Winter Fashion Trends: Oversized Turtleneck

Welcome back to 25 Days of Winter Fashion! Today is day 5, and I’m styling this adorable turtleneck tunic sweater from Nordstrom.

Cozy Oversized Turtleneck + Black Jeans

I first saw this Sun & Shadow Turtleneck on Instagram, and it was love at first sight. I love how it’s oversized but not voluminous, and the turtleneck isn’t super tight. It’s almost a cowl neck, which is my favorite winter style. The sleeves are super long, which is nice and cozy, and it pairs beautifully with skinny jeans or leggings. Since I purchased mine, I’ve seen it featured by quite a few bloggers on Instagram. It really is the perfect turtleneck, and it comes in 6 colors!

Sweater trends this winter are chunky and oversized, and turtlenecks are super popular right now. I love this comfy, cozy style, but you have to be careful or you can look like the abominable snowman. For years, we’ve been advised to wear outfits that provide structure for the most flattering and slimming fit, so this trend seems to fly in the face of all the fashion rules we’ve learned. I’ve tried (and returned) quite a few sweaters this fall, and through my trial and error, I’ve learned a few things.

I prefer these more voluminous sweaters paired with skinny jeans or leggings, although if you’re tall, you can pull it off with a bootcut or flared jean as long as they fit snug in the thighs.

I’ve returned some sweaters that hung at odd angles, but this one seemed to fit perfectly. It doesn’t cling, but it hangs straight and close enough to the body to be slimming. The weave isn’t super thick, so it doesn’t add unnecessary bulk, and the shirttail hem is flattering. It isn’t too long, and yet it’s long enough to wear with leggings if you like. I played it safe and paired it with black skinny jeans and ankle boots. At $54, it won’t break the bank. I wouldn’t mind having this sweater in several colors!

This outfit didn’t need much in the way of jewelry. I wore the pendant that is becoming my signature piece! I can’t believe how many outfits it compliments. To that I just added silver studs for earrings and my favorite chain link bracelet.

  1. Perfect sweater!! It looks great on you! I have a difficult time with sweaters, most just look frumpy on me! Either to baggy or to snug fitting, this one looks just right…kinda like the 3 Bears!! 🙂 Have a great day!

  2. I found the Bonfire poncho at Loft—last one! I had them hold it for me and purchased it today. I love it! It is soft and the colors are luxurious. My husband likes it a lot. I told him he could introduce me as his “squaw” because of the motif. He said, “No, I was thinking seniorita.” I have tried on quite a few ponchos. I love this one because it is not voluminous—doesn’t swallow me up. Thanks for styling it.

  3. That’s a great turtleneck – lots of pretty colors, and it looks lovely on you.
Turtlenecks are so classic – and classy!

  4. I loved this sweater on you so much that I had to purchase one. I received it in the mail and put it on right away. I could not take the itchyness of the sweater and sent it right back. I was so disappointed. I wish I wasn’t so sensitive to wool blends. O_O
