MY THOUGHTS: Jumping right in with a fun little transitional sweater in a trendy open-weave knit. I love the color of this one and the little wood-look buttons at the neckline, and it’s currently on sale!

Fit note: I’m in the small, and it’s plenty roomy, so it definitely has a relaxed fit.

VERDICT: I’m holding onto this one; it’s perfect for our mild spring weather here in Philly.

MY THOUGHTS: These wide-leg jeans from Risen are such a great summery style. I love the wash, the distressing at the hips, and the released hem detail. They’re soft and comfortable, and I feel like the fit is really flattering for a wide-leg silhouette. They also feel like a really good value for the price point.

VERDICT: Keeping!

MY THOUGHTS: I love this cozy hoodie, and the shade of blue is so pretty. It pairs perfectly with white jeans or shorts for summer, and the stitching detail on the hood is such a fun, trendy touch.

I can totally see myself wearing this with white shorts and flip flops for a cool evening at the beach or out on the patio with friends this summer.

MY THOUGHTS: I absolutely love this set! It’s so cute and easy for a sporty weekend look.

It’s soft and comfortable, and the shorts don’t bind at the waist like so many elastic-waist styles do on me these days. The pieces can be worn together or mixed and matched with other closet staples.

VERDICT: Keeping. After a marathon try-on session on Wednesday afternoon, this was the last thing I tried on, and I ended up wearing it for the rest of the day and evening.

Denim Finds for Summer

I’ve been on the hunt for a new pair of denim shorts for this season, so I ordered several pairs to try. I also have a few new pairs of jeans that recently came in that I wanted to share with you.

KUT from the Kloth Jane Short

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve had versions of this style of denim shorts over the years, and this year they’ve gotten a bit longer with a 4 1/2″ inseam. The leg opening is also slightly more flared, but I don’t think it’s a deal breaker. I like the wash, and they’re really comfortable.

VERDICT: Keeping.

Pistola Saige High Waist Denim Shorts

MY THOUGHTS: These shorts definitely have a flared silhouette, along with an extremely high 12 1/2″ rise. It’s definitely “a look,” but not one that flatters me personally. I think they could work really well on someone taller or with a longer torso, but they just felt like too much volume and rise on me.

VERDICT: I returned these.

Tommy Bahama Relaxed Jean 4-Inch Shorts

MY THOUGHTS: I wasn’t sure about these at first, but I think I like them. The light wash feels really summery, they’re soft and stretchy, and the seaming detail is kind of fun. It makes them feel a little more elevated than your typical denim shorts.

VERDICT: I think I’m keeping these.

Good American Good Ease Relaxed Jeans in Indigo575

MY THOUGHTS: I really like these jeans. They’re super soft and comfortable, with a nice medium wash and well-placed whiskering and fading for a super casual, relaxed summer vibe. I just wish I’d realized they had a 34″ inseam — yikes! I will definitely have to hem them if I keep them.

VERDICT: I have so many pairs of jeans right now, I really need to go through them all and make some decisions. But these are definitely in the running. I’d probably hem them for flats.

Good American Dolly Joleans Straight Jeans in Indigo1194

MY THOUGHTS: These are also really soft and comfortable, and I like the silhouette a lot. They’re nicely faded and whiskered for that relaxed, lived-in look that I especially like this time of year.

The only drawback for me is the unusual seaming across the back. I’m not quite sure how I feel about that. Otherwise, these are practically the perfect slim straight ankle jeans for summer.

VERDICT: Still deciding on these, but they’re definitely contenders. I’m just not sure I would reach for them over my Madewell Jules. They fill a very similar spot in my closet, and I think I like the look of the Jules just a wee bit better.

Splendid Lounge Denim Short in Bleached Indigo

MY THOUGHTS: These are really cute. I love that bleached wash for summer, and the tie waist is a fun touch. They’re super soft and comfortable, but that 2 3/4″ inseam is a little intense. Whatever happened to longer inseams trending? 😂

I’m going to hold onto these for now because they could be fun for the beach this summer or hanging out by the pool, but they’re probably a bit short for me to feel comfortable wearing many other places.

VERDICT: Keeping for casual beach and pool days.

Linen Bottoms for Summer

I tried several pairs of linen pants and shorts lately because I’d really like to add a few more lightweight, non-denim options to my summer wardrobe, so I ordered a variety to compare.

SANCTUARY The Linen Marine Wide Leg Pant in Timber

MY THOUGHTS: I love the color of these, and the fabric is really lightweight and comfortable, but the silhouette is so wide that I just don’t feel like they do much for me.

I do appreciate the flat front with the button-and-zip closure, and the front patch pockets don’t bother me, but there’s just so much fabric. You can especially see it when I stand straight-on without posing. I could probably try them with some different tops, but I think I liked some of the other pairs I tried a little better.

