Red, White & Blue: What to Wear for the 4th

Happy hump day, friends! I’ve got some more 4th of July outfit inspiration for you today. I’m styling two casual looks from Nordstrom.

If you opt for store pickup, there’s still time to order for the weekend, if you see something here you like. Otherwise, these pieces can be worn anytime this summer, and even into the fall.

This first look is for those who really want to look festive for the Fourth. There’s no denying the Americana theme here, and I like how the red stripes gives a nod to the  flag… or maybe I should say a salute!

I’ve had some requests for summer tops with sleeves, and this tie-sleeve tee is a good option for that. It’s very lightweight and comfortable, but the sleeves come almost to the elbow with a cute little tie detail for added interest.

The overall fit is a bit oversized, so it’s nice for those who don’t like their tops too form-fitting. I’m wearing my true size small, but I wonder if I’d prefer the fit of the XS. All that to say, go with your gut on this one. If you like a closer fit, you may want to size down.

I picked up these jeans because I’m enjoying kick flares recently, and I wanted to find a more affordable pair to share with you. I like the deep indigo wash with this top — it really makes the perfect flag-inspired look. They also happen to be 40% off right now!

I’m wearing the size 8 because I was shopping in-store, and they didn’t have the 6. They fit okay at first, but this brand does stretch out a little with wear, so I recommend going with your true size if ordering.

They have a really fun slit hem, and the 26″ inseam is the perfect crop length.

Fit Tip: The hem of your crop jeans and pants should hit several inches above the ankle bone, but below the widest part of your calf.

And how fun are these braided slides? In the natural color, they have a nautical vibe that plays nicely with the Americana theme I’ve got going on here. They’re a great price, too. Of course, red nail polish seals the deal.

My top, jeans, and slides are all from Nordstrom Made brands, so you get a lot of bang for your buck. Everything is priced really well for these quality basics.

To complete the look, I added these white seed beed drop earrings and a woven straw tote. I’m really liking straw bags this season. They take any outfit and make it seem lighter and more summery.

This tote is really nice quality, with an interior lining and pockets, and it folds down flat for easy packing. It would make a great beach bag or carryall.

I love the whimsical sayings — there are other options in this brand, if Tan Lines doesn’t resonate.

I also styled a second look that’s a little more casual — an elevated athleisure look for the 4th. This romper is from one of my favorite activewear brands, and another Nordstrom made brand, Zella.

I appreciate the bra-friendly straps and the way it’s cut around the arms and through the chest. The elasticized waist offers some structure, and the tie is a contrasting white and blue stripe.

This shade of blue is really pretty, but it also comes in a few other options. It runs true to size; I’m in my usual size small.

So many jumpsuits are full-length with the banded hem, but this cropped length and the split hem is perfect for summer, and it offers some leg coverage for those who like that. If you prefer shorts, Zella also has this option.

I paired this blue romper with white puffy slides — the sporty style works well with this casual look, and of course my red nail polish keeps it festive.

My straw tote brings a little whimsy to this athleisure vibe, or this Nordstrom Made straw backpack would be really cute as well.

I hope these outfits give you some summer style inspiration, whether you’re looking to refresh your closet or grab a festive 4th of July look.

As always, when you shop at Nordstrom, you get their free shipping and free returns. And don’t forget about their BOPUS (Buy Online Pick Up in Store) and contactless curbside pickup options.

  1. I’m tempted to order the kick flare jeans but I think I’ve hit that magical moment in June when I stop buying spring and summer clothes and start thinking about fall/winter items and the Nordy sale. But I’m headed to Maine for 2 weeks, a good way to take a break from my hobby which is ordering clothes and returning most of them. LOL. But I love the clothes I have and find myself making fewer and fewer mistakes. Thanks for the post, Jo-Lynne. I imagine you’re trying to pack for your Maine trip, too!

    1. Colleen – When I read that you’re taking a break from your hobby of ordering clothes and returning them, I laughed! Same here. I return way more than I keep! Like you, I love what I keep. Have fun in Maine!

  2. The Nordstrom Treasure and Bond lightweight striped sweater is back in stock in medium in tan. Just grabbed it! Thank you for posting on Popular Right Now!

  3. Do you find that Caslon shirts shrink? I bought a few of their scoop neck t-shirts and they all shrunk. I feel like t-shirts shouldn’t be high maintenance

    1. I haven’ t that experience, actually. I guess maybe they take up a little, but I always expect that of cotton. Overall, I’ve had good luck with their pieces.

  4. Great outfit inspo! And I love the Tan Lines tote…so cute!

FUN FACT: The movie Where the Crawdads Sing is currently being filmed right here in my home town (very close to my house) of Houma, LA! It’s fun to watch the actors on set in their costumes with all the props – cool old cars, old stores. They changed the appearance of our little Downtown area to suit their needs but it’s cute!

    1. That is so cool, Casey. I loved that book. And I have a special place in my heart for Louisiana. My daughter worked in public health for years in Louisiana and I was so sad when she left because I don’t get to go as often now.

  5. Cute romper. This may be a dumb question, but how do you put on that romper? It’s all one piece. Do you go through the neckline? Does it stretch out the neckline? Loved the striped red top too. Enjoy reading your posts everyday.

  6. While I like both outfits, I really like the Caslon top and jeans. The top is now in my shopping cart in the red stripped. I may add one of the solid colors, as well. Even though I won’t have it for this weekend, I have a couple of tops in my closet to wear for our fireworks show. I hope that you are having a great day!

  7. Since you made a reference to fall & the anniversary sale …I have a question for you. What do you think the jeans styles will be this fall and how will they work with shoes & boots? You have been styling the crop flares quite a bit and I am wondering what to look for in the sale-especially since fashion silhouttes seems to be changing.

    1. Hey Linda, I cleaning out my email inbox and saw that I never answered this. I am seeing higher shaft booties that work well with crop flares, but yesterday when shopping, I didn’t love the color choices, or silhouettes on many. It’s going to take some trial and error!
