What I Wore in England: A 10-Day Capsule Wardrobe for London & the Cotswolds

Now that I’m back from England, I thought I’d share everything I wore on the trip! This was a 10-day adventure split between London and the Cotswolds, and I challenged myself to pack in a carry-on only to make it easier to navigate the trains, planes, and automobiles that were involved.

I spent a lot of time refining my travel capsule in the weeks (okay, months) leading up to the trip—trying on combinations, considering the weather, and making sure everything worked together. In the end, I felt really good about the pieces I brought and how it worked out. I wore everything I brought at least once, and I didn’t feel like I was missing anything.

England Travel Capsule

Below are all the outfits I wore, along with a few notes on what worked well, what I wore the most, and anything I might change for next time.

Carry-On Travel Outfits for England

Everything you see here came from my carefully curated 10-day capsule wardrobe—packed in a carry-on and designed to mix and match for both city days in London and countryside exploring in the Cotswolds.

Day One: Travel Outfit

I chose this outfit with comfort in mind for the overnight flight, but I also knew we’d be hitting the ground running once we dropped our bags at the hotel, so I wanted something that would work for sightseeing too. I had planned to wear my Athleta Brooklyn Heights Cargo Pants, but at the last minute, I realized they might not be warm enough, so I opted for this SPANX AirEssentials set with the wide-leg pants and half-zip pullover.

I layered a black and white striped tank underneath, so I could take off the pullover if I got warm. It also looks nice draped over the shoulders, which gave me some styling flexibility once we got into the city.

This outfit also served another purpose—I wanted something comfy yet pulled-together for evenings at our rental home in the Cotswolds, and this set was perfect for that. Plus, the striped tank was part of my capsule and worked later in the week with the black cardigan and any of my jeans.

When I arrived at Heathrow, I met up with my friend Shelly, the organizer and guide for this Walkabout trip. We both flew in a day early to get acclimated, and since our flights landed around the same time, we shared a cab to the hotel. After dropping our bags, we set out in search of coffee and breakfast, and ended up spending most of the day sightseeing and shopping around London before check-in. (I’ll share more about the tour itself in a separate post, for anyone interested!)

I could have stashed a change of clothes in my backpack, but I didn’t want to bother, so I just wore my travel outfit until we were able to check into our rooms later that afternoon. It’s not exactly what I would’ve picked to wear shopping on Regent Street, but it got the job done.

For the flight, I had tucked my black Gucci crossbody into my backpack to keep things streamlined, and once we landed, I pulled it out to carry the essentials I needed for the day. It ended up being the bag I used most during the trip—lightweight, secure, and easy to wear across the body for long days of walking. (It’s an older style that has been discontinued, but I found one on a pre-loved site, in case you want to check it out.)

Dinner at Indigo

After taking some time to relax at our hotel and unpack, Shelly and I met in the lobby and headed out for dinner at Indigo. It’s a fairly posh spot in the theater district, but the evening felt too damp and chilly for the dress I’d planned to wear, so I opted for an all-black outfit instead—my black cashmere cardigan (buttoned up like a pullover) and washed black jeans.

I would have worn my black ballet flats, but since I knew we’d be doing a fair amount of walking, I opted for my VEJA sneakers with the black accents. Either way, it felt good to change out of the shoes I’d been wearing for the past 24 hours!

I also threw on my black raincoat, even though rain wasn’t in the forecast. It just seemed to work best with the outfit. And I carried my new brown Mulberry Amberley Satchel, which ended up being my second handbag option for the trip.

I packed a Longchamp crossbody for that purpose, but since I had just bought the Mulberry, I never ended up using the Longchamp—and I’ll probably return it. I was never all that excited about it anyway; it’s a bit larger than I wanted. The Mulberry bag turned out to be the perfect size for most days, and it tucked comfortably under my arm. Plus, the rich brown leather and gold-tone hardware added a polished touch to any of my outfits.

Day Two: Churchill’s War Rooms & Exploring Belgravia

One of the other women in our group and I had tickets to the Churchill War Rooms the next morning, and we planned to grab lunch afterward and then meet up with the rest of the group for an optional walking tour of Belgravia before the trip officially kicked off with dinner that evening.

