Happy Friday, friends! I’m wrapping up Spring Trends Week with a fresh batch of try-ons. This one turned out to be a bit more resort-focused than I intended, with a few spring transitional pieces sprinkled in. If you have a warm-weather getaway on the calendar, or spring shows up early where you live, I think you’ll find plenty to love here. Either way, it’s a peek at what’s trending this season.

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and typically wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29–30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8.5 shoe. I often fall between sizes, so fit notes matter. Gifted items are marked c/o; everything else was purchased by me.
Resort Wear Edit

Tommy Bahama Palma A Dora Sheath (M) // Paul Green Hadley Sneakers (8) // Celine sunnies
I’ve been ordering and returning so much lately for this upcoming trip to St. Lucia — it’s honestly a little crazy. I’m looking for a few daytime casual dresses, some practical pieces like twill shorts, linen pants, and easy tops. And I’d also love to find a couple of dressier options for dinners.
Resort wear isn’t really my thing, so I didn’t have much to start with, and a lot of what’s out right now feels like a departure from my typical style. So many ruffles, tiered silhouettes, smocked bodices, and bold tropical prints — all very pretty, just not quite me.
All that to say, shopping outside my comfort zone (in the off-season, no less) has definitely been a challenge… but I will persevere!
I know many of you are planning warm-weather getaways too, so I’m going to show you everything — hits, misses, and all — because what doesn’t work for me might work perfectly for you. Let’s get into it!
Tommy Bahama Resort Finds
Tommy Bahama has turned out to be one of my best sources for resort wear that still feels true to my style. Their free shipping and generous 45-day return policy certainly helped, since I’ve done my fair share of buying and returning. Thankfully, I found a few gems.
Palm-A-Dora Shimmer Bay Sheath Dress in Spectrum Blue
at Tommy Bahama (L) // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: The Palm-A-Dora you know and love just earned a little extra shine with subtle metallic threading infused throughout its flattering sheath dress design, making it perfect for your next seaside soiree or night out in paradise.
- 55% linen, 43% TENCEL™ Lyocell, 2% spandex.
- Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low.
- Split-neck linen-blend dress with a hint of stretch.
- Contrast stitching. Bamboo zipper pull.
- Bra snaps help hide and secure bra straps.
- Back length: 35″ from shoulder to hem.
MY THOUGHTS: This is a style I already know and love; I have the black linen version with contrast stitching from last year, which I had planned to bring on this trip, but it isn’t fitting quite as well these days. I ended up ordering this subtle stripe version in the next size up to try. (I ordered both sizes to be sure, but I definitely needed the large.)
I do wish it had a bit more structure through the waist, but it’s stretchy and comfortable, and flattering enough… especially compared to some of my other options.
VERDICT: I’m planning to keep this one. I can see myself wearing it in St. Lucia next month and in Florida later in the season, and even at home this summer.

Two Palms Trapunto Linen Shift Dress in Lilac Chiffon
at Zappos (M) // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: There’s nothing quite as darling as our 100% linen shift dresses, and this pink sleeveless style is no exception. Featuring trapunto stitchwork along the neckline, it’s an effortlessly polished look that’s more than meets the eye.
- 100% linen body, 100% cotton lining.
- Machine wash cold. Hang to dry.
- Lined. Pockets.
- Trapunto stitchwork along the neckline.
- Back length: 35″ from shoulder to hem (size S).
MY THOUGHTS: I thought I liked this one okay… until I looked at the pictures. I love the V-neckline, and the shade of pink is really pretty, but I’m afraid the shape doesn’t do much for me.
If anything, it seems to make my hips look wider and throws off my proportions a bit. It might work better with some type of jacket layered on top.

VERDICT: The jury’s still out on this one.

Chambray Flutter Sleeve Dress
at Tommy Bahama (M) // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Crafted from our linen-blend chambray fabric that’s perfectly lightweight and effortlessly drapey, this V-neck flutter-sleeve dress blends elevated appeal and a casual laid-back vibe.
- 91% TENCEL™ Lyocell, 9% linen.
- Machine wash cold. Hang dry.
- Lined. Pockets.
- Back length: 35″ from shoulder to hem (size S).
MY THOUGHTS: This dress is super soft and comfortable, but I didn’t love the flutter sleeves. I’m not entirely sure what I was thinking when I ordered this one, actually!

VERDICT: It’s going back.

