What I Wore Lately Vol. 60

Happy hump day, friends! What I Wore Lately is back on Wednesdays, and I’ve been saving up outfit pictures for a couple of weeks so this one’s a doozie. Let’s dive right in.

WHAT I WORE LATELY: Everyday outfit ideas for women over 40

For size reference, I’m 5’5″ and around 137 pounds, and I usually take a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, and size 8 shoe.

What I Wore Lately

I wore this casual outfit a couple weeks back on a Wednesday when I had an appointment with one of my daughters. The tie dye top is sold out, unfortunately, and I realize the price of these jeans is way out of budget for a lot of people, even when on sale. I tried to find some less expensive options, and nothing is quite the same with the distressing and chewed step hem.

This pair is sort of similar without any distressing, and this pair is lighter but still cute. Madewell has their demi boot style, and LOFT has this light wash pair. Oh, and the Kut from the Kloth Kelsey is a kick flare as well.

The next day I worked from home and then went to get my hair done. These items are true to size, but these jeans have stretched out some. I wonder if I should have sized down.

I threw on this white cardigan when I left for the hair salon because I’m always cold in there, and I was really glad I had it. I wore it the whole time.

The next day was a Friday, and I have nothing on my calendar, but I must have gone somewhere because I’m carrying a bag. This black tank is nice and thick, and while it’s form-fitting, it’s pretty forgiving. It comes in tons of colors.

The next day, C and I went to the mall, so I dressed in white jeans and a black tee. Evidently I was in the mood for black body-con tops! This one is older — it’s from Everlane, and it’s sold out. My earrings are from Amazon, and they’re really affordable. I like the hammered metal for casual looks.

Also, I picked up a black and white strap for my Clare V. tote, for those times when I don’t want the red and navy that came with it. The quality of the metal is noticeably different, which kind of bugs me, but I do like the more neutral strap colors.

That night, we had friends over for a cookout and some pool time, so I changed into shorts and a loose tank.

This next look is from the Sunday before last, and it was rainy and almost cold outside. I picked up these Hunter boots during the #NSale for days exactly like that. I love my knee-high Hunter boots, but they’re a bit much for summertime.

I added my The North Face trench on top. My exact style has sold out, so I linked a similar one below.

When we got home, I changed into a hoodie and slippers for the afternoon. This hoodie is on sale, and I love it — it’s super soft  and cozy inside, but the cropped fit with banded waist gives it some style. I have the small.

That brings us to last Monday, and I had a bunch of appointments for the girls. I wore these comfy utility joggers and a printed tee.

I’m carrying my Tory Burch laptop tote because I brought my work along with me for the downtime in between appointments. I love this bag; it has a zippered middle compartment for your laptop, and then a pocket for a Kindle/tablet, and two smartphone pockets.

I didn’t get an outfit picture on Tuesday, but I think I wore a white tee and jeans. I had a photo shoot that morning and then went directly to my microblading touchup appointment — which is why my eyebrows look really freakish on the next few pictures. They’re always really dark right after the procedure, and I have to keep A&D ointment on them, so they also look kind of shiny.

I took a picture of this outfit last Wednesday, but I changed because I was afraid I’d be too cold inside the office building I was going to.

This is what I wore instead.

The next day, I hosted friends for the pool, so I wore my bathing suit for a good part of the day. This dress makes a great coverup. (The hat is to protect my newly microbladed eyebrows from the sun. I also wore oversized sunglasses when I was outside.) This dress and slides are on sale.

I threw on this tee and shorts for the evening, after my guests went home.

The next day was Friday, and we had the Phillip Phillips concert. I wore this casual tie dye tank with light wash kick flares and my favorite embellished slides. Someone asked advice for what to wear to an outdoor summer concert, and I find them to generally be verrrry casual. My goal was to look cool and casual — but not frumpy.

This tank has that super casual, laidback summer vibe, as do the light wash distressed jeans. These sandals are comfortable and still look stylish, but I probably should have worn my Birks. We did a lot of walking, and while I was fine, these embellished sandals don’t offer any support.

For my bag, I carried a lightweight crossbody. The Hobo brand does bags in this gorgeous lightweight, glazed leather with a pretty print lining, and I’ve been a fan of the brand for a long time. This one is my go-to for amusement parks, concerts, and ballgames because it’s lightweight and durable, and it has lots of compartments. Unfortunately, it was discontinued, but this one is similar.

That brings us to Saturday, and after a lazy day at home, we got dressed to meet friends in Lititz for dinner. I wanted to wear this pink sweater because I haven’t worn it yet this year, so I tried it on with my white skinnies and added these silver wedge slides.

Talbots sweater // Good American jeans (on sale; more sizes) // Stuart Weitzman wedges // Panacea earrings

I came downstairs, and asked Paul if it was too much. He thought maybe it was a little over the top for our venue. It’s a pretty casual area, out in the country. I switched to flat neutral sandals and added a denim jacket, and we agreed this was fine, but it was really too hot for the  jacket.

So then I switched into a black linen tee and white kick flares. I felt like it was still chic and summery, but a little less va-va-voom! Once we got to Lititz, I was glad I’d changed. It was definitely too warm for a jacket, and I would have felt a little out of place with the hot pink sweater with white skinnies.

Oh, and hey! This linen tee was restocked in the black, and my colorblock tote was restocked in the black/tan/white.

