Hey friends! Full-length flares are having a moment, and there’s been a lot of talk about whether they work with sneakers—and if so, how to style them. So, I put together a couple of looks so we can discuss.

Evereve Thea Pullover (S) // MOTHER Weekender in Layover (29) (petite option) (budget option) // Gola Torpedo Sneakers (8.5) // silver hoops
Flare jeans can be tricky to wear with sneakers because, let’s be honest, they tend to look best with a heel. But that doesn’t mean this unlikely combination can’t look modern and stylish—it just takes a little more thought.
The key is to choose a sleek, low-profile sneaker that looks more refined than athletic. A chunkier style can cut off the leg, whereas a minimal, streamlined sneaker helps maintain a long, uninterrupted silhouette. You kind of want the shoe to disappear under the flare rather than competing with it. Ideally, the hem should graze the top of your foot without a noticeable break for the most flattering effect.

Gola Torpedo Sneakers (8.5) // MOTHER Weekender in Layover (29)
To illustrate this idea, I paired the retro-inspired Gola Torpedo Sneaker with my MOTHER Weekend Flare Jeans in a laid-back light wash. These sneakers have the sleek, streamlined shape I was talking about, plus a subtle wedge sole for a little extra lift. I also love how the color combination plays out—silver footwear is trending, and the low contrast against the light-wash denim helps keep the leg line long and lean.

On top, I went with a casual sweater. The green and navy stripes give the Evereve Thea Pullover a sporty touch, and the length is just right for wearing untucked. I also love the extra-long sleeves and the relaxed silhouette, which adds to the laid-back look.

You could also do a front tuck for a more styled effect and a bit of waist definition. Here’s a side-by-side shot so you can see the difference—I think I actually prefer the untucked version… how about you?

Another option is to top off these full-length flare jeans and silver sneakers with a stylish sweatshirt. The Free People FP Movement Intercept Cotton Blend Sweatshirt has a boxy, relaxed, slightly cropped fit with raised seams and a ribbed step hemline, and it comes in a bunch of fun colors.

FP Movement Intercept Sweatshirt in Hibiscus (M) // MOTHER Weekender in Layover (29) (petite option) (budget option) // Gola Torpedo Sneakers (8.5) // YSL sunnies (budget option) // silver hoops
This bright hibiscus pink is a great way to liven up dreary winter days, and it also complements the light-wash denim and silver sneakers perfectly.

And if silver footwear isn’t your thing, a minimalist white leather sneaker or a suede option in a neutral shade works just as well with flares while keeping that streamlined effect. Last summer, I wore a similar outfit with a different pair of light-wash flares and my VEJA Esplar sneakers, topped off with a sporty hooded muscle tee.

Cruz Sleeveless Hoodie (M) // FRAME Le Easy Flare (29) (option) // VEJA Esplar (39) // Naghedi Hobo (budget option)
I’ve also worn white leather platform sneakers with flares for a more classic look that still feels current. Last spring, after a foot injury had me stuck in sneakers for months, the Paul Green Hadley Platform Sneakers were a lifesaver! They’re incredibly comfortable with super-soft, luxe leather, a padded footbed, and great arch support—plus, they have that timeless look that pairs well with everything. Here are two ways I wore them with the MOTHER Weekender Fray.

LEFT: similar jacket (S) // FRAME tee (XS) // MOTHER Weekender Fray (29) // Paul Green Hadley Platform Sneakers (8) // AWAY The Medium // Goyard St. Louis GM (options here & here)
RIGHT: KUT from the Kloth Kara // Splendid Faye (M) // MOTHER Weekender Fray (29) // Paul Green Hadley Platform Sneakers (8) // Capital Z Soul Sister Sling Bag c/o
So, can you wear flare jeans with sneakers? Absolutely! The key is choosing a sleek, low-profile sneaker, getting the right jean length, and balancing the look with your top half. Whether you go for a casual sweater or a fun, colorful sweatshirt, this combo can be as stylish as it is comfortable.
Which combo do you prefer—laid-back stripes or the bold pop of pink?