I wasn’t quite sure how to dress for the day because it was chilly and overcast when we left our hotel, but the forecast called for sunshine and warmer temps later in the day. I’d been cold in my travel outfit without a coat the day before, so I decided to play it safe and wear the other cashmere sweater I packed. I paired it with my slim straight-leg blue jeans, and I went back to my plain white leather sneakers since there was no black in the outfit.

Then I added my cropped trench and carried the brown Mulberry bag again. It all felt classic and easy for a day in the city. Of course, I had to stop for the obligatory red phone booth photo!

similar trench // Jenni Kayne Flynn sweater (S) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood Fray (29) // Paul Green Hadley (8) // Mulberry Amberley // Jenny Bird Florence earrings // Anna Beck pendant necklace

By mid-afternoon, the sun came out and it ended up feeling warmer than expected. I took off my coat and carried it for most of the Belgravia tour, but overall, the outfit held up pretty well for a long day on foot. In hindsight, the short-sleeve cashmere sweater might’ve been a better choice—but if I had worn that, I probably wouldn’t have reached for this brown one at all, since I never wore it again on the trip. The weather ended up being nicer than expected the whole time we were there!

Dinner at Daphne’s

Our Walkabout trip officially kicked off that evening with dinner at Daphne’s, a charming Italian restaurant within walking distance of our hotel.

I changed back into my black jeans and wore this pretty floral top. Since it was a short walk, I decided to take the opportunity to wear my ballet flats—I wasn’t sure how many chances I’d get! Thankfully, they’re very comfortable with soft leather and a cushioned footbed, and they worked out just fine for the half-mile walk to and from the restaurant. It also felt good to give my feet a chance to breathe a little.

Day Three: Walking Tour of Royal London & Afternoon Tea

The first full day of our Walkabout trip included a walking tour of Royal London, followed by afternoon tea at Brown’s, so I knew I was in for another long day on my feet. Here’s our group at Buckingham Palace.

It was brisk that morning, but the forecast looked promising, so I wore one of my short-sleeve tops layered with my cropped trench—and that combo worked out well. I was a little chilly in the shade during the first hour or two, but by afternoon I had shed the jacket and was glad I’d gone with short sleeves.

I had originally planned to bring just two pairs of jeans—the MOTHER Dazzlers in black and blue—but at the last minute, I threw in this cropped pair for a little variety. They work well with this shorter top, so it felt like a good day to work them into the mix. I went with my plain white leather sneakers instead of the VEJAs, since there was no black in the outfit.

The Great Gatsby at London Coliseum

A small group of us had tickets to see The Great Gatsby at the London Coliseum that evening, so I changed into my black jeans, which felt just a bit dressier. We were all tired of walking and navigating the Tube, so we decided to call a cab. I took the opportunity to give my sneakers a break and wear the ballet flats again.

I topped it all off with the black Lululemon raincoat because it seemed more cohesive with the outfit, and the darker tone felt dressier than the trench, and I went back to my black bag too. We saw every manner of dress at the show, from sequins to blue jeans, and I felt like this outfit struck the perfect middle ground.

Day Four: Visit to Windsor

Sunday was the day we visited Windsor, and since we were attending a worship service at St. George’s Cathedral that morning, I figured it was a good opportunity, and maybe my last, to wear the dress I brought. I paired it with my VEJA sneakers with black accents and carried my black crossbody bag to keep everything cohesive.

It was another chilly morning, but the forecast called for warmer weather by mid-afternoon, so I wore my cardigan over the dress for extra warmth early in the day. It also looked cute draped over my shoulders once the sun came out.

Dinner at The Ivy Chelsea Garden

We got back to London just in time to freshen up and change for drinks in the garden behind our hotel before we set out for dinner.

I was ready to get out of the dress and into some comfy jeans, and it was starting to cool off again, so I was glad for the extra warmth. I kept it simple with a white tee and blue jeans, and I wore the black cardigan again. I draped over my shoulders at first, and then I layered it over my t-shirt (unbuttoned) once the temperature dropped later in the evening.

My feet were tired of the VEJAs, so I ended up changing back into the Paul Greens after drinks and before walking over to The Ivy, even though I liked how the black accents on the VEJAs tied in with the sweater and bag. Such a minor detail, I know… but I think about these things!

