Back-to-School Shoe Shopping at DSW

As a former teacher and a kid who always enjoyed school, Back-to-School season has always been a special time of year for me. I love everything about it — getting a fresh start, choosing brand new school supplies, and of course shopping for a first day of school outfit! (And now as a mom, shopping with the kids for their first day of school outfits.)

Dr Martens 1460 Combat Boots // Brooks Launch 8 Running Shoe // Lucky Brand Echo Ballet Flats

Since last year was such a challenging time, this year holds an extra special kind of promise. I have one child going off to college for the first time, another one commuting to his college classes (in-person for the first time since March 2020!) and a third going into her sophomore year of high school.

Even though things may not be quite back to normal, I think it’s safe to say that all of us are beyond excited to return to more of a typical school year.

We always start our back-to-school shopping adventures with the shoes, and my girls have always done well finding shoes at DSW. They like the wide range of brands and the on-trend styles.

As I’ve shared before, R loves the current trends, and she fell hard for these white leather Doc Martens. The instant she saw them, she started telling me how she could envision wearing them with ripped mom jeans and a plaid shirt jacket.

I have to admit, I wasn’t sure how that was going to work out, but turns out, it’s super cute on her!

C has a more classic style, and she loves ballet flats. She wears them with her dresses as well as jeans.

These Lucky Brand leather ballet flats are right up her alley, and the corset lacing at the heel is a fun detail. She says they’re very comfortable, but you may want to size up if in between.

And of course, I couldn’t be left out from the back-to-school shopping! I decided to grab a new pair of Brooks running shoes.

I’ve already worn them out to run and also for a strength training workout, and they are very comfortable with plenty of cushion. Plus, I think this grey/pink color way is so pretty.

Not only are they great for workouts, they’re stylish enough to pair with joggers and a t-shirt for daily errands. These run true to size for running shoes; I wear a 9. (My typical boot size is 8 or 8.5, for reference.)

I’d say we’re off to a good start with our back-to-school shopping!

Not only does DSW have a wide selection of on-trend shoes at great prices, they have a large accessories department with lots of backpacks, water bottles, and other back-to-school necessities. I’ve rounded up a big assortment below.

  1. The white Dr. Martens are adorable! Thank you for reminding us that DSW carries a wide variety of qualities/prices.

  2. I love posts with your girls. They remind me of my three girls….clearly sisters but each with their own unique style. I’m a Caroline as is my oldest, love those classics! My daughter used to say that she would go to Talbots and just let the ladies assume she was shopping for her mom 😂

I still, as an empty-nester and Mimi to seven, have to remind myself that I don’t need new clothes! It has taken a few years to embrace the changes, but one of the fun things about being empty-nesters is getting the last third of summer back!

  3. I see the Quince zip cashmere hoodies are back in stock. Do they run TTS, Jo-Lynne? I want to order one before they are out of stock again. I’m not much for cardigans– I always feel dumpy in them– but I love a nice zip hoodie.

  4. I read your Coffee Talk late yesterday and was happy that Paul is pleased with his new smoker and that the ribs turned out good. I hope that he can keep things under control over the next month so that he will be able to have the necessary surgery, so that he can return to a more normal lifestyle. I totally get both of you dreading & looking forward to the surgery. Oh how I love all of these pictures! The schools in our county has issued a dress code which includes no rips in jeans above the knees, no midriffs or cleavage can be visible, skirts can be no shorter than 3” above the knees, all pants must be worn at the waistline, backpacks and handbags have to be see through, etc. Who knows how much the administration will enforce these guidelines. Like you, I always loved back to school shopping, especially for the school supplies. Good luck with staying on top of everything this week.

  5. Very cute. Fun to see you and your girls. Did your son give up his apt. for good. Commuting from home much cheaper. 🙂 Can’t believe it’s that time of year to talk back to school. The lady above says empty nesting gives you back your last 3rd of Summer but I’ve been empty nested for years and I still can’t get it back. Lol. The stores, community kids, seeing sports practices starting etc etc just gets you in the “Summer is over” feel. Hope you get all you want done this week. It’s good to have a lazy weekend to head into a busy week. Enjoy.

  6. A week or so ago…….you posted a comforter set for college and I can’t find it now. WOuld you please remind me of where to look for it??? THANKS!!

  7. Well there’s no more back to school or classes in our household anymore as our second just graduated from university 🙌🏻Can’t say I’m sad to see the stressful days go and summer can officially end when the weather gets that chill in the air 😉can you share your joggers ? The girls look so good in their outfits so nice they’ll have a normal school year to look forward too!

  8. I admired your Marja captoe booties a few days ago, and checked DSW for something similar. I found these leather booties which have the pointy toe and a higher shaft. https://www.dsw.com/en/us/browse/ulora
They are highly rated and with your $10 off, they are only $50! I find them to be comfortable, but needed to go up a half size. Hopefully they will work with straight leg and boot cut jeans and pants. Thank you for your great info and for the code!

  9. Can you link the joggers you’re wearing here? (If still available) I’ve been looking for a lightweight pair that’s not baggy and like these?
