Summer Fashion Try-On Haul: White Denim, Shorts, Tops & More

Good morning! I have a rare Saturday post for you today. I’ve been wanting to pull another Try-On Haul together, but I was waiting on some packages to come in. I’m still expecting a few more… well, let’s face it. I’m always expecting a few more, haha!

But it seems like a bunch of my recent orders are being shipped in multiple packages. They’ve been trickling in all week, and I expect the rest to arrive today, so I decided to go ahead and share what I have, and I’ll include the rest in my next roundup.

Summer Styles from LOFT, Gap, Evereve & Nordstrom

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 in jeans and pants, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.

AGOLDE Parker Long Shorts in Dough

at Shopbop (29) // at Nordstrom // at Bloomies // Palm Tee (M) // Paul Green sneakers (8)

Details:

  • 4″ inseam; 24″ leg opening; 11″ front rise
  • Button fly
  • 100% organic cotton

I ordered these shorts during the Shopbop sale. I’ve been wanting denim shorts with finished hems, and these caught my eye. I’ve worn the shorter version with the raw hems in the past, but this 4″ inseam is more my speed these days.

I usually size down in the Parker, but I ordered my current regular size, since I’m feeling puffy lately. They do fit in the waist, but they seem a little big elsewhere… especially in the leg opening. I didn’t realize they were 100% cotton, so that means they will likely stretch out.

VERDICT: I might hold onto these and order the size 28 to compare.

AGOLDE Parker Long Shorts in Twister

at Shopbop (29) // at Nordstrom // at Bloomies // Palm Tee (M) // Paul Green sneakers (8)

Details:

  • 4 1/2″ inseam, 24″ leg opening; 11″ front rise; 15″ back rise (size 29)
  • Button fly
  • 100% organic cotton

These are the same shorts, but in a light wash blue denim, and I like them a lot, but I’m also concerned about them growing as I wear them. I ordered the 28 to compare.

Evereve Sierra Denim Vest

at Evereve (S) // MOTHER Weekender (29) // Paul Green sneakers (8)

Details:

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 22″
  • Material: 93% Cotton, 6% Elasterell-P, 1% Spandex Denim

These vests are everywhere right now, and the idea is to wear them alone, like this. I love the look, but I also recognize that it’s a big trend… bordering on a fad, so it will likely look dated in a few seasons.

I don’t care, though. I am here for it! It’s fun and flattering and easy to wear with my favorite denim.

Unfortunately, this is a little too small for me, and I didn’t order two sizes to compare, so I had to place another order and hope the medium fits. I also have this one on order.

VERDICT: I’m hoping the medium works! I’ll keep you posted.

Linen-Blend Wide-Leg Cargo Pull-On Pants

40% off at Gap Factory (S) Splendid Faye Tee (M) // Sam Edelman slides (8)

Details:

  • Mid rise
  • Easy through the hip and thigh
  • Wide leg
  • Inseam: 29″
  • Smooth linen blend
  • Regular, tall, and petite sizes.

Wide leg jeans with a drawstring waist usually don’t work for me, but this pair isn’t bad. I mean, they aren’t as traditionally flattering as a bootcut style, or a wide leg jean with a more structured waistband. But for a light and breezy casual summer pant, I don’t hate them.

The small is a tad snug through the bum, but I know I’ll be drowning in a medium, so I’m hoping they stretch a little with wear. I also plan to wear my Wacoal Body Base Shorty underneath them, to keep everything looking sleek and smooth.

VERDICT: I think I’m keeping these!

Mid Rise Classic Straight Jeans in Bright White

60% off at Gap Factory (29) // LOFT top (S) // Sam Edelman slides (8)

Details:

  • Mid rise.
  • Slim through the hip and thigh.
  • Straight leg.
  • Inseam: 30″ (Regular length)
  • Stretch denim.
  • Short, regular, or long lengths.

Now for some budget-friendly white denim… These are a classic full length, straight leg style in a crisp white denim. The fabric is plenty thick, not see-though at all.

I couldn’t size down in the waist, but I do think they look a little big through the legs. I also prefer a straight ankle style to the full length version, but the full length styles are trending.

VERDICT: I don’t love these on me, but they’re a good option if this is the style you’re looking for. The price is great, too! I mean, you can’t beat quality white jeans for $28! They fit true to size, or you could try a size down, if in between.

Mid Rise Kick Fit Jeans in New Off White

30% off at Gap Factory (29) // LOFT top (S) // Dolce Vita slides (7.5)

Details:

  • Mid rise.
  • Slim through the hip and thigh.
  • Flared leg.
  • Hits at the ankle.
  • Inseam: 25″ (Regular length)
  • Low-stretch denim.
  • Short, regular, or long lengths.