Part 2: The Cotswolds

Day Five: Train to Stroud

The next morning, we packed up and took cabs to Paddington Station, where we caught a train out to the Cotswolds. We explored the village of Stroud for an hour or so and grabbed lunch before another set of cabs picked us up and took us to Woodchester Valley Vineyard—our home for the next few days.

I wore my black jeans with the black cardigan (MVP of the trip!) layered over the black and white tank from my travel outfit. I figured I could always take off the sweater or drape it over my shoulders if I got too warm. And I carried the brown crossbody since the black one packs more easily. Even though I’d normally choose a black bag with an all-black outfit, this felt like the more practical choice for travel day.

The same is true for the sneaker choice. I prefer the VEJAs with this look, but they don’t have as much support as the Paul Green Hadley, and they aren’t quite as bulky to pack, so I went with the Paul Greens for this leg of the trip.

Our evenings in the Cotswolds were all spent at the vineyard house, where Shelly had arranged for a private chef to prepare dinner for us each night. After several late nights in London, it was such a treat to relax and be served right at “home.”

That first night, I changed into my white tee and kept on the jeans and cardigan—though I’m not quite sure why I didn’t just pull on my comfy SPANX wide leg pants.

Day Six: Village Hopping in the Cotswolds

We spent our first full day in the Cotswolds exploring some of the area’s most charming villages: Bourton-on-the-Water, Lower and Upper Slaughter, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Blockley. It was another beautiful day—a bit nippy in the morning, but sunny and mild by afternoon.

I was starting to get a little tired of all the neutrals, so I pulled out this bright red top and paired it with my wide-leg ankle jeans, which I hadn’t worn in a few days. I finished off the look with my cropped trench, white sneakers, and brown crossbody bag.

similar trench // EVEREVE Nora Muscle Tee (S) // Paige Anessa (29) // Paul Green Hadley (8) // Mulberry Amberley // similar earrings

By afternoon, it was warm enough to remove my jacket and wear the top on its own, which I think is so cute.

When we got back to the house, I changed into comfy clothes. I’d brought a pair of leather flip flops to wear around the house, and they were perfect for lounging. They even have a bit of arch support, which was exactly what my feet needed after all the walking.

Day Seven: Castles, Churches & Cotswold Charm

Our second day in the Cotswolds started with a visit to Sudeley Castle, followed by lunch in Burford, and a quick stop in picturesque Bibury on the way back to the vineyard. At that point, the Quince black-and-ivory striped cashmere tee was the only item in my capsule I hadn’t worn yet, so I built my outfit around it.

I paired it with my black jeans, added my VEJA sneakers with the black accents, and topped it off with my cropped trench. This was one of the outfits I’d envisioned wearing in England for months leading up to the trip, so I’m a little surprised it took me this long to pull it out—but it ended up being one of my favorites.

Day Eight: Rest Day & Vineyard Tour

Our third day in the Cotswolds was a bit more relaxed. We stayed close to home base and spent time enjoying the vineyard property, including a private tour of the vineyard and winemaking facilities that afternoon. After two packed days, it was a welcome break before heading back to London.

My SPANX travel set was in the wash, so I wore the red muscle tee again, this time paired with my straight-leg blue jeans and flip flops for a laid-back morning around the house. I changed before the vineyard tour, but this was perfect for a slow start to the day.

EVEREVE Nora (S) // MOTHER Dazzler (29) // beek flip flops (8) // LAGOS earrings // LAGOS bracelets one & two

It was getting chilly by the time we headed out for the vineyard and winery tour, and I didn’t feel like wearing a coat, so I switched into the striped tank and layered the black cashmere sweater over it instead. It was just the right amount of warmth and still felt relaxed and put-together.

Part 3: Back to London & Heading Home

Before I knew it, it was time to head back to London for one final night. It was my last chance to explore the city and squeeze in a few more sights on my own schedule before flying home.

Day Nine: Train to London

The next morning, I was up bright and early to pack for the short trip back to London. We took cabs to Stroud Station and caught a train to Paddington, where we all went our separate ways. I re-wore the green cowl neck top with my black jeans and VEJA sneakers, and I topped it off with my trusty cropped trench.

