made? But the top of the pants does not have elastic instead is a stretchy band of a soft cottony feel with the draw string inside of it then the rest of pant from the waist down is linen. If you need more help and I am happy to send a picture.
In the summer, I love the kick flare cropped or cropped bootcut flare or straight slim cropped ones since very petite. Plus in the summer I want to be cool and look put together and long jeans in the South would make you sweat to death in the heat and humidity. Tall people look so fashionable in the wide leg and they are blowing out of stores. Thanks for all the jean suggestions. I love them all!
I have tried a lot of barrel leg pants on, and truly the ones I love the most (in fact I have them in two colors) is the Athleta ones. Great shape and the fabric is awesome for the summer, although I think I could wear the black ones way into the fall. The waist is a little small, but I moved the button on mine and they are perfect. Give them a try I dont think you will regret it!
Good to know, thanks!
Michelle, They’re my favorites as well! Athleta nailed it!!
Another vote for the Athleta barrel leg pants. They are the only ones I have tried that I didn’t feel like a clown wearing.
Are we talking about these? I think I’ll order and try them.
Thanks for the reminder on the alternatives to wide leg jeans. I love the AG Mari. The slim straight crop just fits my body best and I reach for them more than the other options in my closet. What do you think about the Paige joggers with the zippers and elastic at the bottom. You showed them recently and I was surprised that they are still available. I still have mine but are they still current?
Yeah, they’re a little dated to me. I’m not really loving the jogger silhouette these days, although in a way they could read as a subtle barrel leg? I dunno… I passed mine on a few seasons ago.
Great comments about wide leg pants and alternatives. I like and own wide leg jeans but as you mentioned I think I feel my most authentic when I have a slimmer straight leg, boot cut or flare on. It just feels more like me. I tend to wear wide leg jeans for dinner out or other more dressier occasions. Thanks for all of the tips about styling – these are so helpful!
I’m with you, wide leg for my 5’3″ height isn’t my best look. I did find a Kut brand I like that is a longer wide leg with slimmer up top and I wear, but other than that, I lean toward the styles you showed up above all except the barrel leg. I won’t wear that. I don’t like the look. Have a nice Father’s Day weekend with your parents. It doesn’t seem you get to see them much, so I’m sure you are looking forward to it.
Hi JoLynne! Is the GF Shrunken Tee Shirts a thick or medium weight. And are they loose
or TTS. I really do need a couple of good white tee shirts. What do you think! Thanks!
I like it. I’d say it’s a medium weight and true to size.
A great post. My summer pants/jeans are a mix of not-too-relaxed wide leg, kick flares, and the always-works slim straight. I definitely like having a mix of silhouettes. Thanks for all the ideas.
While I enjoy wearing wide legged jeans at times, I struggle with having shoes that have a high enough heel to prevent them from bunching up on my footwear or dragging the floor. The real baggy pants, especially right under my backside, are far from being flattering on me. It can be challenging finding the footwear that looks best with the various leg styles.
Yes, I agree. Footwear/pant combos is tricky sometimes.
I leaned into the “trouser jean” version of wide leg. Not super voluminous, and a little more tailored. I love the look! Also love your other ideas here, all very flattering jean silhouettes. 🙂
Yes, that’s my preference, as well.
The Pilcro Adi jean from Anthro is a great wide leg jean, and it’s super flattering. It is such a comfortable and casual denim. It runs a little big so I would size down 1 size, (stretches out as you wear it). It comes in petite and tall lenths as well as regular length. Has a very 70s cool girl vibe. Let me know what you think!
Thanks for this info. I do not like a wide leg pant on my frame. I’m 5’2” and it just makes me look to boxy.
I gravitate towards the flares and the straight cut crops.
My only challenge is shoes! Hemlines and appropriate footwear confuse me always!
