Trend to Try: Denim Mini Skirt

Denim skirts are having a moment this spring, and while the midi and maxi lengths are often touted as the current look, denim mini skirts are also trending.

I was planning to sit this trend out, as I thought my mini skirt wearing days are well behind me, but I guess I was wrong! When I saw this KUT from the Kloth Bristol Utility Skirt at the Evereve store last month, I couldn’t resist trying it on. I’m so glad I did because as it turns out, I really like it! And it isn’t as short as I had anticipated.

In fact, I don’t even really consider this a mini skirt, but it is a current-looking length. In fact, so many dresses and skirts that are out right now are labeled “mini” when they’re really just an above-the-knee length on us mere mortals. (I’m 5’5″, for reference.) For example, this dress and this one from Gap Factory are both labeled mini dresses, but they are perfectly appropriate for those of us in the over-50 crowd.

All that to say, don’t get too caught up in the “mini” part and allow that to dissuade you from trying something you might end up loving. You’re better off comparing length measurements. This KUT from the Kloth Bristol Utility Skirt is 17″ long, for reference. I also appreciate how it’s cut slightly longer in the back than in the front, for a little extra coverage.

The fabric is suuuuper soft and lightweight, which makes it comfortable for the summer heat, and I love the raw hem and subtle distressing. The utility pockets are another nice modern touch.

FIT TIP: This skirt is true to size for most brands. I usually wear a 6 in KUT from the Kloth jeans, but an 8 in other brands, and I’m wearing the 8 in this skirt.

I paired this denim skirt with a sleeveless sweater for a modern and polished look. A casual tank or t-shirt would certainly work, and there may be a time when I go with that pairing, but for this post, I decided to top off this denim mini skirt with a summer sweater instead. This is something I could wear to meet a girlfriend for lunch or to a casual family gathering.

The Jane Pullover is from Evereve’s own label, and it has some really nice details, like the ribbed collar and rolled edges. It’s made of a soft 100% cotton knit, and the red stripes provide a fun pop of color. It runs true to size, or size down if in between. I have the small.

In keeping with the elevated look, I wore raffia slide sandals and carried a raffia clutch. I don’t always match my shoes and bag, especially with raffia, but in this case I thought they worked well together.

I like how these sandals walk that fine line between dressy and casual… See what I did there? The raffia fabric is light and summery, and bead-trimmed buckle detail keeps them classy. Plus, they have a 1″ block heel, and there’s a good amount of padding under the strap and in the footbed, so they’re quite comfortable to walk in. They’re also 30% off right now!

Finally, I added shiny gold doorknocker earrings and a wavy bangle to keep the look polished and put-together.

Of course, there are so many other ways to wear this versatile denim mini skirt! I wasn’t really planning this post topic when I photographed it, or I might have brought along a few other options. Here’s how I tried it on in the dressing room — with a simple grey tank and metallic leather flip flops, and also with a graphic tee.

Both of these tops create a more laidback vibe, which work well for more casual occasions. I also think white sneakers would look great with both of these outfits.

I’ve rounded up some more denim mini skirts for your shopping inspiration below, and remember to compare length measurements. Don’t judge these skirts by how they look on the models. Some are shorter than the 17″ I’m wearing here, but most are right around that length.

  1. Adorable skirt. I’m tempted to order it. I just wonder how often I’d wear it. I love this style of pocket on me– it’s very flattering. I may order it and see if I’d be comfortable wearing this instead of my old stand-by denim shorts.

  2. I love the option of a denim skirt instead of shorts. Actually, this skirt is longer than most of your shorts! The term ‘mini’ can be so misleading! I have ONE literal mini skirt that I bought from Loft a few years ago that I only wear as a cover-up over my bathing suit at the beach or pool!! I like the idea of wearing the skirt with a light summer sweater. So lovely! Enjoy this gorgeous weather.

  3. My question is about the frayed bottoms on jeans and this denim skirt… how long do you think this will last? I personally do not care for it. Looks so unfinished and sloppy. I know my opinion is my opinion and others probably like it. I do enjoy your tips.

    1. I agree
I will not buy anything with an unfinished edge. Just don’t like the way it looks, and I feel this trend will go the way of distressed jeans…quickly

    2. I can’t predict how long a trend will last, but you certainly shouldn’t feel obligated to wear it if you don’t like it. 🙂 There are lots of finished styles out there too.

  4. I like the whole outfit and accessories. So cute on you. I like the sweater better than the tops. With skirts I don’t like the front tuck. I normally tuck all the way or wear a shorter top like the sweater you’re wearing. You’re right it’s not a mini skirt.

  5. I love a short denim skirt in the summer as an alternative to shorts & wear mine often (along with athletic skorts). I recently got the lighter wash Gap Factory utility skirt you showed & love it—it’s very comfortable & feels a bit more up-to-date than my previous plainer ones. I’m 5’3”, so it’s above the knee on me but not “mini”. Love the outfits!

  6. Cute skirt! Would you describe this as more of a straight fit or slightly A-line? It’s a little difficult to tell from the pictures.

  7. Well this is fun!! I had 2 mini skirts that wore constantly when I worked at Express right after we got married. I loved them! I might just have to try one of these! Of course, as short as I am, they likely won’t look “mini” on me! 😂

  8. Cute outfit! I used to wear graphic tees with a denim midi a good bit. Might have to give it a try again! Btw I love your “punny” jokes!

  9. I enjoyed the post. I just “can’t do” long denim skirts, especially in summer in Houston!!! So I am loving “Mini” shirts & skorts this year. I agree with you – mini skirts are much shorter than an inch or 2 above the knee. The length you are showing is very flattering to almost anyone. Additionally, a skirt/skort denim or otherwise is so much more versatile and flattering than shorts. More please! Happy summer y’all!

  10. I love the shorter skirts, I wear them all summer in place of shorts when I go out.
Denim, as well as cotton prints.
I am short so they are not mini on me

  11. I’ve had a GAP mini skirt I’ve had for years and it’s the perfect just above the knee look and really would be in style now. I haven’t worn it lately but may drag it out. I like this one you are styling with the updated raw hem and pockets. Looks good on you.