I finally pulled out the Longchamp tote I’d packed flat in my suitcase and used it for a few of the smaller purchases I’d picked up along the way. That freed up just enough space to fit everything else—including a bottle of wine!—into my carry-on without expanding it.

similar trench // Michael Stars Nara (M) // MOTHER Dazzler (30) // VEJA Esplar (39) // LAGOS earrings // Longchamp tote // AWAY The Bigger Carry-On Flex // AWAY Large Featherlight backpack

As a quick aside, I’m so glad I brought the trench—it was definitely one of the MVPs of my travel capsule. If I hadn’t packed it, I would have defaulted to the black Lululemon raincoat most days, which is fine for wet weather but nowhere near as stylish. I’m also glad I chose the cropped version over my Sézane Clyde. That one is gorgeous, but it would have been too much coat for most of my outfits, and for the mild weather we had. Whenever I wanted to take off my coat and carry it over my arm or drape it over the back of a chair, the cropped trench was much less bulky and heavy than the Sézane would have been.

Once back in London, I checked into the Marriott Grosvenor Square for one final night in England. After dropping my bags in the room, I headed back out to explore on my own. Harrods was on my list, along with a stroll past the Chelsea Flower Show. I didn’t change because I’d planned my outfit to last all day, but I did take this quick snap before heading out.

Day Ten: Back Home to Philly

For the flight home the next day, I wore my trusty J.Crew cardigan and striped tank with the black jeans. I could have worn the SPANX set again, but since it was a daytime flight, I figured I’d stick with jeans so I’d feel more polished and put together. By that point, they were nice and stretched out and super comfy, haha!

I had packed the cardigan and tank (along with my pajamas and toiletries) in my backpack so I wouldn’t have to open my whole suitcase. At the last minute, I did swap out the VEJA sneakers for the Paul Greens, though. I’d heard there was a lot of walking at Heathrow, and I wanted the extra support.

J.Crew cashmere cardigan (S) // similar tank // MOTHER Dazzler (30) //Paul Green Hadley (8) // Longchamp tote // Anna Beck Stations necklace // AWAY The Bigger Carry-On Flex // AWAY Large Featherlight backpack

Happily, my flight home was on time and uneventful, so I didn’t regret my outfit choice. The SPANX set still came in handy during our time in the Cotswolds, and I definitely appreciated having it for the overnight flight across the Pond. I don’t think I would’ve slept nearly as well in jeans.

Final Thoughts

All in all, I was really happy with how my travel capsule came together. Everything mixed and matched well, I had the right layers for the changing weather, and I wore everything I packed at least once. The cropped trench and black cardigan were definitely the MVPs, and I’m glad I stuck with my tried-and-true sneakers instead of one of the newer pairs I bought the week before the trip. I could’ve lived without the ballet flats, although I did enjoy wearing them a couple of times.

The pieces I only wore once were the Jenni Kayne Flynn sweater, the AG striped dress, and the Z Supply floral blouse. I could’ve eliminated either the dress or the blouse since they filled a similar role, but neither took up much space, and I appreciated having the variety. And without knowing exactly how the weather would feel, the Jenni Kayne sweater seemed like a smart choice at the time—even though I didn’t end up needing it.

I had considered packing a third cashmere sweater, and I’m so glad I didn’t. Despite watching the forecast like a hawk, there’s just no substitute for being there. Given my unfamiliarity with London weather, I think my final clothing selections worked out perfectly.

The same goes for my coats and handbags. I could’ve managed with just one of each, but since I wore them every day—and they show up in so many photos—I’m glad I had two options for both.

And before someone asks—no, I don’t regret not bringing a dedicated “travel bag” with RFID protection or anti-theft features. I’d much rather carry something I enjoy using that complements my outfits and looks nice in photos. I came to that conclusion after a lot of back-and-forth before my Italy trip.

Sure, those features can offer peace of mind, but people in London (and Rome) aren’t walking around with specialized travel bags every day either. I may eat my words one day, but for this trip, simply wearing my bags crossbody and keeping them close in crowded areas worked just fine.

As for travel bags and luggage, I was very happy with my final choices. Packing the Longchamp tote flat in my suitcase worked out perfectly for carrying a few extra purchases on the way home, and the backpack/carry-on suitcase combo was a great setup overall.

I could have used a slightly larger backpack, but the AWAY Large Featherlight Backpack fit comfortably on my back after I checked my suitcase, and it was perfect for navigating the train stations—it slips easily on and off my suitcase handle, which made it easy to stay agile on the go. (Much easier when full than the AWAY Everywhere Bag that I almost brought instead.)