VERDICT: I don’t think I’ll keep these, but I could see them working well for someone taller or someone who prefers a much flowier silhouette.

J.Crew Soleil Pant in Linen (Flax)

PRODUCT DETAILS: We updated our favorite pair for the beach and beyond with a thinner waistband and a slightly shorter, more streamlined leg. We kept the same adjustable drawstring for the perfect fit every time and crafted it in lightweight 100 percent linen, so it’s guaranteed to keep you looking and feeling cool.

• Care: Machine wash.

MY THOUGHTS: Speaking of volume in the hips and thighs… this drawstring style definitely does nothing for me. Maybe it’s just the way they’re supposed to fit, but it’s not a silhouette I can quite get used to on myself.

VERDICT: These didn’t quite win me over, but they’re a solid option for someone who appreciates this style.

KUT from the Kloth Meg in Chocolate

MY THOUGHTS: This pair feels a little better to me. You can see when I stand straight-on that there’s a little less fabric and a bit more separation between the legs, which feels more flattering to my eye. They’re also extremely lightweight and easy-breezy.

I also noticed they’re only 50% linen and have a hint of spandex, which feels really nice. I appreciate that little bit of stretch, and hopefully they won’t wrinkle quite as badly as the 100% linen options.

VERDICT: Keeping, and I love this chocolate color.

Madewell Zoe Linen Shorts

MY THOUGHTS: These shorts finally came in — I tried the size 8 last week, but the 10 fits much better. I really like the light blue linen and the clean front with no pleats.

They are on the shorter side, but I actually like the length. They do have a very high rise, so I need to wear them with tops that don’t require tucking, but otherwise I really like them.

VERDICT: Keeping!

J.Crew Tropez Short in Linen (Black)

MY THOUGHTS: I like this pair quite a lot, too. They don’t have the tailored front with a button and zip, but the smocked waist lays nice and flat, and I like that you can adjust where they sit on the body.

The rise measurements weren’t provided, but they don’t feel quite as high-rise as the Madewell pair, and the black color is so versatile. Also, these are currently 30% off!

VERDICT: These fit a bit snug, I’m not even sure why I ordered the small. Wishful thinking, I guess! I just ordered the medium to compare while they’re on sale.

A Few Summer Sandals I’m Loving

I also tried a few sandals lately, and there are some really good ones in here — from elevated everyday slides to platform wedge styles.

Splendid Daria Raffia Wedge in Natural

MY THOUGHTS: These raffia wedges with the interlocking straps are really fun for summer. The straps feel soft against the foot, and there’s padding in the footbed, so they’re quite comfortable as well.

VERDICT: I’ll probably be keeping these — they’ll be nice to have with some of my longer pants and jeans this season.

Leather Muse Sandals in Cognac

They come in several colors and materials, but I especially love this cognac leather. These are the kind of sandals that work with practically everything all summer long.

VERDICT: Definitely keeping.

Dolce Vita Jilian Wedge

MY THOUGHTS: These are definitely fun, but they’re a lot. The chunky platform gives them a very bold look, and while I think they’re cute, I don’t feel especially stable walking in them. I’d honestly be afraid of twisting an ankle.

VERDICT: I’m not sure I’ll be keeping these, but they’re really cute if you like a tall platform wedge.

Loeffler Randall Taryn Brown Jelly Flip Flop

MY THOUGHTS: I absolutely love these. The combination of the black rubber footbed, brown jelly straps, and sparkly rhinestone details is so fun. They somehow manage to feel both casual and dressy at the same time, so they could really go either way depending on how you style them. And they’re comfortable, too.

VERDICT: Definitely keeping these. I read that the rhinestones can occasionally pop out, but they include a little bag of replacement stones, so I tucked them away somewhere safe in case I ever need them.

Splendid Asher Studded Sandal in Caramel

PRODUCT DETAILS: Cool without trying too hard, this is the sandal you’ll wear on repeat. The studded straps dress things up just enough, with a casual silhouette that keeps you comfy all day long.

MY THOUGHTS: These are really cute, and I love the studded detail and barely-there silhouette. The caramel color is a great classic cognac shade that goes with just about everything.

VERDICT: I really don’t need another pair of cognac sandals in my life, but I’m going to have a hard time returning these.

Vince Piper Slide Sandal in Warm Almond

MY THOUGHTS: I love these — they feel so luxe and elegant. The leather upper, lining, and sole give them a really elevated feel, and I love the bit of hardware between the double straps. They also have a slightly squared-off toe, which keeps them feeling modern. The leather is soft and comfortable against the foot, too.

