Try-On Haul + 4th of July Sales

Happy Saturday, friends, and happy Independence Day to my friends here in the USA!

This weekend probably looks different to many of us, but hopefully we can all do something festive today. We’re having some friends and family over for a cookout and pool party later on, and I’m looking forward to that.

Today I’ve got a small try-on haul for you, plus I rounded up a bunch of things I’ve worn that are on sale this weekend.

Try-On Haul: CALIA by Carrie Underwood, Amazon Fashion, Everlane, Anthro & Dr. Scholl’s

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and 135 pounds-ish, with a slight hourglass shape. Unless I say otherwise, I’m wearing a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe.

Everlane The Pima Micro Rib Funnel-Neck Tank

Pardon the 3-day hair and no makeup, and thank goodness for the skin smoothing tool in Lightroom! #keepingitreal

I don’t have good up-close pix of this top because I was really trying to figure out an outfit to wear for my birthday dinner out with friends last night.

It ended up being too hot for pants, so I had to bag it, but I thought the all-black look was fun for a change. I sometimes forget about an all-black outfit in the summer, but I thought this top lended itself well to the idea.

I always take a rear view shot when trying out something new, but for some reason, my rear view shots are always a bit blurry. I think it’s b/c I’m using the front-facing camera, and the quality just isn’t as good.

I can get the general idea, though, and I like how the top emphasizes my waist, and the crop flares help offset my wide hips.

Here’s the best shot I have of the top… it’s the same material as the pima micro rib cap sleeve tee I have and love.

I think the mockneck/sleeveless combo is super chic. It’s cut nicely around the armholes, not too deep or set in too far. It has a body con fit, so I sized up to the medium.

If I’d worn this to dinner, I would have worn a statement earring, maybe these in the silver.

And isn’t my Victoria Emerson Manarola boho cuff perfect with this?

I also love and adore these sandals!!! They’re comfortable too. Hopefully I’ll get to wear this outfit at some point.

VERDICT: Keeping

CALIA by Carrie Underwood Women’s Crossed Back Tank Top

Okay, we’re taking it down a few notches with this one.

Someone tipped me off to this workout wear line by Carrie Underwood, and I ordered a few things. I love this tank.

For one thing, the color is gorgeous, but it’s also soft and stretchy with a nice fit that’s not too relaxed or too body-con.

And the back is super cute, with the criss cross straps. I just don’t like how long the top is; it looks sloppy to me. But it might be worth having hemmed.

I actually wore this exact outfit a few nights ago to hang out by the lake with friends at a nearby state park. I was cool and comfortable, and I felt like I still looked pulled together and stylish… not that anyone cared.

It was a very casual get-together with friends who have seen me at my worst on plenty of occasions, and I could have easily worn my usual jean shorts and a tank, but I thought it might be fun to wear a skort for a change.

VERDICT: Keeping!

also wearing: Cole Haan Anica sandals (TTS; 40% off) and Athleta Soho Skort (not on sale, BUT Athleta is doing a Spend More, Save More sale, and you can take $25 off a $150+ order, or $50 off a $250+ order! See more of my Athleta favorites.)

CALIA by Carrie Underwood Women’s Anywhere Woven Skirt

I ordered this woven skirt, thinking it was a skort, but it turned out to be a skirt. I still like it a lot, though.

The best thing about it is the length. Most skorts are much shorter. I also like how it has pockets, and it’s a little longer in the back.

The woven material is very lightweight and feels like it would dry easily if it got wet.

The only reason I didn’t wear it to the lake was because I wanted the comfort of the shorts, and I couldn’t find my Jockey slipshorts. I guess I need to order a new pair.

This skirt also comes in black, and it runs true to size; I have the small. And good news! Dick’s offers free shipping and free returns on CALIA products.

Here’s a few more shots, this time with the Everlane The Air Cami.

I was trying to see if I would like this skirt better if I tucked in my top all the way around. I just think it looks weird to do the front tuck with the elastic waist skirt.

I’ve never cared much for the full tuck on me because I have a very high waist and low hips, if that makes any sense.

Usually tucking in a top gives me the dreaded “long butt” — LOL! But this combination seems to work somehow.

I think it helps that I can set the skirt where I want it — not right up high on my actual waist, but not too low, the way most are meant to fit.

I think I like it! This would certainly open up a lot more skirt options for me in the future. I usually steer clear because I don’t like most tops with them.

