Pastels for Fall: Grey & Pink

Good morning, friends! Happy Halloween! Today I’m talking about wearing pastels for fall, and I styled a grey turtleneck tunic sweater with pale pink jeans. The striped scarf pulls it all together.

On Saturday morning, I woke up to a scratchy throat and 33º outside. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get warm, so I went into my closet and pulled out this turtleneck and scarf and bundled up.

This Chelsea28 Turtleneck Sweater is from last year, and I was thrilled to find that it’s been restocked at Nordstrom this season. Plus it just got marked down to $49.50. It also comes in ivory and burgundy.

It’s long like a tunic, but it has a slender silhouette and a curved high/low hem. I love how it’s cozy without being bulky. This sweater is made mostly of cotton but it has just a touch of cashmere so it feels soft and luxe. It runs slightly large, so you may want to size down. For size reference, I’m wearing a small.

The only thing I don’t like about it is the dropped sleeves. I feel like they make my shoulders look broader than they really are, but turtlenecks have a way of doing this as well, so the combination isn’t ideal on me. If you have narrower shoulders, it would definitely help balance you out.

This sweater looks best with more streamlined bottoms like these pink skinny jeans, and I also love it with regular denim. In fact, I wore it with distressed bluejeans on Saturday. This shade of grey looks great with medium wash denim. You know, me and my obsession with light neutrals right now!

For this post, however, I wanted to style this grey sweater with my pink jeans. We often put our pastel jeans away at the end of summer, but you can totally wear pastels in fall and winter, and they’re a nice alternative to the earth tones that are so popular this time of year.

The colors in this Gap scarf inspired the pink and grey outfit. It comes in a ton of pretty color combos, and it’s 35% off right now. Use the code BOO at checkout. Shipping is free over $50 so get two — one for you and one for your bestie! Seriously, these would make fabulous Christmas gifts. They’re super soft and cozy.

My jeans are the Paige Verdugo, but there are only a few sizes left. Similar pale pink jeans are these Hudson skinnies and these 7 For All Mankind. For less expensive pair, Old Navy has these Destructed Rockstar Jeans as well as these Rockstar Cord Skinny Jeans.

These Ugg boots were a Nordstrom Anniversary Sale purchase, and I love that they’re water resistant and have a shearling lined footbed. They’re so cozy. They also have memory foam in the footbed for extra comfort.

The 2 3/4 inch heel is comfortable to walk in but gives me some nice added height. At 5’5″ I’ll take all the added height I can get!

Of course you’ve seen this bag 155 times. It’s sold out, but I love the Tory Burch Thea Mini Bag in French Grey and this Kate Spade quilted crossbody in Porcini. For a larger bag, how gorgeous is this Michael Kors satchel in Cinder? And for a darker grey, this R Minkoff Quilted Love Suede Crossbody Bag with Tassel in gunmetal is new, and it’s calling my name. Must. Resist.

If you don’t like to spend a lot on your handbags, Target has a couple of nice options here and here.

I wore my new go-to Double Stud Faux Pearl Earrings with the larger side facing forward. I usually wear studs with turtlenecks and scarves because anything that dangles tends to get caught in the fabric of the turtleneck or scarf.

Loving this pastel striped scarf for fall and winter! Perfect for holiday gift giving too!

I really like the variety of grey tones in this outfit and then the pop of pink in the scarf that is repeated in the jeans in a more muted tone. It’s a different color palette for me, especially for this time of year, but I like it for a change. It actually looks more like winter than fall to me, but it works for either.

  1. Jo-Lynne—I think you’ve shown a perfect way to wear pastels in the cooler months!! I’m all about that, because it’s smart! Why should colors be for only one season??
I can’t believe those are Ugg boots!! I usually think the uggs are not my style, but those look great!
And you’re right—the scarf really pulls it all together!!
    Happy Monday!

    1. Oh yes, UGG has a lot of flattering styles!!! 🙂 I have a pair that I’ve had for years with more of a riding boot style, but they are grey suede. So pretty and very comfy. I need to bring those down from the attic!