VERDICT: I’m probably keeping these since I don’t have anything else like them in this color, and I really love them.

Easy Summer Tops

I tried a mix of lightweight sweaters, everyday tanks and tees, and a few easy tops for summer layering and casual outfits. A bunch are from EVEREVE — forever my go-to for beyond-basic tops — plus a couple from J.Crew Factory and Sanctuary.

Splendid Ava Gauze Button Tank in Eucalyptus

MY THOUGHTS: This is a cute, breezy tank, and I love the fabric. The texture is pretty, and it’s so soft, as most Splendid pieces are. I’m not a huge fan of the exaggerated shirttail hem in the back, though, and this one feels just a smidge too small. I think I need the medium.

VERDICT: Since I prefer a straighter hemline, I don’t think I’ll bother ordering the next size up. It could probably be altered, but I have enough tops that I don’t need to deal with that.

Free People Jamie Henley Tank in Pitch Black

MY THOUGHTS: Another winner from EVEREVE! I love this striped sweater tank — the navy and washed red combination is so striking, and the design is really cute with the wide straps and cropped length. It’s cropped, but not too cropped, so I can still wear it comfortably with mid-rise jeans. These are the PAIGE Mason jeans with a 10″ front rise, and they pair beautifully together.

VERDICT: Keeping for sure!

Sanctuary Metallic Sweater Tee in Collagen

MY THOUGHTS: I think this top is really fun. I love the openwork design and the subtle metallic thread throughout. The 3/4-length sleeves are nice for this time of year, and it’s a nice, easy length.

VERDICT: I don’t think this beige shade is the most flattering color on me, though, so I’m not sure I’d reach for it very often. But it’s cute!

J.Crew Factory Beach Sweater in White and Navy Beach Stripe

MY THOUGHTS: I liked the solid white version of this sweater so much that I ordered the striped one too, and I love it just as much. It’s so good with denim shorts!

VERDICT: Keeping. Perfect for mild summer evenings here at home or down the shore.

Quince Pieces Worth a Look

I ordered a mix of things from Quince recently, including some lightweight layers, accessories, and easy summer staples.

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Short Sleeve Cardigan in Faded Denim

MY THOUGHTS: This is a beautiful sweater. I love the design and the quality of the knit. The V-neck is really flattering, it’s a great length, and the slightly longer short sleeves feel modern while also offering a little more upper arm coverage for those who prefer it.

Sadly, this blue sold out, but there are several other colors still available.

VERDICT: I already have quite a few similar sweaters, but I’m very tempted to keep this one because I love this shade of blue so much.

Quince Cotton Viscose Voile Ruffle Trim Tank in white

VERDICT: Keeping! In fact, I also got it in the black. (See below.)

Quince Sicily Sunglasses

Classic Spring Staples from Lands’ End & Talbots

Lands’ End and Talbots both sent me some items to try this month, and I found a few great options I wanted to recommend. Also, everything is currently 50% off at Lands’ End, and Talbots is offering 30% off regular-price tops, jeans, pants, and shorts, which makes these pieces an even better value.

Lands’ End Supima Cotton Polo in Deep Sea Navy

MY THOUGHTS: This top is a great classic style in a really nice quality Supima cotton knit. The fabric is substantial without feeling heavy or clingy, and it has some shape through the waist. It’s on the longer side, so I front-tucked it for better proportions.

VERDICT: This one isn’t really my style; it feels a little safe for me, so I don’t see it earning a spot in my closet, but it’s a really nice piece.

Drifter Tie Notch Neck Sweater in Artichoke

MY THOUGHTS: This sweater is another really nice piece. It has that open-weave knit look, but with a pretty pointelle pattern, and it’s soft and lightweight. I also love that it’s 100% cotton.

The slightly shorter length feels current, and this shade of green is so pretty. (It also comes in ivory.) It pairs especially well with white jeans for spring.

VERDICT: Holding onto this one.

Talbots Open Stitch Crewneck Sweater in Sunrise Pink

MY THOUGHTS: Open-stitch knits are definitely having a moment this season, and this one is such a pretty classic option. I love the contrast trim at the neckline and the clean, classic silhouette with the set-in sleeves. It’s also a really good length for wearing untucked, and this shade of pink is so pretty for spring and summer.

Fit note: I could probably have sized up, but the small fits in a very classic, true-to-size way.

VERDICT: I’m going to hold onto this one; it looks so pretty with white jeans.

Talbots Lucia Charms Metallic Strappy Sandals

MY THOUGHTS: These sandals are so pretty. I love the mix of gold and white stone charms, and the T-strap style feels both classic and versatile. They pair especially well with white jeans and simple summer outfits.

VERDICT: They’re a little big on me, so I’m going to see about exchanging them for the 8.