VERDICT: Keeping!

also wearing: Everlane The Air Cami and Cole Haan Anica sandals

Daily Ritual Women’s Cozy Knit Dolman-Sleeve Boat-Neck Dress

I’m really impressed with this casual t-shirt dress. It’s actually a bit heavier than a typical t-shirt dress, and very soft with a brushed surface and just enough stretch.

It also has some nice shaping through the waist, so it isn’t as boxy as some. Here’s a back view.

The boat neck and dolman sleeves elevate it above a classic t-shirt design, and the shirttail hem is another nice touch.

I love this heather grey for summertime, but it also comes in black marl and a solid black as well. It runs true to size; I have the small.

VERDICT: Keeping!

Paige Rayvn Dress

I thought this dress looked cute on the Shopbop website, but I was underwhelmed when it came in the mail.

I struggle with these tie waist dresses because the tie is usually placed a couple inches below my natural waist, where I’m not as small, so it makes my “waist” look bigger than it is. But if I remove the tie from the loops and place it where my actual waist is, it looks silly because it’s sitting right under my chest.

I also don’t like how far in it’s cut around the arms. This seems to be a trend these days with these ruffle sleeves, and I am not a fan. You have to be very thin and have no flab in that area to make this style look good.

I do like the slit on the side, and the material is very good quality (it’s the Paige brand, as in the jeans) but overall, it’s just not for me.

VERDICT: returning

Dr. Scholl’s Original Collection Sandals

I was instantly drawn to these throwback sandals when I saw them online. I really wanted them to wear with my Paige Cindy chewed hem straight ankle jeans, but they’re cute with dresses and shorts too.

They’re more comfortable than you’d think, and they do adjust if you want to make them bigger or smaller.

They fit true to size, and they only come in whole sizes. You can also find them at Nordstrom, but they’re on sale right now at DSW. (Use code VAYDAYS20 at checkout for 20% off!)

VERDICT: Returning. I like the styling a lot, but I wore them around the house on the carpet for a bit, and they seemed to aggravate the tendon behind my right ankle bone that often gives me fits with certain shoes. #finickyfeet

Mariela Cut-Out Tee By T.La

Anthropologie ran a sale on graphic tees a while back, and I ordered a few. For some reason, this was included, even though I don’t really consider it a graphic tee.

This tee actually comes in a ton of solid colors and prints, so if camo isn’t your thing, there are a lot of other options to choose from.

Anyway, the material is substantial yet soft, and it’s definitely on the boxy side. I really like the cut-out detail on the neck, although it’s hard to see in these pictures.

It also has a double raw edge on the hem and sleeves, which is a nice touch.

Here’s a back view — there’s nothing exceptional about the back, but I think it’s nice to see things from all angles.

The length of this top is 24.5″, and it runs true to size. I have the small.

VERDICT: Keeping.

Also wearing: J.Crew denim shorts in white and Dr. Scholl’s sandals

Carmen Saguer Sunshine Graphic Tee

I like this one a lot better online than I did in person. It has a weird fit.

It doesn’t sit quite right on the shoulders, and it’s boxy and short, but with a shirttail hem, so the sides are really too short for my comfort level.

Here’s a back view — you can see how the neckline is sitting up high. It’s odd.

The graphic is more visible in person than in these pictures. I was using a ring light because it was a dark, cloudy day, but it’s making everything look overly bright.

Anyway, it’s cute in theory, but it’s not really made for me.

VERDICT: Returning.

also wearing: Gap 3″ shorts and Marc Fisher Fianna sandals

Sunset Graphic Tee

I think the design on this one is so fun, but the slub fabric feels a little rough against the skin, and it’s quite see-through.

I was wearing a black bra, and you can definitely see it through the shirt, as well as the tag, lol.

It also just barely fits. I would probably want to size up to a medium, if I were to keep it.

It’s cute, but I don’t know that I really need it. Plus, I would need to order the next size up, and it’s no longer on sale. So….

VERDICT: Returning.

also wearing: Kut from the Kloth Catheriene boyfriend shorts and Caslon Oskar flat slide sandals

Madewell Whisper Cotton V-Neck Pocket Tank in Fieldgate Stripe

This tank was reduced to $5 and pretty much sold out, but there are a couple left, so I’ll share it anyway.

I think the color palette is so fun for summer, and I don’t have anything like this in my closet. I’ve actually worn it a few times already.

It has the same fit as my solid black Madewell whisper cotton v-neck pocket tank, that I shared in last week’s Try-On Haul. It’s TTS; I have the small.