St. Lucia Cover-Up Midi Dress in Topaz Teal
at Nordstrom (M) // more colors and sizes at Tommy Bahama // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Achieve effortless seaside elegance in a lightweight coverup dress with endless versatility. Designed with a loose scoop neckline, flowy fit, and raw hem, this style leans into bohemian details so the look still feels relaxed and laid back.
- 54% linen, 46% Livaeco® viscose.
- Wash before wearing. Machine wash cold on gentle. Line dry.
- This product is unlined and slightly sheer.
- Length: 45″ from shoulder to hem (size S).
MY THOUGHTS: I bought this mainly as a cover-up, though it could easily work as a casual dress. The fabric is fairly sheer, but thankfully not see-through in this blue. I also ordered the white to try.
I don’t feel like it’s super flattering, but I like the design, and I feel like it’s kind of fun and different. It could be nice to have if I want something to wear to the pool and then over to grab lunch in the restaurant.

VERDICT: I think this one’s a keeper (or maybe the white). Planning to bring it to St. Lucia, and I could wear it in Florida in April, too.

Jasmina Gilded Petals Maxi Dress
at Nordstrom & Bloomingdale’s (M) // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: A flattering maxi silhouette sets an effortless tone, while our gorgeous Gilded Petals print adds a dash of shimmer and sparkle to this chic dress that’s ready for any special occasion.
- 95% recycled polyester, 5% spandex.
- Sleeveless maxi dress with a hint of stretch.
- Attached shelf bra with built-in snaps to help secure and hide bra straps.
- Back length: 52″ from shoulder to hem (size S).
MY THOUGHTS: This one didn’t do for me what I hoped it would. The pattern is pretty overwhelming, and the shape is just very tubular. I don’t feel like it does much for me.

VERDICT: I returned this one.

Sandy Gilded Petals Sleeveless Dress
at Nordstrom (M) // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: A trendy sleeveless dress with a halter-inspired neckline and flattering stretch is the perfect canvas for our print of the season: an artistic oversized floral with hints of gold shimmer throughout. Time to dance the night away!
- 95% recycled polyester, 5% spandex.
- Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low. Cool iron. Can dry clean.
- Sleeveless short dress with a hint of stretch.
- Attached shelf bra.
- UPF 30 (Very good sun protection).
- Back length: 36″ from shoulder to hem (size S).
MY THOUGHTS: I had high hopes for this one, and I do like it better than the one above. The pattern is similar but not as large, and it helps that it shows my legs rather than covering me up completely, but it still doesn’t have much shape. It’s a little long on me, too. I think I’ll try the small and see if that helps. I’m afraid it will be too tight, but since it’s so stretchy, it might work.
The back would also require some sort of specialty bra… I was wearing a strapless here, but I feel like something with a J-hook would be more comfortable.

I feel like this one could be quite versatile. I could dress it up for dinner, or wear it for daytime activities in St. Lucia and in Florida later in the spring.
VERDICT: I returned this, but I ordered the small.

Darcy Porto Fronds Sheath Dress
at Tommy Bahama (M) // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Defined by its flattering, modern frond print, this timeless sheath dress brings exceptional comfort to our modern-day style.
- 92% TENCEL™ Modal, 6% nylon, 2% spandex.
- Machine wash, line dry.
- Sleeveless sheath dress with a hint of stretch.
- Bamboo-inspired zipper pull.
- Built-in snaps help secure and hide bra straps.
- Length: 35″ from shoulder to hem (size S).
- Ponte fabric provides a streamlined structure and comfortable stretch.
MY THOUGHTS: This one isn’t bad. It actually creates more shape through the waist than some of the others, and the length is really good.
I would prefer a slightly more open neckline, but I don’t hate this one. It’s very comfortable and stretchy, and the navy-and-white print feels interesting without leaning too floral or tropical.

I see this as a casual daytime dress that I could wear with sneakers or sandals for sightseeing or just hanging out around the resort. And unlike some of the others, I would wear this at home this summer.
VERDICT: I think this one’s a keeper, but I’ll keep tags on until I finalize my vacation capsule, in case I decide I don’t need it.

