I’ve been experimenting with a lot of fun looks lately, but when it comes down to it, this is what summer style looks like for me.
I spend most of my summer days at home with the occasional afternoon at the swim club so I get up and throw on a t-shirt and shorts almost every morning, but a t-shirt and shorts doesn’t have to look dumpy or plain Jane. As long as both pieces fit well and are flattering, all you have to do to turn a simple t-shirt and shorts into a complete outfit is add a few key accessories.
Let’s start with fit. This t-shirt is from Tapered Collection; in case you missed it, I styled a white one on Tuesday. This one is the tapered v-neck in midnight. I also have a tank and the mid-sleeve scoop neck in midnight, and both are great tops as well. These tees are made to compliment a woman’s figure, and the quality is outstanding.
I usually gravitate to white or blush as a companion to navy, but I also love pairing navy and olive. These mid-rise midi shorts are from Target, and I’m really impressed with the fit and quality for $19.99. (Hat tip to Alison at Get Your Pretty On for the inspiration!) They have a 4″ inseam, and they fit close to the leg without being too tight.
I usually size up in my shorts. I normally wear a 6 in pants, but these are a size 8 and the fit is perfect. These also come in a pretty pale pink.
Now let’s talk accessories. Because this outfit is fairly simple, I added mosaic drop earrings and a matching necklace. I don’t usually go so matchy-matchy with my jewelry, but in this case I like how these pieces work together. I also added a few gold bangles.
Don’t forget your handbag! I grabbed this stripe tote because I like how it brings more navy into the outfit and brightens up the look, and the handles coordinate with my sandals.
There are many great shoe options for this look — Converse Shoreline would keep it casual or flat thong sandals would also be cute.
I went with these comfort sandals from The Walking Company. I really like how the low wedge and the studded details elevate the look without being too fussy, and these shoes are super comfortable. I’d wear these with this outfit if I was going to the mall or somewhere that I’d be doing a lot of walking and wanted to look a little more dressed up.
As I said in yesterday’s post, an easy way to instantly update your look is with a stylish pair of sunglasses. These are the Maui Jim Orchid, and I love them. Large frames are trending at the moment, plus they’re practical because they provide better sun protection than smaller styles.
Without accessories this outfit would be quite plain, but now it is totally appropriate for running errands, getting together with a girlfriend for coffee, or pretty much any casual event you might have on your summer calendar.

Love how you styled this summer look!!

I discovered olive and navy last sumer and love it. Funnily enough I’m wearing a new discovery today of olive and grey. I’ve been admiring that necklace of yours for a while now. It’s gorgeous.
I threw on those olive shorts with a grey tee yesterday. I like that combo too!
I love olive and navy together. And I love a simple summer outfit like this! Great post! I hope you will me at Ladies Who Link Up party today!

Tell us your nail color. Love navy & olive.
I had CND Cityscape on my hands. I’m not sure what color I had on my toes. It was a Zoya – maybe Freja or Tris?
I love navy and Olive as well and just wore that combo to work on Tuesday. I found a super cute Nay t-shirt at DressBarn with gold pineapples on it! Wore it with Olive ankle pants and navy cardigan. Thanks for letting me know I am right on track Jo-Lynne! 🙂
*PS Wearing my white jeans to work today – woohoo so excited!
Sounds super cute!
I have to tell you thank you. You mentioned skirt shorts and I was?????? What are those.
Guess what. I bought one pair and went and got another the next day. Love to wear t short dresses in the summer and now I feel secure!!!!! Everything is covered :)))
You mean the slip shorts? Yes, I just ordered a pair too. LOVE them!
Thanks for another style that’s easy to wear! Ok my issue lately is being so distracted and scatterbrained that I’m doing things like wearing my yoga pants inside out,(happened twice) my cardi inside out, and even forgetting to zip up my jean shorts. I guess that’s what age and 2 teenagers will do to you! At least my 16 year old asked if I was planning to go out like that? Have a great day!!
Oh, my! It sounds like you have a lot on your plate, lol. Thank goodness for teenagers keeping an eye on us. Ha!
What a simple but very nice casual outfit Jo-Lynne! Im glad you and the girls had a few days without a male around controlling the remote! I too live watching HGTV, especially when international house hunting is on. That is an education in itself. Have a fantastic weekend! I will be getting a quick course on operating our tractor today. Oh boy!
I should watch more International ones. I am addicted to the Renovation ones. We buy them on Amazon Prime. I’m almost done with all of them, though. Sad.
I just watch the ones on through our Directv. The international ones are usually on late at night. It is so interesting how different the homes look, what is standard in them, and the cost of course. So, watching them really is educational from a social studies standpoint for the kids.
Love how you kicked this outfit up a notch. Lovin that jewelry! Are you a consultant with Stella and Dot? I just purchased a pair of olive skimmers, since I don’t wear shorts, so I”m happy to see this outfit inspiration! I was going to wear a navy/white stripped top with them, but maybe I’ll go for the solid top. Also loving that tote bag! Enjoy the weekend, hopefully this weather will break again!
I am a Stella & Dot rep. I LOVE their stuff.
Great casual Summer look! Love your sandals!!

Very nice and chic casual summer outfit! I too love watching HGTV, especially the international house hunting episodes. Supposedly I will be learning how to operate our tractor today. Oh boy! Have a great weekend!
Well that sounds like a challenge! Hope it went well. 🙂
I love love this outfit. Perfect for hot weather like here in Arizona. It’s hard to look put together with just shorts and a t-shirt but this does the trick! Heading to Target for shorts today! Love the shoes too! I recently purchased brown wedge heels from Payless that are a dupe for your Lucky Brand wedge you feature a lot but they were 1/2 the price! Yay me! Ha Ha. Thanks for the inspiration – so glad I follow you!
Jo-Lynne, I love this casual look. Olive is a great color to pair with anything, so I think you will get a lot of use out of those shorts. Love your cute bag too. Have a great weekend. – Amy

I had bookmarked that navy striped tote a couple of weeks ago when you first showed it. Went back to the link today and navy stripe is not a choice anymore. The red stripe is cute too, but navy stripe is much more versatile. I hope it comes back, sniff. (I knew I should have bought it back then!)
I know, I was so bummed when I went to link it in today’s post and saw that it’s gone in the navy/white. I really like the black/khaki one tho.
Love this combo! Everything fits very well, and the colors are great together!

I am so envious of women with “good get away sticks” to quote a line from Last Man Standing. That cracks me up. I’d love to wear a cute pair of shorts and a tee but sadly the cellulite devil took up residence on my thighs with a vengeance an no matter how hard I try, it won’t budge. All the sad faces go here!!!! Oh well, thank heavens for so many other cute options!!! Happy Friday!
LOL! You’re funny. Maybe olive crop pants would be a fun alternative. I also used to have an olive cargo pencil skirt I wore a lot that I liked in the summer. 🙂
Great minds think alike…I actually did just recently purchase the olive NYDJ rolled cropped jeans (which lucky for me being short I can unroll in winter????) I just need to remember to wear them! Have a great weekend!
Love the navy and olive together! I will wear this combo for a great summer look as well as at the end of summer, since, here in CT the idea of fall comes while the weather is still blazing hot.
Yes, it’s a great color combo for fall. 🙂
That is a cute bag! Temptation… it sure looks good with that navy tee too! And I love those shoes!
This is my idea of a perfect summer outfit….not too fussy but pulled together and intentional. Never underestimate the power of a well made, perfectly fitting t-shirt!! (And the right bra, but that’s a story for another day…..)
🙂
Haha, so true!