  2. I love your boots! I just bought grey booties, but now I think I need tall boots as well. Ha. I’m sure I will find a way to justify another pair of boots in Florida. I love that you thought outside of the box and did pastels for fall.

  3. Another great outfit! Pink and grey is one of my favorite color combinations and it really does work for fall with those fab boots! I really like the silhouette of this sweater.

  4. Such a nice mix up of colors for fall. I love the grey and pink. I ordered that top last week. As soon as I saw it, I remembered how much I loved it when you wore it last winter but couldn’t bring myself to pay full price for it. The sale price is even up there for me, but I think it will be a great basic if I love it. 🙂

    1. Yeah, I was shocked (and excited) when I saw it on the Nordstrom website again this year! It really has a flattering fit and it’s very nice fabric. I think you’ll like it. 🙂

  5. You look awesome! Are you feeling better? Are you still doing clean 30 modified? Where do you get dinner ideas?

    1. Thanks, Anne! I still have a scratchy throat, but it doesn’t seem to be getting worse. Strange, but I think it’s just our crazy weather. I am still doing the clean eating, modified whole 30, although I need to get back on track after this past weekend. 🙂 I basically just keep making a lot of the same things I always have, and a few of the new recipes I found when I started this. We just do a lot of meat and veggie meals, not many sauces, casseroles, etc.

  6. I’ll be stopping at the CVS on my way home from school! Can’t have those treats in my house too early! Along with a chili cook off and Halloween treats in the staff lounge, restart the clean eating tomorrow at the start of a new, fresh month! Happy Halloween!

  7. Stunning, stunning, stunning! What a great idea for fall, pastels! I’m loving the whole outfit. Did you do something different with your eye makeup? Of course you always look beautiful, and maybe I’m imagining things! I HATE the scratchy throat, as I can deal with almost anything but that. Hope that passes quickly. I’m not big into Halloween, so it was always a struggle to come up with something for our daughters to wear. Now that they are mothers, it’s their turn! Our church does a “Fall Costume Party” for the Junior Sunday School, where they play old fashioned games, and have treats. We get very few Trick or Treaters, since we are rural and no longer have little kids around the area. As for the candy temptation, I hear ya. There is a big old bag of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups & Twix bars, calling my name. My husband forced me to buy it just in case….personally I know he wanted the candy, good thing I bought the smaller size! Which means I’ll probably eat two at a time now! Enjoy your evening!

    1. LOL!! But those mini candies are so small… they hardly count. 😉 I think I used blue eye shadow for these pictures – lately I’ve been wearing browns or plums. I have a couple of palettes that I rotate between, depending on my mood. 🙂

  8. Love, love this outfit! I appreciate Jo-Lynn how you can just mouse over the Shop the Post at the end of your Blog and view the price points without going into the Store’s website. This eliminates so much time clicking onto the item to see the cost. Hope you feel better soon!

    1. Thanks, Nancy! Glad that’s helpful. Just know that sometimes things are on sale and the sale price isn’t reflected in those hover prices. Like the Gap sale today isn’t reflected in the scarf in that widget. I wish it price adjusted, that would be nice! 🙂

I still have a scratchy throat but it isn’t getting worse so I think it’s just the way it’s gonna be for a few days. I can live with that. Beats a bad headcold! 🙂

  9. These colors are beautiful on you! I immediately thought of winter too, but they are perfect for fall also. Have a great day and thank you for posting every day, your posts are something I look forward to daily!

  10. Love the whole outfit. Great way to wear pastels this time of year. Your hair looks very pretty too. Happy trick or treating.

  11. Gray and pink is one of my VERY favorite combination! Love your outfit. It’s 88 degrees here today in lovely Dallas and I’m trick-or-treating with my Granddaughter in shorts and a tank! We need this heat wave to go away!

  12. I really like the outfit you share on your site.I was wondering if you have tried any of Dl1961 bootcut jeans, and your opinion on them?