The Bigger Carry-On Flex kept everything compact and consolidated until the very end of my trip, when I finally needed the extra space the expander allowed. I was going to have to check it on the way home anyway—thanks to the bottle of wine and a reed diffuser I picked up in the Cotswolds—so I went ahead and unzipped the expander to make room for both of my coats and a few other things I wanted to shift out of my backpack and Longchamp tote, which were my two allotted personal items for the plane.

All in all, I’d say those months of preparation and strategizing really paid off. I felt nimble and efficient navigating the train stations and cobblestone streets of London and the Cotswolds, and I never felt like I had to compromise on style. My bags were definitely full (and that suitcase was heavy!), but they were compact and well-organized. I never got bored with my outfits or felt like I was missing anything.

If you’re planning a similar trip, I hope this post gave you some helpful insight. A well-edited travel capsule really does make packing (and getting dressed each day) so much easier and more enjoyable.

  1. Looks like a fun trip, glad you had such a great time! It truly does makes for a more enjoyable experience when all your clothes work. Always a challenge to factor in weather, comfort, and tight packing space, but sounds like you planned well.

  2. I loved seeing how all your outfits came together. You looked great in each one. My favorite is the black jeans, Quince sweater and tan jacket. Does the Quince sweater run small?

  3. Appreciate all the details on what you packed and the wonderful sites on your trip! Have added visiting the Cotswolds to my bucket list!

  4. I’m curious about how your wardrobe choices compared to the other ladies on the trip. Is this something that matters to you at all? My husband and I have done a few group tours…not big bus tours but smaller groups where you really feel like you know everyone after a couple days..and I always care more about fitting in with my travel mates than the locals. Safety in numbers, maybe 😂
We have lived near a very popular tourist destination for almost 40 years and i think this has really impacted my thoughts on travel wardrobes. Locals simply don’t care or notice how you dress unless it is wildly inappropriate.
To be clear, I do like to be purposeful about my travel wardrobe and I’m not criticizing anyone’s preferences or priorities. Just a fun topic to discuss.
I have loved hearing about your trip! We have done London and always talked about going back to see the English countryside. I think we will now move that up on the travel list!

    1. I don’t really think about fitting in with the locals, but I’m not also thinking about fitting in with my travel companions either. I guess I just want to feel like the best version of me when I travel. I want to wear outfits that I enjoy and feel good in, and that are comfortable and appropriate for the weather and the venue.

  5. Thank you for sharing such a detailed post! Love all of your outfits and so glad you had a great trip. We are headed to London in late September and while the weather may be slightly different your post will be so helpful. Do you have a suggestion and/or alternative to the cropped trench? I am not really drawn to cropped trenches? Looking for something classic that will stand the test of time or at least for a few years of upcoming travels. Thank you again for sharing photos of a wondaful trip

    1. I saw trench coats in every length while I was in London. Lots of long ones too but also some mid-length fitted ones. But trench coats were everywhere. So I’d say, pick one that appeals to you.

  6. I really enjoyed seeing how all your outfit planning came together. My favorite was the Quince sweater, black jeans and tan jacket. Does the Quince sweater run true to size?

  7. Thanks for sharing! I’m so glad that COO and a travel capsule worked so well for you. Looks like a perfect trip and you looked fabulous in all the photos.

What I especially liked is how you stayed true to your own personal style while traveling. There’s a lot of info on what to pack for travel out there on the interwebs, and much of it is great advice, but each woman has to really think a trip through completely like you did in order to make COO work, and feel stylish while traveling. I’m already thinking ahead to my trip to France next year for a wine focused cruise down the Rhone. 🙂

    1. That sounds amazing! Yeah, I think what I’m learning from so much travel recently is how important it is to bring things from your own closet that you really love. It’s easy to get caught up in buying special clothes for a certain trip, and then you don’t feel happy about how you look because it isn’t true to your style. I’m also realizing that when I do overpack, I don’t need all the extra “options” because I like everything so much. It’s just more to manage, which is cumbersome. I always go back to your best tip – start with the shoes, and build from there! 🙂

  8. I traveled to London and Paris in 2019 and packed mostly dark neutrals and by day 7 I really was missing colors in my outfits. Your choice of the red top brought that memory to mind. All that walking had me wearing my bulky Brooks walking shoes most days. And I loved the Churchill War Rooms!Nice job packing!

