Spring Outfit Formula with a Patterned Blouse

Hi, there, and welcome back to 23 Days of Spring Fashion! Today I’m styling a tried and true spring outfit formula: Patterned Blouse + White Jeans + Denim Jacket + Neutral Shoe.

a fool-proof spring outfit formulawearing: Vince Camuto denim jacket // BR dolman top // Good American white jeans (similar for less) // Steve Madden mules // similar crossbody) // Kendra Scott filigree hoops // Victoria Emerson boho cuff c/o

This outfit is quintessential Jo-Lynne. I think I have at least one variation of this outfit in every spring fashion series. It’s just so easy. Pair a patterned blouse with white jeans, and top it off with a denim jacket. Add neutral shoes, and you’re done. Works. Every. Time.

Patterned Blouse (Statement Piece)

Banana Republic Dolman Top in Navy Floral

This blouse is particularly good. Sometimes these types of tops can be a little too long, too voluminous, or too low-cut. This one is none of the above.

In fact, it’s so good, I also have it in the flight jacket green. I also really like that ivory and white zebra print. It’s such a subtle, classy way to incorporate animal print into your closet. But for for this post, I chose to style the navy floral with white jeans.

There’s something about navy and white that just screams spring. I never get tired of it. Florals are also on trend right now, but I’m not a ruffly girl. I like how this blouse incorporates the floral trend but keeps a classic, tailored silhouette. It’s on sale today, and it runs true to size; I’m wearing the small.

The blouse is the hero piece in this spring outfit formula. All of the other pieces are wardrobe essentials that I mix and match with other pieces in my closet all year-round.

White Jeans (Spring Wardrobe Essential)

These white jeans are the Good American Good Legs skinny jeans. I love them because they aren’t see-through at all. They have a 10 3/4″ rise, and they’re made in the USA with flat tummy tech and a gap-proof waistband in super stretch denim.

If you’re a woman who struggles with jeans being too big in the waist, these are a great choice. I don’t have that issue, but I do have some fluff in the tummy area, and these really do hold everything in. These jeans run true to size; I have the 6.

If you need a lower price point, Kut from the Kloth makes a pair of white skinny ankle jeans with very similar measurements and a slightly lower rise.

Neutral Shoes (Spring Wardrobe Essential)

Steve Madden Faraway Chain Mule

And these mules are a new addition to my wardrobe this spring. I’m a huge fan of a loafer mule, and this bone color is isn’t as stark as white, but it still goes with just about everything. I like the chain detail as well.

These shoes are easy to walk in, and they fit true to size. They come in a few other colors as well; I also ordered the black. They’re a great price for a leather shoe, and I think they look more expensive than they are.

Denim Jacket (Spring Wardrobe Essential)

This is a fool-proof spring outfit formula that you will be able to use over and over again to mix and match pieces in your closet.

While the blouse with white jeans and neutral shoes certainly make a complete outfit, spring days can be chilly, so I like to add a denim jacket when I’m wearing white jeans.

Denim and white makes such a crisp, clean contrast; and it keeps the look on the more casual end of the spectrum. You could also do a navy blazer, if you need something more work-appropriate.

I’ve had this denim jacket for years, and it’s still going strong. It’s the traditional trucker jacket style but with a feminine silhouette. It’s very flattering, and the denim is soft and stretchy but holds its shape well over time. It’s currently 40% off at Nordstrom, and it runs true to size; I have the small.

Accessories

I accessorized the look with silver Kendra Scott filigree hoops and a Victoria Emerson boho cuff with shades of grey and cream. My shoes have gold hardware, but the denim jacket has silver, so I went with silver jewelry since it’s closer to the jacket.

In my perfect world, it would all match, but it’s more modern to mix it up so I don’t let myself get too hung up on that.

This is a fool-proof spring outfit formula that is always chic and put together.

This is a spring outfit formula I will wear to church when it warms up a bit. I would also wear this to dinner with the family or for a business casual event such as a blog conference. I’m really hoping there will be some of those this year!

  1. Love this outfit. I also could not checkout without the flight jacket green. Thanks for all you do to help us look good!

  2. This is so beautiful and such a simple outfit formula that most people probably already have in their closet! So far I am loving the 23 days of spring with you and Cindy Spivey!Thank you, Jo-Lynne!

