Happy Wednesday, friends! It’s time for another edition of What I Wore Lately, and this one takes us back to the day I flew to Boston to help my older daughter move back to college. I can hardly believe that was two weeks ago already!

As always, these posts are about what I actually wear on a daily basis, so they can get repetitive, and not everything I’m wearing is currently available. I’ll link similar styles where I can, and I also try to link “similar for less” options for the pricier items I’m wearing.
What I Wore: Two Weeks of Everyday Outfits
SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.
I had only been home for a day after getting back from Nashville, where my younger daughter is starting college this fall, when it was time to go to Boston to help my older daughter with her college move-in. Paul was on a business trip, so I went by myself.
For the flight to Boston, I wore a variation on my “travel uniform” — comfy jeans with a cute top with a lightweight jacket in case it gets cold in the airport or the plane. I wore my new Rails jacket this time, but I think it would look better with a more open neck top. It was a hot day, so I wore my favorite Birks and packed my sneakers. (These Birks are on sale, by the way! They’re perfect for those of us with narrow feet.)

That night, we went to see The Queen of Versailles at the Emerson Colonial Theatre. I was in a rush to get changed after a quick dinner at our hotel, and I forgot to get a picture of what I wore, so I borrowed this picture from back in June when I was in Nashville for Becca’s college orientation. I wore this same dress out to dinner that weekend.

The next morning, I worked for a while in the lobby, and then we moved hotels to be closer to Caroline’s college in the suburbs. We grabbed dinner at a delicious taquería that she loves before turning in early. By the way, this sweater is now available in a washed black.

The next day was move-in day, but we couldn’t get her key until that afternoon, so I spent another morning killing time in a hotel lobby. There was a loud convention going on, and I had an early flight the next day, so I made a split second decision to check out of that hotel and book myself a hotel near the airport so I wouldn’t have so far to go the next morning.

I changed into a tank top before we left the hotel to move her into her dorm because I knew I’d be working up a sweat, and that was a good move. Her dorm elevator was crowded, so I ended up making good use of the stairs. I got my steps in that day, that’s for sure!

Later that night, I took an Uber back to the Boston and checked into my 3rd hotel in as many nights! It was much quieter, and I was happy with that choice.
I was up bright and early the next morning to head to the airport, and I went for another variation on my travel uniform. I like this jacket so much better with the open neck top.

That’s when my flight was delayed so many times due to a maintenance issue that I finally decided to cancel and rebook for the next day. Caroline didn’t need me, so I went back to the first hotel we had stayed in that first night in the city, and I spent the afternoon walking around and doing a little shopping.

The next morning, it was Take Two for a flight from Boston to Philly. This time, I made it home, but not without another maintenance delay. Thankfully, this one was much shorter than the one for the flight I had abandoned the day before. I went back to my original travel outfit, and this time I didn’t need the jacket.

As they say, there’s no rest for the wicked! I had to get up and put myself together for a photo shoot the next morning, and then I wore my new denim skirt and stripe sweater vest to go out to dinner that night.

And believe it or not, I was on the road again the next day. I didn’t get a picture of my travel outfit this time, and I recycled a lot of the same clothes I still had in my suitcase. FYI, this Sunkissed Tee is 25% off!

And I wore a similar outfit the next day. I know I wear these jeans too much, but they just seem to look good with everything, and they’re so comfortable.

I was back home again last Friday, and I met a friend for breakfast that morning. The weather was mild, so I pulled out this linen shirt and paired it with my favorite straight leg jeans, which are 30% off at Bloomingdale’s!

Paul and I went out to dinner that night, and I changed tops and shoes. I don’t really know why, except the linen button-up just seems more daytime to me. And then the sandals didn’t really go, and there was a chill in the air, so I figured I’d give my new mules a test drive.

The next morning, I had a nail appointment, and my first instinct was to throw on a casual t-shirt with my MOTHER Weekenders, but I felt like they were all I’d worn for the past 3 weeks, so I decided to see what else I could come up with.
I grabbed the full length PAIGE Anessa wide leg jeans from the #NSale, but something about this combo doesn’t quite do it for me. I don’t know if it’s that super high rise or the wider leg or what.

When I got back home, I tried on a few more options. These MOTHER The Scooter Ankle Bootcut Jeans had just arrived, so I tried them first. I think someone recommended these when the Outsider didn’t work out, despite me trying 3 different sizes.

I like the wash, but the fit is a little wierd. I feel like they need to be longer, and that rise is soooo high. I think that’s part of the issue with the PAIGE Anessa, as well. They look fine if I don’t tuck my top, but so many of my casual t-shirts look better with a tuck.

Next, I tried the same t-shirt with the KUT from the Kloth Meg High Waist Raw Hem Ankle Wide Leg Jeans, but they have the same look as the PAIGE Anessa. I just don’t love the wide leg jeans with the more relaxed tops. I feel like I have no shape.

Then I tried the MOTHER The Hustler High Rise Frayed Flare Leg Ankle Jeans, thinking that a shorter version of the MOTHER Weekender might be my best bet, but the rise on The Hustler is super high, and I just don’t love the way it draws so much attention to my belly area with the front tuck.

So after all that, I ended up back in my trusty MOTHER Weekenders for the rest of the day. I know… I really need to find another pair I can swap out for these, for the sake of variety, but so far, no other pair quite measures up. At least, not for my casual everyday looks. When I wear heels, I have more options.