  9. Thanks for the great summary! I agree it takes a lot of planning to travel carryon and a capsule wardrobe. You did a great job! Weather is such a factor!
I also agree about not carrying the typical travel handbag…I did that a couple times…felt frumpy… but have now converted to a small leather bag that only carries my essentials and that I can keep close to my body.
Each time you travel carryon you will learn something and improve on that the next time. We love the freedom and flexibility that carryon provides. Thanks again

    1. It really is freeing! Even on the way home, I was annoyed that I had to wait 20 min at baggage claim for my suitcase, and I missed having a spot to rest my personal bag. I did NOT miss heaving it up into the overhead bin, though, lol!

    1. I did an Instagram Reel, but it’s very fast paced and not really that helpful, lol. I will say that i started out super organized with packing cubes, and by the end of it, I was laying most of my clothing flat in my suitcase. I think it fits better that way, and the AWAY compression panel on the one side does the hard work of keeping it contained.

  10. Looks like a wonderful trip & your wardrobe worked out well! Your cropped trench was a very good choice, as were your shoes. Nothing ruins a trip like sore feet. My family did a Belgium/London/Oxford trip last June and had a day trip to Bourton-on-the-Water & my goodness, how absolutely charming! I hope I’ll get another chance to explore more of the Cotswolds in the future.

  11. Love your capsule travel wardrobe. I like the black patch pocket cardigan but would love to have a v neck in a slightly longer length. Any suggestions?

  12. LOVE this – headed to London next Friday! I am ordering a few of the pieces you packed – black cardigan and cropped trench. Thank you!

  13. Hi! I attended a security briefing by the former Security Chief at the intl corporation I used to work at. He said he and his wife carry different credit cards so if one is stolen/compromised, they can continue the trip. Also, he puts all reoccurring monthly auto debits on a card that is locked up at home and never leaves the house. Again, in case your card is compromised your utilities, insurance, mortgage continue to be paid without interruption. We learned the hard way not to use a card in airport stores for low cost purchases (water, snacks) after getting skimmed for $18,000. We carry small bills and pay cash on quick transactions. You can also use ApplePay, which encrypts your credit card so the number is hidden. ApplePay requires facial recognition so if you lose your phone no one can purchase with it. Best of all, replace your phone while on trip, sign into ApplePay on new device, and you have a continuing payment stream!

    1. Interesting! I used Apple Pay literally everywhere. I don’t remember pulling out my credit card except maybe once at a restaurant. I didn’t even get cash. I didn’t realize it was more secure, I just found it too convenient.

  14. Your outfits looked great! Thank you for sharing this- since we usually travel by car I tend to overpack, and you’ve given me ideas as to how to pare down should we be able to take a big trip in the future. And I’ve decided I need a cropped trench for fall.

  15. I enjoy all of your posts, but found this one particularly helpful. I have saved it for future reference. It has been such fun to follow your trip on Instagram!
I recently purchased a two-tone necklace from Lagos, and have noticed that you wear the Lagos small two-tone hoops. Can you recommend them?

  16. Looks like an amazing trip and your successful capsule wardrobe provides some inspiration for my upcoming travels! Just curious what the temps were like? I’ll be in South America with highs expected in upper 60s. I’ve been investing in layers like the navy Splendid jacket and the Rocky/camp jackets but your black cardigan sure looked useful too. The majority of my trip will involve hiking but I’d like a couple nicer options for our time in the city.

  17. Oh my Goodness! This was a GREAT post to see your day-to-day outfits and the versatility that doesn’t show up (to me as much) when seeing all the clothes in one shop pic! Definitely see the cardigan and trench as being du pull-togethers and love how you managed to look polished for all occasions in jeans, bottoms are my hardest pieces to maneuver. Off to the site for cardigan and black bag now… Glad your trip was such a success, home to home!!!

  18. Fabulous post about your London trip and outfits! I have been following along with your capsule wardrobe decisions. I am so glad the weather was nice for you and that you had such a good time. You have inspired me to try to so a capsule wardrobe for our next trip….