This is a kick crop style, in a soft off-white that pretty much reads as white. I don’t think ecru when I see these. I really like the fit and the silhouette, and the stretch denim feels substantial (not see-through).

The rear pockets are a little large, but the pocket placement is good. I don’t really mind when my white jeans have bigger pockets; I feel like it offers more coverage that way.

VERDICT: If I didn’t already have white kick flares that I love, I would definitely keep these. I highly recommend trying them, if you like the look.

High Rise Wide-Leg Utility Crop Jeans in Vintage White

30% off at Gap Factory (29) // Splendid tee (M) // Sam Edelman slides (8)

Details:

  • High waisted.
  • Slim through the hip.
  • Relaxed through the thigh.
  • Wide, cropped leg.
  • Inseam: 27″ (Regular length)
  • Low-stretch denim.
  • Short, regular, or long lengths.

And this is a wide leg crop style, with utility pockets and a double button closure at the waist. I really like these. They fit close through the hips, which helps the wide leg silhouette not be so overpowering, and they’re the perfect crop length.

VERDICT: Keeping!

Leafed Smocked Shoulder Flutter Sleeve Top

extra 40% off at LOFT (S) // Gap Factory Straight Leg Jeans (29) // Sam Edelman slides (8)

Details:

  • 24 1/4″ long
  • 80% Modal 20% Viscose

I’ve got a few LOFT blouses to share with you. This one is rather unfortunate. I don’t like that length at all, and it has a boxy fit, which makes it even worse.

Plus, it’s fully lined, which really isn’t necessary. I don’t think it would be see-through without the lining, and it makes it rather bulky to front tuck. The pattern is pretty, though, and it pairs well with white denim.

VERDICT: It’s not for me, but you might like it. It might be more flattering on someone taller.

Ikat Palm Ruffle Shell

extra 40% off at LOFT (S) // MOTHER Weekender (29) // Paul Green sneakers (8)

Details:

  • 23 long
  • 100% Rayon

This one is better, especially when front tucked, although with the 23″ length, it doesn’t look look terrible left out either. It’s a little boxy, though. Woven fabrics tend to obscure my curves, but sometimes I prefer a blouse to a knit like a t-shirt or sweater.

I’m not sure about the print, although I love the colors, and I’m glad it’s not a floral. I can’t put my finger on what bugs me about it. I feel like it’s not really my style anymore, but it was once.

Also, the ruffle detail around the neck isn’t really my thing, but it’s not terribly froo-froo, as far as ruffles go. I might like it better under a jacket, so it isn’t so much print, and the ruffle isn’t so obvious.

VERDICT: I’m clearly on the fence with this one. Sometimes I just want a cheerful summer print to throw on with white or blue denim to go out to dinner or church, and this fits the bill. I’ll probably hold onto it for a few weeks and see if I reach for it before the return deadline.

Striped Cotton Blend Modern Pocket Shirt

Extra 40% off at LOFT (S) // MOTHER Weekender (29) // Dolce Vita slides (7.5)

Details:

  • 22″ Long
  • 55% Cotton 45% Modal

This one has more of a modern look to it. I love the way it combines a classic button-up styling with a shorter, boxy silhouette.

They placed the pocket with the contrast stripes, and the shirttail hem are nice details, as well. The cotton/modal fabric has a crisp, yet soft feel to it. Very fun!

Again, this is a rather trendy look, but I think there are enough classic elements that it will be relevant for a few seasons.

VERDICT: Definitely keeping this one. It’s super cute, and different than anything else I have, plus it’s a great price.

Ming Wang Abstract Floral Knit Dress

at Nordstrom // Paul Green sneakers

size XS // size S

Finally, I ordered this dress in the XS after looking at photos of myself in the size small. I think this fit is cute too, and it can go either way, but I prefer the looser fit of the small. I feel like it’s more elegant, and with the perimenopausal fluff, I prefer less body-con styles.

VERDICT: I’m going to return the XS and keep the size small.

  1. Hi, there! I love your try-on hauls. They’re so helpful. Quick question-what’s the different between the Splendid Kate and the Faye? Thank you!

  2. Adore the white vest!
You link to another one- only it goes to some Parker shorts rather than a vest. Help? I think I’ll order the white! I’d also be interested in trying one in a neutral- linen looking fabric, but structured.

    1. As Jo Lynne stated, these vests are trending everywhere: Ann Taylor, J Crew, and Talbots all have structured linen / linen blend vests in neutral as well as colors, so you probably have a store near you, Or you could just use a search engine and try on at home ..