VERDICT: Keeping!

also wearing: Gap 3″ shorts and Marc Fisher Fianna sandals

Things I’ve Worn On Sale

In the interest of time, I’m not going to review each one because I’ve shared them all several times before. But if you have questions, drop them in the comments, and I’ll do my best to get back to you in a timely manner. Links, sizing notes, and sale prices are beneath each picture.

And again, for size reference: I’m 5’5″ and 135 pounds, and I typically wear a 6 or 28 in pants and jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe. If I say TTS, that means the item is true to size, and I’m wearing my typical size.

  1. I can honestly say that there is not one of these outfits that I wouldn’t love to wear! I especially love the first all black combination, such a simple but chic look. Great content JoLynne!

  2. Good morning!! Love all the looks, I actually have that cross cross top, I am donating it. Just doesn’t feel or look right on me… I got the navy top I thought it was huge the size medium until I put it on, love it , waiting for more things to arrive.
    Happy 4th of July!!!

    Blessings

    Cindy

  3. Happy 4th of July!  You shared some great sales and finds with us.  I was pleased earlier today when I took my coral Loft tie front sweater out of the dryer and saw that it does not need an iron before wearing it.  Of course, it’s got to cool way down and the humidity go away before I will be wearing it.  Boy, you’ve just been a socializing butterfly this week.  I’m curious if y’all have to wear masks when you have people over to your house.  Have fun!

    1. Oooh, good to know about the sweater. I haven’t washed mine yet.

We don’t wear masks when we’re entertaining because we’re mostly outside, and we’re eating and drinking much of the time. We also hang with the same few families, so we’re keeping our circle small.

  4. Hi Jo-Lynne
Happy Birthday and Happy Fourth of July! Thinking of the Victoria Emerson bracelets as fun gift for young teenage granddaughters. Wondered which patterns your younger daughter would choose?
    Thank you.

    1. hi. Love today’s post. Your eyeglass frames in the indoor Tryon haul shots are beautiful and look so good on you.

  5. Happy 4 th of July to you. Great post. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸  Be safe with your gathering. We are staying home away from people this year. Too scary with virus. Has hit home this week with 3 people we know. 🙁 Spikes everywhere.

    1. Yep, it’s definitely on the move. We’ve been shut down for so long here, and we are hanging with the same small group, so I feel pretty safe at the moment. I know it’s going to get worse before it gets better tho.😕

  6. That Paige striped dress could’ve been so cute if it didn’t have those shoulder ruffles on it. I’m not a fan of the cut-in ruffled shoulder either. I used to wear the tie waist style but since hitting menopause I have a muffin middle and the tie waist accentuates it.  I ordered the loft tie front sweater but in the navy floral print. Can’t wait to get it! Happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸 We have absolutely no plans…..Feels kinda strange & different for sure. All city fireworks shows have been cancelled, beaches are closed, no parades this year. We’re just going to barbecue burgers and watch some movies in the backyard today. I did pick up a bottle of my favorite rose champagne but that’s as festive as it’ll get! 😁🇺🇸

    1. Rose Champagne and a quiet backyard BBQ sounds nice. There were fireworks going off all over our neighborhood last night. I guess b/c all the big shows were canceled, they were all doing them at home. At least it gave us something to watch.

  7. I got the WHBM lace up tank and utility shorts for 40% off! Glad I waited and glad you shared them. Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

  8. Hi,
Can you tell me what size you are wearing in the JCrew white shorts?
How do JCrew bottoms usually run? have never bought any bottoms from them.

    Thank you,
    Janeen

  9. I lived in Dr Scholl sandals in the 70’s! They were my summer shoes…Frye boot in winter & fall.
I tried to wear them a few years back, when they were “re-introduced” After an hour out running errands, my calf muscles were killing me. Ended up borrowing a pair of slippers from my girlfriend to wear during my visit with her, and on the way home.

  10. Love all of you outfits. All are so pretty. I wore the Dr.Scholls sandals years ago. Who knew they would come back!! Haha!! So glad you got to be with your friends. We haven’t done that yet! Hopefully soon! Have a great day!!

  11. Hi Jo-Lynne,
First of all, I look forward to reading your posts every day.  You’ve inspired me with your outfit choices and sale notices!  I live in northern Delaware and I love the picture of the state park that you posted a while back. Are you able to share which park that was?  Thanks so much!
