The Perfect Waterproof Shell for Spring Outdoor Activities

It’s been a lot of fun discussing spring trends this month, but many of us live in areas where spring weather can be quite fickle. Fortunately, Backcountry has a great selection of outdoor gear for the unpredictable weather that accompanies this time of year, and they’re having a huge Season Send-Off Sale right now.

Stoic Shell Jacket (S) // Stoic 1/4 Zip Baselayer Top (S) // Outdoor Research Ferrosi Pant (8 Short) // On Cloudaway Shoe (9) // Coal HeadwearFrena Solid Beanie // Smartwool Liner Glove

Around here, it’s not unusual to get a surprise snowstorm in March or even April. In fact, I’m pretty sure whoever dubbed the idiom March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb hailed from Pennsylvania.

My son played baseball all through elementary and middle school, and we would freeze sitting outside watching his games. I surely could have used this Stoic Shell Jacket back then!

I put together a late winter/early spring hiking look for this post, but this jacket perfect for all kinds of spring activities… Yes, cheering from the sidelines at your grandchild’s soccer game counts too!

Not only is it waterproof to repel rain and snow, but this jacket has a relaxed fit that accommodates several layers. It also has underarm vents that zip open to release heat when you work up a sweat, an interior pocket for stashing cash or a car key, and adjustable cuffs.

This jacket comes in four color options, and it is currently 50% off! It runs true to size; I’m wearing the small.

Underneath, I’m wearing this moisture-wicking Stoic 1/4 Zip Baselayer Top. It’s a medium weight, so you can wear it alone on milder days, but it also makes a nice layering piece. It runs true to size with a close fit, or you could size up for a little more wiggle room, and it’s also marked 50% off right now.

I usually just wear a pair of running tights when Paul and I go hiking, but I thought it might be a good idea to have proper pants, so I ordered these Outdoor Research Ferrosi Pants while they’re on sale.

These pants have tons of features for all kinds of rugged outdoor activities like the cinch closure at the cuffs, cargo pockets for stashing valuables or a snack, quick-drying material for water activities, and even a harness-compatible waist. They’re also quite comfortable.

They come in regular (31″ inseam), short (29″ inseam), and long lengths (33″ inseam). I ordered the size 8/Short, but I probably should have gone with the 8/Reg. I do think they’re intended to come down a little further over my shoes.

Speaking of shoes, the On Cloudaway Shoes complete this early spring hiking look. Like all On Cloud shoes, they’re extremely lightweight and comfortable, and I love that you can just slip them on and go without futzing with laces.

I’ve got quite a collection of beanies for my outdoor walks, but this one by Coal Headwear is the one I’ve been reaching for the most lately. It comes in tons of colors, and it has a relaxed fit that goes on easily over my ponytail.

This hat is not included in the sale, but you can use promo code JOLYNNESHANE15 for 15% off if it’s your first order at Backcountry.com. This promo code is good for pretty much anything on the website that isn’t part of their Season Send-Off Sale.

  1. The jacket is such a gorgeous color! And I like the fit of the hiking pants. We go to Maine every summer for a couple of weeks and I hike every morning with my grandchildren. No matter how hot it is, I wear hiking pants because of undergrowth and bugs and those would be perfect. I’m going to check out the sale.

  2. I love the blue jacket, such a fresh color for spring, have to consider that one. Wish I could wear the cap but they seem not very flattering on me, look cute on you though.

  3. Hi Jo-Lynne, are you going to do a post on dresses soon? I need some graduation dress ideas. College graduation is coming soon…May 27…yikes!