Two Palms Beleza Blossom Linen Shift Dress
at Tommy Bahama (M) // Sam Edelman Camille (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Defined by its modern floral print set on a solid white foreground in our bestselling Two Palms linen, this 3/4-sleeve dress offers elegant and elevated season-spanning wear.
- 100% linen body, 100% cotton lining.
- Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low.
- Lined. Pockets.
- Self tie belt with bamboo-inspired beads.
- Length: 36″ from shoulder to hem (size S).
MY THOUGHTS: This one is the sleeper hit of the season! I didn’t expect this style to flatter me, but I was drawn to the pretty pattern and color palette. I also love the idea of a breezy linen shirtdress, so I figured it was worth a try.
Lo and behold… I really like how it fits. This straight silhouette with a tie waist can be tricky on me, but somehow it works. And the overall design just feels very elegant and polished.
The 3/4 sleeves are a nice touch, too. I flipped the cuffs, and I think this will look really nice styled with jewelry. I could also see myself wearing it with my flat gold strappy sandals, although the raffia slides work well, too.

VERDICT: Keeping, for sure! I feel like this could work for dinner at the resort, but I could also wear it for daytime sightseeing if we end up going off property. I can absolutely see myself wearing it to church or out to dinner with friends this summer, too.

Boracay 5-Inch Shorts in Evertide
at Tommy Bahama (10) // Addison Sleeveless Sweater (M) // Sam Edelman Bambi Slides (8) // stone necklace

PRODUCT DETAILS: The classic look of these shorts makes it a great go-to, but they’re anything but basic. With a five-inch inseam you have a complementary length and thanks to its cotton-TENCEL Lyocell blend you’ll feel super comfy and experience a touch of stretch.
- 77% cotton 20% TENCEL™ Lyocell, 3% spandex.
- Machine wash cold on gentle, tumble dry low. Do not dry clean.
- Inseam: 5″.
- New fit, runs true to size.
MY THOUGHTS: I’ve been struggling to find shorts, and literally none of the pairs I saved from last year fit, so I really need to find one or two.
In general, shorts just aren’t my favorite wardrobe category. I don’t mind showing my legs, but the way most shorts are designed tends to create the illusion of a giant square across my hips and midsection. It ends up feeling like a giant bullseye right where I’m trying not to draw attention. Maybe I need to lean into monochromatic or low-contrast pairings so that harsh visual breaks don’t exaggerate that boxy shape.

But anyway! Shorts are a necessity, so I ordered a few pairs, and these are probably the least offensive of the bunch. The powder blue feels like a nice departure from the more predictable khaki or white, and it happens to be trending this season.
The inseam is good, and the stretch is great. I just wish the rise were slightly higher, as the waistband creates a bit of a muffin top. I suppose I could try sizing up.
VERDICT: I’m holding onto these in case I don’t find anything I like better. I feel like I need at least one pair of shorts for this trip.

Addison Sleeveless Linen-Blend Sweater in White
at Tommy Bahama (M) // Sam Edelman Bambi Slides (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Knit in a lightweight linen blend with an ultra-flattering drape, this sleeveless sweater is an elevated staple every woman needs in their warm weather wardrobe.
- 62% linen, 38% LENZING™ EcoVero viscose.
- Hand wash cold. Reshape and lay flat to dry.
- Back length: 22.5″ from shoulder to hem (size S).
MY THOUGHTS: Argh, this sweater. I really want to love it. I love the idea of a linen sweater tank, and the neckline and straps on this one are perfect.
But when left untucked, there’s a subtle “band” at the hem that creates a line right across my widest part. It’s also just a smidge longer than I prefer, which makes me feel like I need to tuck it, but that feels a bit awkward.
I also tried it with linen pants and ran into the same issue. Still, it’s nicer than a typical tank top, so I’d love to figure out a way to make it work.

VERDICT: At the moment, this one is still in my closet… with tags on.

Vacation Dresses
Alright, moving on from Tommy Bahama! I had my heart set on finding at least one beautiful dress that felt tropical and special for this trip. I usually gravitate toward sleeker silhouettes, but I decided to try a few flowy printed styles in hopes of finding something that felt a bit more vacation-worthy…
Nadine Cami Midi Dress in Graphite
at Ulla Johnson (10) // Sam Edelman Camille (8) // J.Crew clutch

PRODUCT DETAILS: The Nadine Dress is adorned with graphic vines that evoke feathery textures, patterned atop subtle stripes. This wear-anywhere, black and white dress is made from cotton-blend with a sweetheart neckline that flatters the form and floats to a midi hemline.
- 66% cotton, 34% viscose
- Side pockets
- Concealed side zipper
MY THOUGHTS: I first saw this one on another creator I follow and was immediately drawn to the black-and-white pattern. It felt a bit more sophisticated than many of the other options out there. It’s definitely spendy, but I decided I was willing to splurge if I found something perfect.
Well… suffice it to say, this is not it.

