Versatile Black Sweater Dress

Hello, and welcome back to 25 Days of Winter Fashion, my seasonal style collab with Cyndi at Grace + Beauty! It’s hard to believe we’re wrapping up this series on Friday. It’s a race to the finish, I’ll tell you. We photographed this outfit yesterday morning, and I have one more to shoot if I’m going to finish strong.

Versatile Black Sweater Dress for $40

For today’s outfit, I have a really cute shaker stitch sweater dress that is only $40. The reviews are mixed, so I almost didn’t order it, but I’m glad I did. It does run big, so I’m wearing a small. I like that it’s not a body-con style, like so many sweater dresses are, but it’s not too baggy either.

The knit is on the thinner side, so I would definitely recommend wearing it with tights, and it’s also a bit lower cut in the front than what I typically wear, so you may want to wear a tank top underneath, depending on how well-endowed you are. All that said, this dress is perfect for throwing on with tights and boots for lunch with friends, for church on Sunday, or anytime you want to be a little more dressed up than jeans. I love the shaker knit detail and the little side slits at the hem.

I paired this dress with black tights and OTK boots, and I topped it off with my red wool pea coat. I thought the red made a lovely contrast against the all-black outfit, and it’s perfect for Christmastime.

For this post, I wanted to create a dressier look, something I’d wear out to dinner or to a holiday party, so I carried my leopard clutch (I also love this leopard pouch) and added a statement ring, but you could easily dress it down with ankle boots and a blanket scarf and more casual jewelry.

My ring and necklace are both from my Stella & Dot boutique, and right now, they’re running a Flash Sale — 50% off a HUGE selection of popular items. The sale ends tonight, 12/14, at 9pm PT, so don’t wait around if you see something you love. It’s a great opportunity for holiday shopping too!

  1. I love this dress on you and the way you styled it! The tights and otk boots are perfect, and I adore the pop of red with the coat. I actually tried this one a couple weeks ago as part of my search for a casual holiday party dress, but it was not a good sight on me, lol. It was a bit longer on me though. Bummer because the price is excellent.

  2. Jo-Lynne, I love this pop of red with the all black! I hope you can get rid of the cold real quick. I’ve been dealing with mine since last Thursday, without any good medicine, and Larry got it, but they gave him a strong antibiotic on Monday.

Regarding teens: we have a 17 yr old granddaughter that isn’t good at telling you things she wants, so if I don’t ideas from her mom, I wind it. Carley likes Charming Charlie, and there is one close to her home, so I ordered her a couple of things from there; for her June b’day I ordered her a pretty crochet top from Grace and Lace; at one point she was planning to attend Georgia Tech, so I got her a sweatshirt from there; we’ve given her items that are pink & came since she likes both. Even though we are close, her schedule is jamm packed, so when we lived 10 minutes apart we still didn’t see much of her, so I’ve had to wing it a good bit. Now that we sold our big house in metro Atlanta, we are in a position where we can go big this year. Unbeknownst to Carley and her parents, for Christmas we are giving her a nice check to use for college next year. So, on the 23rd if y’all hear a big scream up there, it’ll probably be from Carley. We want to witness her putting the money to good use now when it’s needed, instead of after we’re dead and gone, when she may not need it.

    1. I think that’s fabulous. My husband’s grandmother used to give big monetary gifts for that same reason – she said she wanted to see us enjoy it, not wait till after she was gone. It was very much appreciated!

  3. Just wanted to share I went into Old Navy and they have a clearance round of jeans. I got black original skinnies for about $15.00. Cool! Now to style them. Maybe with the Loft merino wool sweater I got for 50% off on Black Friday. Thanks Jo-Lynne.

  4. Love the red pea jacket. It’s perfect with an all black outfit.
I hope you’re not getting a cold. Have fun in the Poconos!

  5. I checked the pea coat linked up but the reviews aren’t great, plus it doesn’t have the detail of your coat. What brand is yours?

  6. Gorgeous dress!

My 18 year old son got his license a few months back. We have a system down here where the kids have to drive with a licensed adult for the first 6 months. After that (and a practical test) they’re on their own for 18 months but not allowed non-adult passengers and there’s a 10pm curfew. After THAT (and another practical test!) they really are on their own. Even with the curfew and no passenger rule I still worry. There’s been one accident as the result of surface flooding already and I’m hoping that has given him enough of a fright to last for life.

I’m learning that as parents we will never stop worrying about our babies, no matter how old they are ❤️