  3. Super cute outfit and you can’t go wrong with any of these pieces for spring. I ordered those mules in the tan suede but they were a bit to wide for my feet but I have another pair of Steve Madden mules in black that I love so I retuned the tan and ordered the Kandi Camel suede and they are perfect. They have a bit more support and are not as pointy. Just another option for those with narrow feet.
Also I noticed that most white jeans are skinny and I’m not seeing as many in the straight style that’s supposed to be in now?

  4. Such a darling outfit! But all I can think is, “Girl, you must have been sooo COLD!!!!!!”

BTW, as I’m typing this on my Android phone (Galaxy S9?), the text is still appearing all caps. Hoping it won’t look like I’m yelling once this posts!

  5. Love this outfit. I would definitely wear this (and I have similar items in my closet.) I would pair it with a pair of white sneakers, which I have. (I don’t like mules.) Cannot wait to have a chance to wear spring clothes (dependent on weather and Covid.)

  6. Love this look.. just need the weather! Today is -10 so yah not near spring fashion yet but I’m dreaming!

  7. Yes, this outfit has your name all over it. You look very nice in this 2021 version. I can see myself creating a similar look with items I currently own, in an even more casual look. I sure would like to find shoes like you have on in a narrow, since I cannot wear mules in a medium width. We are having rain with the temp staying in the 40’s today, after being in the 80’s over the weekend. Have a great day!

  8. This outfit is exactly me, too….well, except for the mules. I would wear them, but I can’t with my high arches. I am on the lookout for a similar shoe, but with more of a heel or some arch support. I hate that I can’t wear anything flat!

  9. This is one of my very favorite kind of outfits! (Along with a gray cashmere sweater and jeans and boots or booties, which is probably my favorite winter outfit.) I am reluctant to put on white jeans right now, because I have put on some weight this winter, and I don’t think my white jeans will be very, um, flattering at this point.

Side note: should we be looking at straighter silhouettes for white jeans this year, too? I like the white skinnies I have from last year (well, I will like them in about another five pounds), and I don’t know that I really want to buy a new pair…

  10. This is a great look! It is a winning spring style strategy. If it works, it works. I am not usually a floral pattern fan but this one is really appealing with more leaves pattern that flowers. Love the whole look! It is 50F here – yay! So happy to pull out a lighter jacket and leave the puffy coat in the closet. Some of our restrictions are easing up so that is a relief…. hard to believe it has been nearly a year since our lives have changed with COVD.

  11. Very cute outfit…I was surprised to see that the blouse had dolman sleeves. It looks like it fit well under your jacket too.

  12. Cute……I guess navy is the color for the day with you and Cyndi. 🙂 I love navy and white. Very cute outfit and I’m so ready to wear the Vince denim jacket I ordered months ago, per your recommendation, but the weather needs to warm up. It really is the perfect denim color to go with everything and I like the style of the cut of the jacket too. I think we all need this Spring series to brighten up our days.

  13. Hello! I love this formula! However, because I’m pear shaped, not only do I struggle to find white jeans that don’t show every ripple, BUT I don’t want people’s eyes to travel directly to my widest part – my bottom half with white jeans. Because they are the brightest/lightest color your eye is drawn there first. Do you have a variation of this outfit that is lighter on top and darker on the bottom to minimize that? Thank you!

  14. As always, such a helpful post and classy outfit. So flattering, yet easy to put together. Thank you, Jo-Lynne.

  15. Super Cute top and well done outfit, as always!
Do you think an average/ normal bra would show under the arms?
probably difficult to answer, but how does it fit on you?
    Thank you!

  16. No, yours does not show.
I have had dolman sleeve tops that had large arm openings and gave me issues under the arms showing too much bra and skin when worn without a jacket.
Maybe I just need to try a small instead of a medium!
    Thanks for your time!

    1. Ah, gotcha! 🙂 No worries, I was just wondering if mine were showing or something b/c I am wearing a regular bra. No, this does not have deep armholes – but I do know what you mean about some that do. This is cut very modestly, I love it.

  17. Navy is such a wonderful color on you! I love this outfit, and I really liked the print of the blouse. However, at this point in my life, I refuse to spend money on polyester. (Why are these supposedly good quality clothing companies making so many clothes in polyester?!) It does look like spring though! We sadly still have snow on the ground here in New England.

  18. Is that snow in the background, Jo-Lynne? Wow, you are one dedicated woman doing this for us. Thank you! Lovely outfit – this formula is my favourite in spring.
