A Quick Sweater Try-On Sesh

Greetings on this foggy Saturday morning! I hope you’re safe and dry, it sounds like there was some really bad weather in parts of the country last night.

I’ve got a short try-on haul for you today. I ordered some sweaters this week, and I’ve been playing around with them.

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ with an hourglass shape, and I usually take a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, and size 8 shoe. I tried to remember to note the size I’m wearing in the links beneath the pictures.

Halogen V-Neck Sweater

sweater (S) // jeans (28) // clogs (9)

Pardon the low light in these pictures. These sweaters arrived late in the day, and I wanted the pictures for today’s post. This Halogen sweater is that super soft and stretchy knit, and there’s no wool or cashmere to irritate sensitive skin. I love the modest v-neck and the details in the knit. It comes in 4 colors, and I ordered three of them!

This charcoal is really pretty for casual wear. It has a subtle high/low hem and really generous sleeve length. The fit is easy, not too bulky, but not form-fitting either. It runs true to size.

The rear-facing camera isn’t nearly as good as the forward-facing, especially in dim light, but I still think it’s helpful to see the back. I was curious to see how the sweater looks from behind, with the high/low hem, and I also wanted to see the jeans and clog pairing, since I hadn’t worn these together before.

These are the AG Mari jeans that I’ve had since last year. They work well with booties with a slim shaft, and I’m also happy to see that they pair well with these clogs.

Here’s that sweater in the cream…

I feel like the cream looks more “holiday” than the grey. Of course, it can also be worn for casual everyday wear too, but you could definitely dress this up with jewelry and pumps for a casual party.

For casual wear, I really like this denim and shoe pairing. I haven’t worn my Mother Hustlers with the clogs before, but it works well from all angles. These jeans are really soft and stretchy and comfortable. I’m between sizes right now, and this pair still fits comfortably in the 28.

And I also ordered this sweater in the red. I rarely order this many colors of the same sweater, but I couldn’t decide and I wanted to see them in person.

This red definitely has holiday vibes. I am really conflicted now, on which color to keep!

FYI, these jeans are on sale at Bloomies, but sizes are limited. You can find more sizes at Nordstrom, but they’re full price. You could reach out to customer service about price matching. They’re also stretchy and comfortable, but not quite as soft as the Mother Hustlers. Size-wise, they’re very similar. I’m comfortable in the 28, even with the extra perimenopausal “fluff” I’ve got going on these days.

VERDICT: I’m keeping one of these Halogen V-Neck Sweaters, but not all three. I need to decide which color I think I’ll wear the most.

Halogen Rib Sweater

This sweater has a more body-con fit, but it’s also soft and stretchy and comfortable. I love the sweetheart neckline and the extra long sleeves. It also comes in black, blue, and grey; and it runs true to size.

I can definitely see dressing this one up for a date night or holiday party, so I swapped the booties for pumps to see if they work with these jeans, and they do! The shorter sweater balances out the cropped jeans, and I like the glimpse of skin at the ankle, and also the neck. I feel like this look is very well balanced.

These jeans are definitely more of a casual wash, though, so I tried the same outfit with my inky black Mother Insiders.

I love this look as well. These jeans also have a sewn hem, which makes them a little less edgy than the Frame Le High Straight, but the cropped flare keeps them modern. I will say, these jeans are verrrry snug in the waist and belly area. I would size up if I were to buy them again.

VERDICT: Keeping! I think this sweater will be a nice one to have in my closet. I can wear it for the holidays and all winter long.

Equipment Madalene Cashmere V-Neck Sweater

sweater (S) // jeans (28; similar for less) // clogs (9)

Yes, you’ve seen this one before, but I re-ordered it when it went on sale during Cyber Week. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I thought I’d try it again. As long as I wear a bra that doesn’t create cleavage, I don’t think it’s too low-cut. (That was the reason I sent it back the first time.)

I really love the details and the quality of the knit. It has a relaxed silhouette with a really nice drape. I love a raglan shoulder, and also the generous sleeve length.