Can you share what you packed for toiletries for your trip and if you had any trouble at Heathrow going through security with your toiletries. I don’t remember if you used a quart size ziplock bag or something else??? I have read horror stories about Heathrow and I am dreading going through there.

    Thank you again!

    1. Yes, I took a picture! I also went over it on my IG story and added it to the London highlight. It’s when I’m wearing the black floral blouse. I didn’t section anything out here in the US b/c I have TSA Precheck, but on the way back over, I put my liquids in a ziplock bag. I didn’t have many because I put most of them in my checked suitcase.

  19. You did great and so enjoyable to read this post. I think the cropped trench really added to your outfits to give style. So cute. I’d like a grey or black one. Now that my hair is grey I don’t like the color you have on me. Any ideas for cropped in the grey or black.

  20. PS do you have any Summer weather trips coming up? I’d like to see a 4 day capsule for over the 4 th for Summer weather. 😉

      1. It’s good to enjoy Summer at home too. You’ve traveled a lot lately. I just thought if you needed a blog idea.

  21. Great post & loved seeing how you put your outfits together from the capsule. Leaving in 3 weeks for Prague & Vienna! The weather will likely be warmer than your trip, but still very helpful to see what you packed. I’ve also decided not to bring a special “travel” handbag—I bought & returned one from Kipling. It was cute, but I don’t think I’d use it at home. I’m now planning to bring a black leather crossbody, as well as a nylon sling bag for a couple of more active days. Hoping to do carry-on but will see how it goes!

  22. Thanks for sharing this. I’m heading to the UK later this summer and appreciate your travel info. One question–did you pack the T3 travel hair dryer or use the one in the hotel? I just bought it (thanks for the sale alert) and wanted to know if it worked for you on your trip.

    1. I brought it. I like having my own, and I was glad I did b/c the hair dryers at the vineyard house were pretty crappy. You’ll need a UK travel adapter. Pro tip: Bring two. I accidentally left one in the first hotel and I was SO glad I had a backup. Also, if I’d had two in the Cotswolds, I would have used both – one on the vanity for my hair tools and one by my bed for my phone. (I used the same outlet for all of the above in London.)

  23. I think I’m starting to grasp the benefit of the backpack vs the tote shape for a trip like this. Most of the time, I’m going from plane, to cab to hotel and that’s it. When you’re moving locations, and multiple hotels, being able to wear the personal item would be beneficial. Okay- off to get a backpack!

    1. Yeah, it was really nice on the train platform, but also at the airport b/c you’re pulling it off and on the suitcase handle more often than you realize, esp when doing a carry on suitcase. It was just so much easier, at least this particular backpack compared to the Everywhere Bag I was using. It was also less cumbersome and not as top heavy on top of the suitcase.

  24. Do you use your own insoles in the Paul Green sneakers? They are not all-day shoes for me with the insoles they came with. I need to experiment with different insoles because I love the look of them and how easy they are to pack.

  25. What a great travel re-cap! Thank you!

I’m heading to glacier national park, Banff, & Lake Louise this summer and definitely considering the spanx air essentials set as my travel outfit. It’s been my winter uniform! So comfy and classy

I love the cropped trench but sadly sold out in my size.

This is a great reminder to stay true to ourselves when traveling. You look fantastic!

  26. I will be traveling to London & Paris this year. Do you think denim/jeans were the norm for all of the places you went?

  27. Great post, JoLynne! I usually overpack and have yet to do a carry-on only trip for a week or more. I’ll use these ideas for sure on my next trip!

  28. Have so enjoyed all the details of your London trip -love your conversations style !! And your clothes style too!!
I am headed to Newport RI for a week w a girlfriend in July – am looking for a crossbody to carry every day but really want to be able to carry a small bottle of water that I can refill during the day -any suggestions ??

  29. Hi JoLynne, thanks for all the great information. I’m wondering how you handle your dirty clothes when traveling. I always struggle with this. Thanks.

  30. This seems like a great trip! I loved your post about the Cotswolds – it’s now on my list! It’s the best feeling when you can easily maneuver your luggage and have what you need. I travel frequently & always get packing anxiety You had really cute outfits and a good variety! How do you pack – Roll, fold, packing cubes?

    1. A mix. I don’t feel like it makes much difference. I usually start out all organized with cubes and by the time I’m on my way back I just stuff it all in there lol.

