Now that Thanksgiving is behind us and cold weather is setting in, I’m starting to get excited about the winter trends. I always find myself naturally shifting my wardrobe as fall turns to winter, reaching for cozier layers and deeper hues; and with all of the sales going on right now, this is a great time to update your closet with a few new pieces that feel fresh and modern.

While spring and fall tend to usher in the biggest fashion trends, there are always a few fresh ideas and emerging colors to keep an eye on as winter unfolds. It’s fun to see what’s new and figure out which trends are worth trying (or not). So, after a bit of internet research and lots of window shopping, I’ve rounded up five of my favorite wearable winter fashion trends for 2025! Think everyday-friendly styles you can wear without feeling like a fashion experiment.
Of course, personal style always comes first. Not every trend will work for every person, and that’s a good thing! The goal is to stay open to fresh ideas, while still staying true to your personal style. If you see a style you’re unsure about, before dismissing it completely, consider how you might tweak it to work for you—this is how to keep your look current and avoid a style rut.
Easy Winter Trends to Freshen Up Your Look
Here are five wearable winter trends I’m loving for 2025… and one I’m not. Whether you try one or all of them, I hope you find a few fresh ideas to inspire your winter wardrobe!
Grey Denim: A Fresh Take on Classic Black Jeans

MOTHER Weekender in Wanted! // Marc Fisher boots (8) // Vince turtleneck (M) // similar belt // Anthro bracelet
This is easily the winter trend I’m most excited about. Grey jeans are just as versatile as black jeans, but with a little more edge and personality. And while black denim can sometimes feel too sleek or serious, grey denim has a more relaxed, lived-in vibe. It’s the perfect way to keep your outfits feeling current without stepping too far out of your comfort zone.
I recently added the MOTHER Weekender in Wanted! to my closet, and it’s exactly what I was looking for and didn’t know I needed. I’ve already worn them several times in the past week. The faded dark grey tone with subtle whiskering and fading down the thighs gives it that perfectly worn-in look that somehow feels elevated, not sloppy. The flare silhouette of The Weekender is my personal favorite, but if flares aren’t your style, The Tomcat and The Hustler Roller Sneak are other tempting MOTHER denim options in a modern grey wash.

Statement Outerwear: Bold Layers That Instantly Elevate Your Look

teddy coat (S) // bootcut jeans (29) // Blondo boots (8) // caramel leather bag // sunnies (tom ford) // silver hoops
Once you have your everyday outerwear essentials covered, it’s fun to add a statement coat to the mix. This is the coat you reach for when you want your whole outfit to feel more intentional—like you put in extra effort (even if you didn’t).
One of the freshest styles in this category is the scarf coat, and that’s next on my personal shopping list. With its built-in scarf detail, this coat adds both function and flair, and it’s an easy way to make a simple outfit feel polished and put-together. Capes are also making a comeback this season, bringing a sophisticated, tailored vibe that feels a little unexpected but still timeless.

faux fur jacket (S) // similar sweater // MOTHER Weekender in Wanted! // Marc Fisher boots (8) // similar bag // similar belt // layer necklace // spiral earrings
Faux fur, shearling, and teddy coats are still going strong, as well. Faux fur adds instant glamour and a touch of drama, while sherpa and other textured fabrics bring warmth and dimension to your look. A plush faux fur coat can feel luxe for holiday outings, but it’s also surprisingly wearable with jeans and boots for an elevated everyday look.
If you’re looking to add one new outerwear piece this winter, make it a statement coat. It’s the one layer that can turn any outfit into A Look.