Hi
Thanks for the post. I love the look of flares with sneakers, and will try this today! Hopefully my flares are not too long for sneakers.
I also noticed that shirts are not being tucked in as much. I’m going to try this as well! Will the untucked trend continue into the Spring and Summer???
I think it just depends on the top and how it relates to the proportions of the rest of the outfit.
I wear flares and sneaker, the Karhu ones you show in your shop guide with a chunky knit sweater in coordinating green. It is my favorite casual outfit right now. I’m not tucking my sweater in because it is short enough to show waist definition. I feel like if a sweater out cuts you in half it need a bit of tuck. I heard the half tuck is out too, but don’t care. I’ve always done it, so it is a classic for me. I do feel like the half tuck on a button up with one side out and one side in is definitely out. Thanks for post, love your styling ideas posts.
This is a great post! Thank you so much! I love flares with sneakers and being a speech therapist in the schools it is look I can wear that is appropriate and comfortable at the same time. In fact, I just ordered the GAP Factory flares you featured a while back. I have the lighter wash but today ordered the dark wash–70% off too-$18. Hope that’s helpful for some readers.
Thanks for the timely post! I love the look of flares with sneakers and wear this combo often. As an alternative sneaker, I love the Puma Palermo. It comes in lots of colors and is a very comfortable shoe!
Thanks for the rec! I can’t believe I didn’t include any pumas in this round up, I did pretty quickly.
Great, helpful post! I much prefer the green striped sweater on you, it looks more flattering in the photos. I need a new pair of sneakers, going to check out the ones you posted about. Thanks, Jolynne!
Love this post! I’m a Kinder teacher and this is pretty much my uniform. I was looking at the the roomy Rothy tote you linked and I’m considering it. Love that it can be washed. Do you or anyone here have experience with Rothy’s?
Their shoes are really good quality, but I haven’t seen their bags. I was really excited to find this because it looks like a really nice alternative to the Goyard.
I love this combo and it my go-to everyday style.
I’m a stripes girl so the green sweater combo gets my vote! Thank you for this very helpful post!
Questions about Gola silver sneakers. Are the shoes as comfortable as ON? I need arch support. The other two are does the metallic chip off , as some reviewers mentioned and did you take your regular size? Thank you for your response!!
No, I would not say they’re as comfortable as the On, those are running sneakers and these are more like fashion sneakers, but they do have decent support. I haven’t had any issues with the silver flaking off, but I haven’t had them very long.
I like both looks on the top. I’ve been wearing my flares/bootleg jeans with sneakers all fall and winter. I’ve seen other women wearing them too. There’s no way I can go shopping with a heel. I rarely see any women with heels unless they’re working in an office or church. I enjoy these type of posts. I ordered the wedge T-shirt from Loft that you styled this week. I ordered the red color plus added a necklace I’ve been eyeing. They had free shipping on Tuesday. I always try to use your link when I order from Loft.
Thoughts on slip on sneakers like the Vince Warren? I’ve always loved them but don’t think they look current.
Yeah, not super current. But they’re a classic style that doesn’t necessarily look dated if you wear them with more current styles of jeans and pants. If you like them, I wouldn’t get rid of them. I just probably wouldn’t invest in a new pair.
The bold pop of pink is my favorite, but pink is one of my signature colors, so I’m partial towards any shade of it. On Amazon the brand Lucky Step has some great options in low profile sneakers at very affordable prices. They have cooling technology, very cushiony inside, and arch support.
Thank you!! for this post. I needed a tote. As much as I love the LV and Goyard, those are way out of my budget. I travel 4-5x a year and wanted something more polished than my lovenook backpack. The Sam Edelman and Rothy – were both great price and very nice but it came to the Rothy as it can be washed! Also, can i wear my aluminum black Adidas spezial with flares? or are those best with the non flare jeans I have like you have in your posts. i’m back to the office next week but can wear jeans? PS I got the Regine coat from Saks which was a bargain at $92 dollars. it is the nicest coat i’ve ever owned! Thank you so much!!
So glad you got the Regine! You’ll have it for years. Yes, I would wear the Spezial with flares.
Good post, I’ll never jump on the tennis shoe craze but always nice to stay up to date. And yes, that plane crash is an absolute tragedy, my husband flies almost every week and I fly at least once a month, just puts things in perspective that we are never promised tomorrow. My prayers go out to the victims and their families.
I received the Thea sweater as a Christmas gift. I LOVE the way it hangs and the sleeve length, but I found the material itchy, so I returned it. Such a bummer. I love the green on you!
Hello,
I’m new here
Thankyou for showing these perfect looks love!I am always looking for ways to wear the flare jean and the right top to wear.