I tried a front-tuck because leaving it untucked with the cropped jeans looked a little off-balance, but I don’t love this look on me. The rise on the jeans is too high, so I feel like it draws undue attention to my belly area.

VERDICT: Keeping this time! I got it for a really good price, and it’s a quality wardrobe essential I can enjoy for years.

AG Mari in 15 Years Mutual

sweater (S) // jeans (29) // boots (8)

Yes, I realize these are not a sweater, but I’m throwing them in here because I have them.

I ordered these jeans to see if I liked this darker wash, and also to try the larger size. As I said, I’m struggling lately with some of my denim being too tight. It’s mostly the belly area, so when I size up, I don’t care for how they fit in the thighs and legs.

VERDICT: Probably returning. I love this wash but I’m not crazy about the fit in the size 29. Maybe I need to give up on this style for a while and stick with Mother and Frame. That said, I do recommend these. The style and wash is great. If they fit you well, they’re a great pair of jeans.

  1. I really like everything about the Halogen sweater! Good luck deciding on the color that will get a spot in your closet. I sure can’t tell that you are dealing with extra fluff now, so you know how to hide it well. Larry went to college in Edwardsville, IL, which sustained damage at an Amazon facility last night, and that is the general area where we were last week. The severe weather is headed our way now. Stay safe!

    1. I love the Mother Looker for a skinny – https://shopstyle.it/l/bBHau – and the Mother Insider for a crop flare – https://shopstyle.it/l/bBHaf.

The Insider is an inch or so shorter than the Hustler and has a slightly lower rise. The Hustler is good too tho, it’s more of an ankle length – https://shopstyle.it/l/bBHay.

For Frame, I like the Le High Crop Straight that I showed here – https://shopstyle.it/l/bBHbk. I’ve also worn the Le High Skinny that I liked – https://shopstyle.it/l/bBHbv.

  2. Anyone else having trouble getting your emails? Started a month or so back. Got Wednesdays but didn’t get yesterday or today’s? Strange.
    Thank you!

  3. Hi Jo-Lynne! Greetings from rainy, dreary Boston! Warm, cozy sweaters are definitely needed here! As for the Halogen sweater, I think you should keep that beautiful red! You have many grey and cream sweaters, I think, and the red can certainly be worn more than just at holiday time. It looks great on you! Hope the sun comes out later today!!

  4. Love the burgundy Halogen sweetheart-neck sweater! I would def wear that tucked into the stonewashed AG jeans (with a wide black belt) with booties AND a cute moto jacket you once showed in a color (I think?) called “Oxblood”!

I hear that storm is supposed to sweep through the Northeast starting in the afternoon. I’m in NJ and, remember we just had one which looked like a hurricane with hail (on a Saturday afternoon as well) around A MONTH AGO. So, everyone please stay safe!

  5. The Halogen v-neck sweater is really pretty on you, love the red but also the cream which seems to show the details better, can see the cream worn with brushed gold earrings. Love Cara’s outfit idea for the sweatheart neck burgundy sweater. Stay safe!

  6. I’m having the same problem with the AG Mari jeans. I bought my first pair about a year ago like you, but recently bought an updated pair of the Mari in a lighter wash and sized up to the 29 because the 28s are really snug in the waist. Problem is the 29 looks/ feels too baggy and I can’t seem to get the look I want. Unfortunately I bought them from the AG store and their return policy is only 30 days and that window has closed.
All the dresses I ordered for my Christmas party tonight have not arrived yet (your loft sweater dress, a wrap mini dress, and a satin midi skirt), so I went through my closet last night and pulled out a couple skirts and tops to try together (one is a cute black lace mini skirt I bought a couple years ago but have only worn once! Fingers crossed i can put something cute together.

  7. If you’re struggling with a few pounds, try keto. It works. I lost 45 lbs on keto starting in early 2019. I’m 5’8 and 61 years old. I went from 190 to 145, where I easily maintain. am never hungry. I am never “hangry”. I don’t snack all day. I don’t graze. I don’t have to keep food in my purse, or worry about when I’m going to eat next when I’m shopping. It’s a liberating lifestyle choice with weight loss as a fantastic side effect.