It really is lovely, but this style just doesn’t feel like me, and it doesn’t do much to flatter me either. The smocked band at the waist combined with all the volume through the hips adds so much fullness, while the bodice and delicate spaghetti straps feel very small in comparison.
I’m very short-waisted, and I’m learning that I need more substantial straps and a bit more coverage on top to balance out the proportions — especially with longer dresses.
VERDICT: This one is on its way back!

J.Crew Smocked Maxi Dress in Black
at J.Crew (M) // Sam Edelman Camille (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This sweet style comes with panels of smocked and popcorn textures up top, plus removable straps so you can wear it two ways. It’s crafted from 100 percent cotton voile that’s ultralightweight and subtly sheer.
- 100% organic cotton.
- Sheer fabrication.
- Unlined.
- Removable straps.
- Machine wash.
MY THOUGHTS: I probably should have stopped the second I saw the words “this sweet style” in the product description, ha! But I thought maybe in solid black, a silhouette like this might work. The longer bodice does help balance my proportions, but it’s still a lot of fabric.
I also tried it over a swimsuit, thinking it could work as a dressy cover-up, but I don’t think I’d actually wear this to the pool. I do think I prefer it with the spaghetti straps attached, though.

VERDICT: I don’t hate it, but “don’t hate it” really isn’t the standard I’m going for, so I’m leaning toward returning, but I haven’t 100% ruled it out.
I’m waiting until I have all my options, and then I’ll get Paul’s opinion on the pieces that are a bit outside my usual. He’s typically a good gauge when I’m on the fence. Plus we’ll be together the entire trip, so if he thinks I look ridiculous, it’s a definite no.

Dress Forum Strapless Maxi Dress

PRODUCT DETAILS: This Dress Forum Strapless Maxi Dress is a must for every warm weather vacay. From it’s print to its fit, this piece is a dream for every semi casual event.
- Shell: 90% Rayon 10% Nylon
- Lining: 100% Polyester
- Hand wash cold with like colors. Hang to dry.
MY THOUGHTS: I ordered two dresses from Social Threads, after seeing a friend wearing them on her tropical vacay. I knew they were a bit of a long shot, but they felt worth trying. The first one I couldn’t even get zipped up, but once I got this one on, I was pleasantly surprised.
For starters, I really like the pattern. It’s muted enough that it doesn’t feel too far outside my comfort zone. And while I rarely consider anything strapless, the way this one is designed is really nice, with horizontal pleating and a softly curved bodice.
Also, this one doesn’t seem to create as much volume through the midsection as some of the others I tried.

I paired it with a dressier shoe and took photos from several angles, and I have to say… I actually kind of like it. If I end up choosing one long, flowy dress from this round of try-ons, I think this might be the one.
I also appreciate the price point, especially since this isn’t something I see myself wearing at home.
VERDICT: Still undecided, but this one’s in the running… pending the Paul test 😂

More Resort Finds: Tops, Shorts & Pants
Here are a few additional tops, shorts, and pants from my recent try-ons.
J.Crew Factory Crewneck Beach Sweater
at J.Crew Factory (M) // Tommy Bahama shorts (10) // Sam Edelman Bambi Slides (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: The best-selling beach sweater With a loose knit and a lightweight feel, this one’s perfect for morning strolls by the water and nights in front of a bonfire.
- 70% cotton/30% polyester.
- Machine wash.
MY THOUGHTS: I think I shared this sweater last week, but since I’m trying it on with a few of these pants and shorts options, I thought I’d give a quick recap.
I really like the lightweight knit, and I can see wearing it tied around my shoulders or paired with shorts or pants on a mild evening. It just feels like a great piece to have in my spring/summer closet, whether for vacation or at home. The price point is fairly accessible, too.
I do struggle a bit with styling it, though. It’s another one (like the Addison sweater tank) that feels awkward both tucked and untucked — due to the split hem and ribbed band at the bottom.

VERDICT: I think I’m keeping this — if for nothing other than to throw over my shoulders when I need an extra layer, but I’ll probably end up wearing it, too. I usually try not to settle for “good enough,” but sometimes good enough wins.