I wore this blouse and crop skinnies to church on Sunday. We were supposed to go to a picnic afterwards, so I kept it casual. The blouse is sold out, but I have to give a mention to these Agolde Sophie crops. I forgot how comfortable and flattering they are!

When I want a pair of skinnies, I usually grab my AG Farrahs, but I accidentally pulled these out instead when I was getting dressed on Sunday, and I they feel so soft and comfortable on. I had to look up the fabric content because they are so remarkably lightweight and stretchy, and it’s 43% rayon/33% cotton/17% lyocell/5% polyester/2% elastane. I guess that explains it! They’re hardly even denim, but they look like it. Highly recommend if you need a pair of crop skinnies.

floral blouse (old) // AGOLDE Sophie crop skinnies (also at Evereve) // Dolce Vita slides // hoop earrings // Yurman link bracelet // Everlane tote

Then on Monday, I wore this stripe tee and utility shorts to meet a friend for lunch. Both are sold out, or low inventory, unfortunately.

Nordstrom Signature stripe tee // WHBM shorts // Frame sandals // AllSaints shoulder bag // Madewell earrings // Monica Vinader link bracelet

And finally! I wore this yesterday to meet a friend for coffee, and then to work from home for the rest of the day.

And that’s a wrap! Even though we’re starting to get in back-to-school mode and I’m focusing a lot on fall fashion topics and transition style, it looks like summer weather will be sticking around for a while, so What I Wore Lately will continue to showcase a lot of summer style. People seem to be mixed on which they prefer to see, so hopefully there will be a little something for everyone!

  1. I always like hearing about the process you go through when putting an outfit together. You make me feel less crazy, Jo-Lynne! I will sometimes try on 3 different black tops to find the right one to go with the shorts/pants/skirt I’m wearing. I’ve found that it’s gotten even trickier lately because of the different rises, lengths, and shapes of jeans. I am definitely gravitating toward tighter/shorter tops to balance out the wider hem jeans. I’ve been looking at the camo skirt from EVEREVE for weeks. Ordered it this morning, and would have ordered the black utility pants, but they didn’t have my size. How do the pants fit, Jo-Lynne? What size are you wearing?

    1. They run slightly large. I had the 28 and was afraid they’d bag out, so I tried the 27 but I didn’t like how form fitting they were so I went back to the 28. But I’m sort of on the higher end of a size 28 so I think people on the lower end of a size could size down… if that makes sense.

    2. I whole heartedly agree with Colleen! I sometimes feel crazy trying on so many different tops or bottoms to get just the “right look” or proportions! I end up with a mountain of clothes on our bed. Oy yoy. The pink scalloped sweater and white jeans look terrific on you Jo-Lynne! But I agree the looser black top may be better for a get together and not a date night out. I share both your body type and the challenge when you are well endowed: if you do wear body-con clothes, it is easy to go from body-con to “hoochy”ville very easily, without trying. Love these posts – they are my fav! The smoke and haze has cleared up here: hooray! It is so uplifting to see blue sky and the sun again after a month of smoke and grey haze.

  2. Hi Jo-Lynne,

Where did you get the black and white strap for your Clair V. Tote? I have the same tote and would love a different strap.

    Thank you,
    Ashley

  3. Hi! I see you change your bag almost daily with your outfits. Do you have an organizing system that makes the change quick and easy? You have some beautiful bags and they do complete your outfits so nicely. I tend to carry the same bag for a few months, and then switch it out with another from my small collection. I always enjoy your handbag posts each season. Hope you have a great day!

    1. I just move everything from one bag to the other, lol. My rule is, I move everything. Even if it includes dirty kleenex and loose change. I don’t leave bits and pieces in different bags all over the house. If I’m carrying a smaller crossbody, I might leave the bigger things in the bigger bag I used before, but that’s the only exception. Then I know where to find everything when I go to switch again.

  4. I love seeing what you really wear. We’ve got to dress for the temps that we are having where we live. We are still having lows in the 70’s and highs in the 90’s, so wearing a jean jacket would be too much. I am starting to wear my short sleeve tops that are fallish colors in place of my light colored summer things. Have a great day!

  5. I, too have the Northface trench that I ordered when you linked yours from Zappos a few years ago except mine is a tan color with navy lining inside the collar. You can’t go wrong with the NF trench, the material is silky and wears so well; just the right weight. As always, thanks for your great tips!

    1. So glad it’s worked out for you! It’s one of those pieces I happened across when I was at the mall, not at all in the market for one, but I thought it was so chic and yet so practical. I’ve worn it a TON and it still looks new. Such a good investment.

  6. I would love to know more about your micro blading experience . I’m considering the process too . Also love your white toenail polish … OPI?
    You always look beautiful !

    1. Yes, it’s OPI Alpine Snow. 🙂 I’m very happy with my microblading experience. I have very sparse eyebrows, especially on one side, and I was very self conscious, plus it took a lot of time every day to draw them in with pencil. Now I feel like I look so much better without makeup and when I wear makeup, I save about 5 minutes that I used to spend on my eyebrows.

  7. I love these posts! It gives me ideas and inspiration for outings about town. Unfortunately, it is so hot and humid where I live, North Carolina, I have been resorting to a lot of wicking athletic wear. Looking forward to using these ideas for when it cools down a bit!

  8. You look lovely in all the outfits. Can you do another blog with your current eating and exercise regimen? your transformation is inspiring. How often do you consume wine or other alcoholic beverages? Thanks, Indiana