Jewel Tones: Regal Hues That Add Color Without Compromising Sophistication

wool & cashmere turtleneck (S) // similar jeans (29) // black boots (8) // shoulder bag
I still love my neutrals, but sometimes I find myself craving a little color after the holidays, and I’m thrilled to see jewel tones having a moment this winter. Think rich, saturated hues like emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red, and amethyst purple—these colors are everywhere right now, and I hear they’ll be going strong into Winter 2025.
I’m always fond of shades of burgundy, but this season I’m feeling particularly drawn to emerald green, and I’m seeing some striking shades of sapphire and amethyst starting to pop up at my favorite retailers. I like the idea of incorporating color into my winter wardrobe with scarves and other accessories.

Square Toe Shoes & Boots: Modern Lines for a Sleek, Fashion-Forward Finish

Frank & Eileen plaid button-up c/o (S) // Frank & Eileen Derry Signature Jeans c/o (30) // Schutz Arissa Square Toe Ballet Flats (8)
If you’re looking for a subtle way to make your outfits feel more modern, I’m noticing shoes with squared-off toes popping up in everything from ballet flats to ankle boots. I especially love this look in ballet flats because it makes them look less sweet, but I’m also feeling drawn to square-toe boots.
Square toe boots have a slightly edgier feel than their pointy-toe counterparts, so they work well for more casual looks. (I’m not saying that pointed toe boots are out, I’m just saying that we’re starting to see more square-toe styles enter the scene after being on the back-burner for a while.)
If you’re ready to refresh your footwear collection, consider adding a pair of square-toe boots or flats to your closet. Here are some that caught my eye.

Monochromatic Dressing: Head-to-Toe Style That Always Looks Polished

AllSaints bomber jacket (S) // Treasure & Bond sweater (M) // Frame Le Slim Raw Hem Palazzo (29) (budget option) // Sam Edelman boots (8) // Hammitt crossbody // similar hoop earrings // layer necklace // VE bracelet // YSL sunnies (similar for less)
Of the five trends listed here, this is probably the least “new” but it’s still going strong into Winter 2025, and it’s the one I’m leaning into the most right now. Monochrome speaks to my quiet luxury side, and you can achieve this chic look with any color tone or pant silhouette.
Black on black is easy, but I also like to combine lighter neutrals, like oatmeal or camel with shades of grey. My sweater is old, but any shade of oatmeal or camel works well with grey jeans. I went with black boots, which work with my hair to bookend the look, but you could also wear off-white for a fresh update.

old Vince sweater (similar here and here) // MOTHER Weekender in Wanted! (29) // rag & bone boots (39) // earrings // similar necklace
And you can also create monochromatic looks with the jewel tones that are trending! The key to making a monochromatic look work is to combine textures, and be sure your fit and proportion is on point. Here, the satin midi skirt creates a pleasing contrast against the cozy knitwear, and the suede boots give it a luxe finish. Although, I think suede pumps or slingbacks would also be nice with this look; the boots are a little heavy with it.

Z Supply Brooke Cardigan (XS) // Maddie Satin Skirt (M) // Dolce Vita Raj Boots (8) // Kendra Scott Sophie Crystal Drop Earrings // VE bracelet
FIT TIP: I sized down to an XS in this sweater so it would be a little shorter and more fitted through the waist, but I needed the medium in the bias-cut skirt.
The One That Didn’t Make The List: Embellished Denim

While it didn’t make my top 5 list, embellished denim is having a moment this winter. From subtle beading to bold rhinestones, playful details are popping up everywhere, adding flair to an otherwise simple pair of jeans.
This is one of those trends that is hitting hard and fast. I often notice trends developing a year or more before they hit the mainstream, but embellished denim was practically non-existent last season, and this season, it is ev-er-y-where. I mean, I even found the pair above at LOFT! You know when it hits LOFT, it’s mainstream.
So, why didn’t it make my list? For one, I already included grey denim and didn’t want two denim trends in my top 5. But also, this trend is a hard pass for me. No matter how expensive they are, embellished jeans just look cheap to me, and they don’t feel authentic to my personal style.
SIDE NOTE: I define my style as modern, polished, and understated. I find it so helpful to put words on my style goals; if you haven’t done that, I highly recommend this podcast to get you started!
All that to say, I’m pretty sure I’ll be sitting this trend out… although my opinions regarding fashion and style are always subject to change without notice. I’ve learned to Never Say Never, and I may be singing a different tune come Spring. But for right now, it’s a no for me, Dawg.
If you do love this trend but prefer a more subtle take, look for styles with just a hint of embellishment at the waist or on the pockets. And if you can’t find what you want at your desired price point, this is an easy DIY project.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Which of these 5 Winter Fashion Trends will you be leaning into this season? And which ones are you sitting out?