Quince Organic Stretch Cotton Chino Shorts in Shell Pink
at Quince (10) // at J.Crew Factory (M) // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Designed for endless versatility, these shorts are an easy favorite for sunny days and getaways. A smocked waist with adjustable ties ensures the perfect fit and oversized front pockets keep the look relaxed for casual, coastal style.
- Inseam: 4″
- Made from 97% organic cotton, 3% spandex
- Two front and back pockets
MY THOUGHTS: I can’t remember exactly why these didn’t work for me, but I think the rise was too low and tight. Honestly, they may have just been too tight all over.
They also have a slight flare at the hem — a detail I truly dislike in shorts. Like the Tommy Bahama pair, sizing up may be the answer. But to be perfectly transparent, I’m having a hard time practicing what I preach and ignoring the number on the tag.
I played around with that beach sweater here, doing a side tuck and pushing up the sleeves… I don’t hate it like this.

At any rate, they are nice shorts and come in a bunch of great colors. They just seem to run small… or at least that’s what I’m telling myself anyway 😉
VERDICT: These went back, but I may order the 12 to try.

Vineyard Vines Frankie Pull-On Shorts in Stone
c/o Vineyard Vines (M) // Tommy Bahama Addison (M) // Sam Edelman Bambi Slides (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Designed for endless versatility, these shorts are an easy favorite for sunny days and getaways. A smocked waist with adjustable ties ensures the perfect fit and oversized front pockets keep the look relaxed for casual, coastal style.
- 100% lyocell
- Easy pull-on style
- Smocking at waist
- Adjustable ties
- Oversized pockets in front
- 3.5″ inseam
- Machine wash
MY THOUGHTS: Pull-on shorts aren’t typically my favorite — the gathered waist can add volume through the midsection — but these from Vineyard Vines aren’t bad.
The color is my main hesitation. They’re called Stone, so I was hoping for a cooler beige, but this one leans a bit yellow. They’re very comfortable, though, and could be a nice casual option for my upcoming trips. I’m considering exchanging them for the navy.

VERDICT: Considering a swap for the navy.
Also worth noting: Vineyard Vines offers free shipping on orders over $125 and free returns.

J.Crew Tropez Short in Black
at J.Crew (M) // J.Crew Factory sweater (M) // beek Sunbeam Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Designed for endless versatility, these shorts are an easy favorite for sunny days and getaways. A smocked waist with adjustable ties ensures the perfect fit and oversized front pockets keep the look relaxed for casual, coastal style.
- Front rise: 12 1/2″
- 3″ inseam.
- 100% linen.
MY THOUGHTS: These felt really big and baggy on me, although I do like the idea of black linen shorts, and I doubt this sweater helped matters. I feel like they need a more form-fitting to.
I’ve ordered the small to see if they fit better. They’ll probably end up being too tight, but I figured it was worth a shot.

VERDICT: I’ll report back when I try the small.

J.Crew Soleil Pant in Flax
at J.Crew (M) // Nation Los Angeles Hailey Tank (M) c/o (15% off with code JOLYNNE15) // Sam Edelman Bambi Slides (8) // stone necklace

PRODUCT DETAILS: We updated our favorite pair for the beach and beyond with a thinner waistband and a slightly shorter, more streamlined leg. We kept the same adjustable drawstring for the perfect fit every time and crafted it in lightweight 100 percent linen, so it’s guaranteed to keep you looking and feeling cool.
- 100% linen.
- Elastic waist.
- Pockets.
- Machine wash.
MY THOUGHTS: I feel like linen pants are something I should have. I usually default to white jeans in the summer when I want to wear pants, but they don’t feel very tropical-resort to me, and trousers are so on trend right now. I can usually find a more tailored, lined pair of linen pants that I like on me, but this time I was looking for something more casual, and these seemed worth a try.
In theory, I do like them. The rear pockets are a good size and don’t call undue attention, and the elasticized tie waistband isn’t too snug or create excess volume, which can often happen with this style. The leg has a sleek straight fit, almost slightly tapered. That said, I do wish they were just a touch longer.

I also tried them with that J.Crew Factory beachy sweater, and I don’t know — I just see a lot of fabric through the midsection, particularly from the waistband to the crotch area.

Compare that to how the same sweater and sandals look with my favorite high-rise wide-leg ankle jeans. Still plenty of volume on the bottom, but the structure of the denim through the waist and hips feels much more flattering to my eye.

