French Toast Waffles
Love French Toast? Love waffles? You will LOVE these French Toast Waffles. They’re actually easier to make than French Toast because you don’t have to drag out your griddle. The waffle maker gives them the perfect soft insides and crunchy outside that makes French Toast so delish.
And of course, it has all those delightful waffle holes that cradle the savory butter and the ooey-gooey maple syrup. Mmmmm…..
The nice thing about French Toast is, it’s so easy, the kids can make it. My only word of warning is, you definitely want to give your bread some time to soak up the egg and milk mixture. I was in a hurry for my first batch and it didn’t turn out very well. You want the egg and milk to soak all the way into the bread for the perfect french toast experience.
How to Make French Toast Waffles
I just whipped together a cup of half-and-half (you can use whole milk if you want, but I wouldn’t use anything skinnier) with 2 eggs and then I whisked in a tablespoon of sugar, a teaspoon of cinnamon and a teaspoon of vanilla. I put it in a big 13×9 baking pan and added my bread and let it soak for a good 5 minutes.
You want your bread to be a bit on the dry side. Day old French Bread would probably be wonderful, but I just used sandwich bread that was starting to dry out. I used Udi’s gluten-free bread for me and regular bread for the rest of my family.
Then I buttered my hot waffle iron and cooked them just like waffles! Add some powdered sugar, butter and maple syrup (the real deal, of course!) and yum… perfect with coffee for a luxurious breakfast.
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- loaf of stale bread
- possible toppings: fruit, syrup, powdered sugar, butter
- Whisk together half-and-half, eggs, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla in a 13×9 baking pan. Add the bread, cover to coat, and let it soak for 5-10 minutes while the waffle iron heats up.
- Cook in the hot, buttered waffle iron for 3-5 minutes, top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