I always love jewel tones in the winter! Glad to see gray jeans coming back. Do you think it’ll be more charcoal or do you anticipate any lighter gray? I used to have a pair of dove gray jeans and enjoyed wearing them with lighter colors.
I feel like the darker grey looks more current, and I also remember struggling to make lighter grey jeans work back when I wore them a lot. But as with anything, that is subject to change at any time, lol!
Jewel tones, grey jeans and I love a cape! I don’t care for the embellished jeans. I agree they look cheap even when they’re not. I say that, but on others I like them. It’s just a little much for me.
I love the Maddie Bias cut skirt. It is trendy and warm looking. I like the wine color of it. I would like to maybe see a few different options around it.
I’m really loving the monochrome look and those grey jeans are just oh so tempting (but do I really need another pair of jeans in my closet?) Unlike all of you l do love the bedazzled jeans, and now wish I hadnt got rid of the several pairs I had a few years ago when they were in style, but guess the shapes would have been all wrong now.
On another note, I would really love to see into your closet and how you store everything. I have very little shelving and currently have all my sweaters on hangers.
I have pictures from a few years ago: https://jolynneshane.com/my-2022-fall-wardrobe.html
Love all except the embellished jeans. These have always been a pass for me as were the True Religion with the heavily embroidered pockets and whip stitching. My 19 year old daughter is buying these now from vintage shops LOL. I just bought some Dolce Vita ballet flats with a square toe and love them. Have both square and pointed toe boots and always feel dated in the square toe, don’t know why if they are still in. Suggestion fir a spring post would be trends that are in West coast vs. East coast because I do think there may be some differences. Thanks for a year of great posts. You are the best.
Oh, yes, I remember those True Religion jeans! The square toe was gone for a while, which is probably why it looks dated to you. For me, it is sort of like leopard. I feel like it is back too soon, but I am still ordering some b/c I love the edgy vibe, and I think once I wear them, I will feel like they look modern. The current styles are very sleek and elongating.
The Nordstrom wool and cashmere turtleneck looks so good on you, I love it! Too bad it’s sold out, but at least you get to enjoy it. Also, Quince has some new square toe sock booties that are calling my name.
I know, I was bummed – it sold fast as soon as they put it on sale. I didn’t even get a chance to alert you all.
I might look for a pair of grey jeans, and I love jewel tones! As far as Christmas shopping, I feel like I’ve barely started. Ugh! Gotta take care of that this weekend. Luckily the list of people I shop for is pretty short.
Same, I don’t have many, but balancing the kids is like an algebraic equation, lol!!
I like the grey jeans you’re wearing, jewel tones and monochromatic looks. I already have square toe shoes and boots. I bought mine last year. I thought they came back in style last year. I like both pointed and square toe. I don’t like round toe because my feet don’t. I don’t need any more coats. It seems like trying to keep up with trends is like being on a hamster wheel. Something is in the fall then by winter something else is in. That’s why I don’t spend a lot of money on pieces unless it’s classic and I know I will wear it for a long time. I agree on the rhinestone jeans. They are so tacky. I saw a video on spring trends for next year. Awful. I’m glad I have clothes I like.
Jewel tones are my absolute favorites, since I’m very pale with dark hair and blue eyes. And they bring me back to those 80s days when I had so many things in those colors! I still think about my college graduation dress, a silk shirtwaist in a beautiful jade/emerald green.
I like grey jeans, and I have a straight-leg pair that’s pretty much the shade of the ones you show. And capes! I had a cape coat in the 80s that I still miss, and I have an Irish wool cape that belonged to one of my aunts which I need to unpack and have cleaned. Monochrome is something I’ve never tried except when I was in college and wore lots of all-black outfits- sounds like a fun change.