VERDICT: I’m not quite sure. What are your thoughts on these pants?

Joelle Stretch Linen Trouser in Barely Beige
on sale at EVEREVE (29) // Tommy Bahama Addison (M) // Sam Edelman Bambi Slides (8) // stone necklace

PRODUCT DETAILS: Add effortless style to your work-to-weekend wardrobe with the Joelle trouser by EVEREVE. These wide leg pants are crafted in comfortable stretch linen fabric with a high-rise waist, full-length inseam, and patch pockets.
- Waist Rise: High
- Length: Full
- Front Rise: 11 1/2″
- Inseam Length: 31″
- Leg Opening: 24″
- 51% Linen, 48% Lyocell, 1% Spandex Woven
- Machine Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low
MY THOUGHTS: Okay! So these are more my speed, with a flat front that zips and buttons, but they’re still an unlined relaxed style, and they have a nice high rise, so no muffin top.
They’re a nice color, and they’re comfortable with a good bit of stretch. The rear view is a big concerning though… I’m not sure what is going on with those gigantic pockets.

Here’s how they look with a slimmer top tucked in. I feel like my proportions are all off balance here, so I’ll have to play around with tops to go with these, but I’m tempted to keep them. At this point, they feel like my best bet for linen pants.

VERDICT: I’m tempted to wash and dry these and then have them hemmed.
Also worth noting: These are on sale (yay!), and they run big. I’m wearing the 29 comfortably, which doesn’t happen very often these days.

Nation Los Angeles Hailey Tank in Jet Black – 15% off with code JOLYNNE15
c/o Nation Los Angeles (M) // Joelle Linen Trouser (29)

PRODUCT DETAILS: The Hailey Tank is the kind of piece that works with anything, cut in a soft, slightly stretchy jersey for a clean, flattering silhouette.
- Length: 23″
- Contents: 95% Pima Cotton, 5% Spandex
- Construction: Knit
- Fabric Weight: Heavyweight
- Sheerness: Not sheer
- Stretch: High stretch
- Care: Machine washable. Lay flat to dry.
- Made in: Peru
MY THOUGHTS: This is a really nice-quality “basic” tank that doesn’t feel basic at all thanks to the flattering cut and beautiful fabric. The length is perfect, easy to wear tucked or untucked, and it feels great on.

EVEREVE Marni Barrel Pants (8)
It is definitely form-fitting, but that’s sometimes exactly what you want in a tank.
VERDICT: Keeping this, for sure.
Also worth noting: Nation Los Angeles gave me a code. You can use JOLYNNE15 for 15% off.
And that’s all I have time for today. I do have more transitional spring finds I want to share, so stay tuned for my next round of try-ons!