  3. Nice surprise to get a try-on haul on Sat. I’m home sick, missing my woman’s church event today, so feeling sorry for myself. LOL Its been nice to read your blog post all week while sick. We visited my son and wife last weekend and his wife got sick and gave it to me the day we left. This week I read Pippi Longstocking, LOL, so I could talk about it with my granddaughter on FaceTime soon. Its been many moons since I had read this book. I like the light wash denim you have been featuring lately and need to order and try for myself. I feel the leg openings are getting wider and I don’t like that. I love the vest look, so glad you are keeping. I think the medium will fit you right. I also like these vest with a fitted crew neck tee shirt. Try that too. I’d keep the sage linen pants. I think you’ll like them in the Summer. I’ve had black and chambray ones from Old Navy for going on 3 Summers now and they look like new and wash up so great and are so comfortable in the evening when you don’t want to go out in shorts. Old Navy that year really made quality ones and the perfect length for my height. I’m not a fan of full length straight leg jeans or pants. I just can’t get use to the look yet. What is up with LOFT? I use to buy most my clothes there, but now I walk in and walk out or order and send back. I just think something is off about the fit, colors and patterns lately. They seem to cater more and more to the working woman for the styles too. I would just send back the blouse from there you are debating on. I think you could find something you really like from Evereve. I love the crop stripe blouse. Keep for sure and wear also with tank and shorts this Summer. I love the pocket detail of the stripes going the opposite direction. Its nice you let us know your thoughts on items that could end up just fads for a short period, but I think this blouse will be here for awhile. Yes, keep the Medium floral dress. Better fit. Have a great day.

    1. I’ve been feeling the same way about Loft as you do, Kathy. I used to shop there quite a bit, but for months now, I’ve gone in there, had a brief look around, and then left empty-handed. I did, however, buy the striped shirt that Jo-Lynne is showing us today, and I absolutely love it. I have been debating what pants or jeans to wear with it, but now that I’ve seen Jo-Lynne style it with flare jeans, I think that’s what I will pair it with.

Enjoy following Pippi on her adventures! Your granddaughter is blessed to have a grandmother who would take the time to read the book again just so that she could talk about it with her. Your granddaughter will cherish those memories forever!

    2. I hope you feel better soon. I agree, shorts are getting wider. I haven’t had time to measure the Gap ones but they are wide. It’s kind of the style so I’m just going with it, but when I want to look nice, I’ll wear a casual dress or crop pants.

    3. Kathy I agree about Loft’s prints. Some are frumpy like a can soup pattern. One top looked like a quilt pattern. I thought Loft was supposed to be more youthful and casual while Ann Taylor more career oriented. Their petite wide leg pants do fit me well though. Personally I like Loft outlet better but they’re not online anymore.

      1. I agree, unfortunately, about the LOFT prints and styles lately. I keep trying to find stuff there because I like the prices, but they have jumped the shark. I keep trying, though, b/c every once in a while they nail it, like with that stripe button-up.

  4. I love the pic with Savannah looking up at you– so sweet! 🥰 I really like the XS Ming Wang dress on you– it’s so flattering! But I understand wanting to feel more comfortable for sure. I’m wondering if the full-length white jeans might look cute turned up at the hem, since cuffed denim is trending? It always looks so casual/cool to me & screams summer at the beach. OH, and the other vest you have linked goes to the Agolde shorts. Love your try-on hauls, thank you!

  5. Thanks for listing measurements like leg opening. So few manufacturers are that specific, I’m sure it takes you extra time but it’s really helpful! Love those white straight jeans, I fully agree I would prefer them cropped (idk why?). I might cut them and leave the hem raw. Or is that dated now? I agree with the pattern on the loft top, it reminds me of the chevron prints from about ten years ago. Maybe that’s why it’s giving you deja vu?

  6. The Ming Wang dress is Devine!
I have worn vests on and off for years…If you end up with too deep a v in a larger size a tank does the trick. It looks really nice one you.
The Ikat Palm Ruffle shell ? Looks odd (just want to be helpful I hope) The color, pattern, and ruffle? I don’t know, odd or matronly almost? Too much going on, and the color is drab on you.

  7. Hi Jolynne. Thanks for posting the white vest from Evereve. I received mine this week and I’d love to see more options for styling this new trend i.e. with wide jeans, wide cuffed jeans, skirts, shorts, etc.
    I appreciate all your posts!

  8. Love the boxy button-up shirt! It seems as if it would be pretty versatile. I can’t say that I really need the kick fit jeans, but the price is impossible to beat. I’ve got a pair of flare legs arriving this week, so if they work out, I won’t order these, but otherwise, these are a good option.

  9. How high is the “mid-rise” on the GF jeans? I hate it when they don’t list the length in inches.
It seemed strange to me that the 25″ inseam looked longer in the kick jeans than the 27″ looked in the wide legged jeans. Are those inseam lengths correct?
Just trying to save myself having to return things, again!
    Thank you!