  31. Great post! I loved all your outfits and appreciate all your thoughts around each outfit. I’ve traveled COO forever and capsule
wardrobes are essential to making everything fit. I’ve been eyeing the Paul green sneakers. Are they heavy?

  32. Hey, Jo-Lynn,
These are all great choices, and I love how you are mixing and matching basics. I especially dig how you have styled the cropped trench!
I agree that you can coordinate well intentioned pieces into one small suitcase if you strategically mix and match. You’re a woman after my own heart! I am headed to Portugal and Spain for two weeks, and I wanted to share some travel basics for future reference. I was not in the market to make any purchases, but the items I recently bought were not only at “rock bottom” sale prices, but they can easily be integrated into future style combinations because they are neutrals. And as an added bonus, they look more expensive than they really are because of combining textures within the same color family. Monochromatic dressing is a win-win!

Banana Republic Factory has some really polished and comfy joggers that come in a variety of colors. I opted for an ecru pair that I will pair with an oatmeal sleeveless T, white cotton Calvin Klein scarf from Amazon , and an alpaca sweater from Madewell. These pieces can be “added or subtracted” as the temperature dictates. I like the idea of a scarf as the plane and airport can be freezing. Veronica Beard also has a suede Goody Bag (on sale now!) that is an elevated carry on that will fit all of your chachkis that you want to stash on the flight.

At any rate, thank you for letting me share my ideas with you! I am so happy I stumbled upon your page. You give me inspiration and new ideas to try.

    Cheers!
    Gina

  33. How did you fit all that in your carryon and toiletries, hair dryer, etc? Definitely need your packing tips as I am an overpacker!!! Your selections look perfect and you looked great! I love the cropped trench! Glad you had a nice trip and great weather!

  34. How did you handle liquids for face and hair? Thats where I struggle with carry on only. What about blow dryer, etc?

  35. Love all the outfits and details. I’m in Surrey UK and read this as walk a lot in tourist areas – our weather is so unpredictable- and want to update my home capsule wardrobe. Never thought of a cropped rain coat before! I’ll be investing in one. I’d also add a little foldable hat for those really ferocious down pours (not very glamorous but envy worth if you do get caught out – Boden are good) and a light scarf or two in favourite colours to accent a plain outfit, pretty looped on a bag, as a belt or to keep neck warm on chilly mornings and evenings, or just to sit on for picnics.

  36. I’m curious. It looked like you too three pair of walking shoes. How on earth did you fit 3 pair of sneakers in your luggage?
I always have to wear the most comfy (if not great looking, Brooks walking shoes) on our trips as we walk SO much.
If you had to take just one of the walking shoes, which would you have taken? Great wardrobe though. I’m headed to London and Paris next month and I appreciate your advice :).

  37. I am going to the UK with my son and daughter-in-law the end of August till early September and have been agonizing over my wardrobe as I need to try to pack “carry-on” style so I don’t hold us up with retrieving checked baggage! Your travel capsule has been so helpful, all the way down to your luggage. I have the AWAY Carry-on Bigger (you had the AWAY Carry-on Bigger Flex I believe) and was concerned that the dimensions are all just slightly over the size stated on Virgin Atlantic’s website for carry-on size. Did you encounter any issues with this size? Possibly you flew another airline. My husband says I’m obsessing over this, but I don’t want to end up having to check my bag!
I love the cropped trench, I have a couple in other colors, but now want the tan color that you included as seems to versatile! 🙂 And you looked wonderful in all the outfits that you put together! I hope I can come close to replicating your look(s)!! I spend too much time on my hair, which will be a bigger issue for me than clothing! I’ve never had “wash-and-wear” hair! I need time for styling, but will be putting it up in clips I’m sure. My son doesn’t allow for much getting-ready time, just sight-seeing time on these trips!!!
I will be looking back through your capsule many times between now and August, fine-tuning my trip wardrobe as well as toiletries and hair “stuff”!!!

  38. Thank you for sharing your tips.
We are planning a visit to England end of May, early June.
How did you get around in the Cotswolds? Primarily by bus or cab/Uber?
    Thanks.

    1. Catherine – be aware that many areas in the Cotswolds are small towns without Ubers and such…make sure to figure out your transportation ahead of time.