Love the print 3/4 sleeve dress on you, so many options to wear; I looked at this one too as I favor 3/4 sleeve dresses now. The beige trousers also a winner, I think too just wash them they may relax even more and have hemmed a little; love the drape and fit on you. Those last coral like barrel pants look nice too.
Great post! Wishing for warmer weather!
Love the tb floral shirt dress. I bought a solid black version 2 years ago and it travels well, classy but polished. Love the pink shorts on you. You look great in them with white sweater. Love the Marni pants at end and Joelle pant. I’m going to try. One thing I learned about myself years ago is that long dresses just are not flattering at all. Knee length gives a better proportion overall, and you have nice legs that you can show off.
Yep, I have learned that lesson 100 times over and I still get drawn in to trying longer styles. My legs are my best asset at this point, so I really shouldn’t be covering them up.
REALLY enjoyed the varied looks…I have a tropical vacation coming up, too, and this was great to see on a similar body type (hello, short-waisted friend). It’s a nice departure from your everyday style, too!
I feel your struggle with finding new clothes. The best thing i did is analyze my Kibbe body style and my body proportions-which are a soft apple. This is all new to me since middle age tummy spread. But it has helped me to find new silhouettes that look better with my growing middle. It seems like you are ordering the same styles but in larger sizes and i wonder if you would be happier with different styles like shirts with collars, with a layered tank. And that linen dress looks so good on you because the belt is high on the waist. Not your usual style, but it looks super on you.
I feel like I’m very in tune to my body type (and its idiosyncrasies, lol!) but I know I’m fighting against it with many of the styles I’m trying. It doesn’t help that much of what is out there right now really is not the best for me.
The linen dress allows me to place the tie where it naturally should go, and it also doesn’t have any elastic that tends to create weird bulges, so yeah. That is definitely a style to keep in mind going forward. And I just like having a little more coverage at this point in my life, so I’m willing to deal with the annoyance of collar, lol.
I also tend to forget about wearing a collared shirt open over a fitted tank, but it’s a nice way to get a layered effect without being too warm. I actually was planning to wear that new blue stripe shirt that way.
Love this post! I’ve been needing a resort wear guide for a while!
Just my two cents, I thought you looked great in the dress from Social Threads and the J Crew smocked maxi with the straps attached (not the strapless look). Just a thought and I know you’re not really a Target shopper, but they have a lot of really cute vacation style dresses, skirts and shorts right now (at least in California they are out). I just bought a pair of blue and white stripe shorts and a white midi skirt for my beach vacation next month.
Good to know, I may stop in and see if they’re in stock here yet. I hate to pay a lot for some of these styles that I may not wear again.
We’re going on southern Caribbean trip in a few weeks and I’m struggling with clothing options-not a big resort wear fan and have never found any linen pants that look nice(often too flowy).
Quince has linen pants that aren’t flowy. I wore them trekking all over Egypt in 100 F heat and found them well-fitting and comfortable. I was able to wear them in Italy in the summer, as well.
Good to know! I just ordered these to try.
Hi! I’d love to see the M in the shimmer blue Tommy Bahama dress. The L is dipping its toe toward frumpy.
There’s another Joelle pant out (this years version, full price) and it’s in 3 colors. I think you should try it. Flat front, zipper and button, elastic back. There’s a stunning blue color. I’d stay to your true size or order a couple sizes in it.
I figured you’d try the vineyard vines herringbone shorts? I just got new ones in white and navy. They definitely looked great on you last year and maybe a size change they will this year😊
I think the Quince shorts are nice on you but I’m always leery about the sit test in quince items.
I’m thinking on things for you and if I find something worth sharing I’ll send your way!
Excited for your trip! One of our kids loves to scuba dive St Lucia!
Trust me, the M did not fit. 🤪 My hips and rear end have become my biggest issue as of late, no pun intended, and the M looks dreadful from behind. It also pulls across the front… I’ll see if I took any pix and add one.
I saw the Joelle with the tie waist but I didn’t see a new pair with a zipper and button. The tie waist pair is on its way, but I really prefer no tie b/c it forces a tuck… but they might work.
Always love seeing your picks. Send them on!
I did order the VV Herringbone shorts in a 10, they are on their way.
Oh! The tie waist one I got also button and zips😊
Perhaps that’s what you got too? I’d need to look to see if it can come off. It’s a pretty narrow tie so maybe it’s easily hideable. It’ll be fun to see what you think!
I wonder if you could have Nordstrom do some darts in the blue TB? Just to create a flight hourglass?
It’s fun to see what you try and end up with!
I was thinking darts or just slimming a little bit in the waist of the TBs would help too. They can be quite boxy. I like the linen pants with the black tank. The fitted top looks best with fuller bottoms.
Not sure when your St. Lucia trip is, but if you have time to wait Kut from the Kloth will probably release their Meg linen pants soon. They are FABULOUS! Traditional zip fly and pockets like on jeans. I think they are a linen/rayon blend. They drape beautifully. I’m definitely adding another pair this year. Last year bought them in olive and wore them tons. Lucky Brand also had some linen pants that worked for me last year. They are also cut like a pair of jeans, but 100% linen. Again, not sure when they will be released but both of these might be worth the wait if you don’t want to spend on “good enough” for just one trip. Just my 2 cents. 🙂
Hi, I 100% agree on the shorts issue. I always struggle, but I did find a cute pair from Kut and Kloth last year! Also, I like the printed maxi dress on you better than the black one. I was browsing Ann Taylor, which I tend to forget about sometimes, and they have a red eyelet halter dress that might be perfect for the resort and Florida. Also, a cute denim shift dress. Just wanted to bring those up to you!
Keep that navy & white short, print sheath dress! It’s keeper & looks great on you. I also like the sleeper 3/4 sleeve linen dress too. Very versatile. I’ve found that J.Jill & Talbots have good summery dresses that don’t look too precious. But they may not have all their cute styles for spring & summer out just yet in time for our trip. Keep them in mind later on.
Thank you for the resort wear post, Jo-Lynne! I hope you’ll end up keeping the Dress Forum green and white maxi dress. It is darling on you, and sexy, too! I bet it will get Paul’s approval! 🙂 Have you tried Athleta’s linen pants? I bought the white and oatmeal colored ones for our trip to France last May and they were perfect! So comfortable and lightweight. I wear the same sizes you do, but did have to go with the XS in the pants (which NEVER happens!) because the linen stretches out when you wear it. They were my first linen pants, so I didn’t know this fact. Have a wonderful time on your vacation!
I have been looking for outfits for warm weather as well. They seem to be just hitting the stores. I love the Tommy Bahama white linen dress on you. I may have to try it. Ties at waists don’t seem
to work with my body type.
Have you tried Aritizia lodge pant in linen? Have been seeing the crepe all over social media. Wondering how the linen look. The crepe were really long and heavy. Thanks for sharing!
I have the black crepe pair on my rolling rack, waiting for me to try, but I haven’t ordered the linen. I have a store local to me, I may stop in.
I really like the Social Threads strapless dress on you. I think it’s very flattering. Regarding shorts…You may want to try a few pairs that don’t have front slant/angled pockets. I find those to be much more flattering. Shorts are a tough one but as women, we must give ourselves some grace. I wish there was universal sizing so we weren’t always aware of the number on the tag.
Love the green and white strapless dress on you! It’s very flattering. Also the button and zip linen pants look very nice.
Hi Jo-Lynne,
Thank you for the detailed post. I really learn a lot from your analysis of why an item works or not. Love the TB linen shirt dress and the navy & white fronds dress on you. You should keep the Factory white sweater, it will be useful. I also like the Marni barrel pants with the black tank. Speaking of the black tank, can you wear a regular bra with it?
Yes you can!
The white long sleeve beach sweater looks great on you with everything you paired with it. I think you will wear it all spring and summer.
Agree with you on the two huge print dresses. Im surprised you liked them to order them. They are made of recycled polyester. That’s a big turnoff for me. The loose pants look better with a fitted top. My favorite is the shirt dress and the blue one.
The Beleza Blossom Linen Shift dress is my favorite of the try-on session. Appreciate your try-on posts because many of the styles you tried today have never worked for me and it makes me feel better that I’m not the only one that has a challenge to get the right fit.
Good morning! Just on quince this morning and noticed they have some nice linen and tencel. 🙂