I tend to feel the same way you do about embellished jeans, with one exception: the sort of boho look with a little embroidery or beading just at the hems. Those I think are pretty, and I could definitely DIY it.
Yeah, I can appreciate that look, even though it isn’t for me. 🙂
I love grey jeans! Sadly, I’ve gained a few pounds so I went through my totes, in there was a pair of grey jeans. Lucky find!
I’m getting into jewel tones, especially blues. I’ve always wore mainly neutrals and lots of black. My daughter suggested I wear some color so I’m trying to incorporate into my wardrobe.
I’ll pass on scarf coats. That scarf hanging seems fussy and when thrown seems pretentious. And, I’ve never been a Cape person. Too much material in the way. So hard pass on both.
I gave away all my square toe footwear when almond toe came in, so I don’t think I’ll invest in more. The pointy toe seems more elegant and goes well with wider leg jeans.
I’m going to pass on embellished jeans…for now.
Love these trend posts. It keeps us in the know even if we do pass on some.
I agree, pointy toe is elegant and flattering, and more timeless. I feel like the square goes in and out of style, but you can always wear a pointy toe without looking dated.
I rediscovered a pair of gray jeans in my closet last week! I’ve always loved jewel tones as they work well with my pale skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes. I had a cape a few years ago, but it was just too much for me. I’m too short and too slim and they are too much fabric. I ordered the teddy bear from Gap Factory and it came in today, but will have to go back. I ordered my usual XS, but it’s just way too big. I ordered it to try to keep myself from ordering the Daphne coat from J.Crew that I’ve wanted since last year, but I think I’m going to order that one after I send the GF one back. Live and learn lol.
Well, at least you tried! LOL! Sorry it didn’t work out. It does run quite large. I think you’ll find the J.Crew lasts you many years. And it comes in petite!
I have a pair of gray jeans that I have been meaning to get out and wear. I’m sure they are straight leg. I had a pair of light gray bootcut jeans years ago but sadly they got too small. I might try embellished jeans if I can find some that aren’t overly embellished.
I love warm versions of jewel tones, square toe shoes, and monochromatic outfits.
I’m with you on the hard pass on embellished denim. They’re not my style. I love classic and feminine looks, and I love bling, but when it comes to jeans, just the basics for me, thank you. No bedazzling, no embroidery, no frayed hems. No bell bottoms, low slung, or unusual washes. I never even could do the ripped knee thing, even when nearly everyone else was. My legs thanked me for that in winter. LOL!
Interesting that you mention embellished jeans because while shopping with a friend a few weeks ago, we saw quite a few pairs in different stores (mostly high end shops including Bloomingdales). We laughed about it and reminisced about wearing True Religion jeans in the 2000s (and rocking those bedazzled pockets :)…. but I had no idea this look was coming back. TR jeans looked much more stylish back in the day compared to the embellishments I’m seeing right now. Also wanted to let you know that I received my burgundy Z Supply sweater and satin skirt from Evereve today (after seeing your picture on the JLS FB post and ordering) and I’m not sure about it. Both are definitely nice pieces (you were right about the softness of the sweater), but when I put on the skirt and sweater together it feels sort of plain. I was planning to wear the outfit to a womens’ holiday gift exchange lunch tomorrow and tried it on with black boots and even added a black belt to brake up the line of burgundy, but I’m not feeling it. Have you worn the whole outfit yet? P.S.- I can’t see the comments again on my iphone and when I tried to enlarge pictures the whole site crashed for me. I switched to my laptop tonight and now I can see everything.