Jolynne, I feel like you are really missing out on so many fun festive styles!! Do you follow Cassie (HiSugarplum) She has many posts regarding resortwear. Some are really BRIBHT (lol) but also some really gorgeous pieces!! Take a look
You’re being wayyyy too hard on yourself. . especially with the shorts. trust me, you look fantastic.
Thanks for this! It’s fun! I’m not good at resort wear so this is helpful. I love the floral beleza dress on you! It seems very versatile! Both linens pants look good on you, especially with black. I see what you’re saying about the JCrew linen pants but maybe with the right top they would work?
Great post. Have you tried any of the linen pants from Frank and Eileen? I would like to hear your thoughts on fit. F&E is definitely an investment but the quality is superb
Hi Jo-Lynne – thanks for the post! I think the linen pants are the perfect length for you…that is where they are supposed to fall. Line dry pants and you should be okay.
Were heading to Maui in a few weeks and I’m trying to find vacay/resort styles too. We went last year as well and some things still fit but I realized it is much more causal there than I expected.
Here are some thoughts. I bought the 7in Tommy Bahama Boracay shorts last year and they were great – until I washed them and the fabric faded out and got weird and stripey where they were bunched up in the wash. I followed the instructions so I’m not sure what went wrong. But we’ve had the same thing happen with some of my husbands dress pants. I’m curious if anyone has had that happen.
For shorts, have you checked out White House Black Market. You’ve featured some of their shorts in the past.
For linen pants, I’ve decided I can’t deal with the drawstring waist accentuating my waist. I found two different style linen blend pants at Banana Republic Factory that have been perfect. Good luck shopping!
Athleta’s linen pants and shorts are really nice if you want others to try! Think they just started a sale on them too.
Q&A
I see you have on the Paul Greene Hadley sneakers in a photo from a previous season. I bought those sneakers a few months ago, but haven’t really worn them. Do you think this classic sneaker look is a bit dated right now, since low profile looks are trending? Or do you think they are a classic and always look good. Thinking maybe I should return the Hadley style. (They are an investment.) Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.