I think it’s a combination of the perfect rise, the way they’re fitted through the hips and thighs and then flare out to balance out my hips and shoulders, and that 31″ inseam that makes these jeans that perfect unicorn for me.
Here’s a line-up of all five, to compare. I know, these photos are so small, but I wanted to see them side-by-side.

Okay, moving on! This is what I wore to church on Sunday. I thought the black shoes worked with my hair to bookend the look, but they still look heavy to me with the white tee and light wash denim on top. I like them better when I wear a black top.
I also think I’d like this look with a boxier jacket. I’m kind of over this fitted crop style, but I didn’t have time to change, so I just went with it.

I changed into shorts and a t-shirt after church to spend the afternoon at home.

And then this is what I wore on Monday… I will put these white shorts away now that it’s September, so I figured I’d wear them one last time. I keep my white jeans out year ’round, but not my white shorts.

Finally, then this is what I wore yesterday after I got back from Pilates.

And that’s all I’ve got! Our weather has suddenly turned crisp and cool and very fall like, so I’ll be wearing more transitional outfits from now on, and I can’t wait!

You have been a busy lady! Have you considered cutting your tee shirt to your sweet spot? I did it!
I wear them so much more with the higher rise jeans
I’ve thought of cutting t-shirts, Jan. Does the bottom edge curl up?
A little but in a cool girl kinda way😃. I use my frame
v-neck t shirt as my pattern. It’s approximately 2 in. Past waist band of my jeans.
No belly showing & no bulk around my waist. Give it a try!❤️
Hm, no… The thought of cutting a $100 tee makes me slightly ill, lol. I could try on a cheaper one maybe. I think a more fitted tee would look better.
I did this with a lightweight sweatshirt earlier this summer and I have been wearing it, as a result. It is older and inexpensive so it was low-risk to try.
I agree the black sandals are too heavy for the outfit. I don’t even own black sandals. I only wear black footwear in the fall and winter. To my eyes nudes and browns look so much better on bare skin. If you keep wearing the same jeans it means you’re getting the cost per wear out of them. 😊
I think it depends on coloring. I love black sandals with certain outfits… but not that one. 🙂
Thank you for sharing budget options when you can! I appreciate it. 😊 I hope you’re adjusting to your girls being away. I also have a freshman daughter who’s away for the first time, and a 23-year-old son who has graduated (from Belmont! Love that school!) and is back living at home.
Thank you for the budget options when you can provide them. I especially liked the Boston trip outfits. So many of them will work for fall outfits for me here in the south. I also, like the side by side photos with the margarita tee and jeans. Those photos are so helpful to me.
I know that I say this every time you share your daily outfits with us, but I really enjoy these posts. Over the past few weeks you’ve definitely had plenty of days on planes and in hotels. I hope that you get to stay home for a while now. This morning it feels like Fall here, but unfortunately, it won’t last. Have a great day!
I feel your pain with all the different jeans look. You have a much more discerning eye but sometimes you just feel that the outfit doesn’t work.
I ordered the cute black metallic looking Birks and sadly have to return them. The raised edges are too hard and something about the foot bed hits my toes wrong. They are so darn cute but I know I would never wear them.
I’m sorry to hear that. They do take some breaking in.
I think I’m the outlier of your followers who actually loves the look of black shoes and I like the sandals you wore with your cute skirt outfit…I think you look adorable. Will you toss that fitted denim jacket and replace it with a looser fitting one? (Just curious as I have a similar jacket that I hardly ever wear anymore.) If I want a denim type jacket I reach for my Tommy Bahama Two Palms chambray jacket.
FWIW I like the pair of Mother Scooter jeans on you above paired with your graphic tee. I totally “get” having a favorite pair of jeans that you want to wear all the time because they’re just so easy. I’m like that with my Paige Laurel Canyon (love the fit so much) and my JCrew cropped flare (that are going on 3 years old now but they are truly as comfortable as wearing stretchy pants! LOL!) In fact I wore them to the mall yesterday to JCrew! 😁
That fitted jacket has been in the back of my closet for a while. I don’t love the wash, and it’s also too small, which only adds to the short fitted look of it, so yeah, it’s probably a gonner. I could try the Scooter with some other tops and shoes, I guess. I think I might have sent them back already tho. My assistant came this morning and I cleared out a bunch of stuff.
Still too hot for jeans where I live. This is the time of year when I start to wonder whether those jeans that I haven’t worn for four or five months still fit….😳
LOL, yeah, that is one of the reasons I love living in the Northeast — I can wear my jeans comfortably all year round! I love jeans. 🙂
It is going to be warm here in the PNW through the weekend so I am making a point of wearing pieces that haven’t gotten a lot of play this summer. Like you though, I am not wearing my white shorts until next year, along with sundresses and ultra summery tops. I was struggling with a dark-green top with crochet detailing today. I tried it with a long denim skirt and it felt off. I decided to try light-wash denim shorts and that did the trick. The juxtaposition of the very casual shorts with the slightly nicer top made it work.
Yeah, more and more, I find that juxtaposition is the key to making outfit combinations work and look fresh and modern.
Love seeing all of your outfit combos! You always look great. I live in the Cleveland Ohio area and never wear jeans in the summer. I dislike being hot. And I’ll wear my white shorts til it’s not hot/warm anymore. Call me crazy! I love falling winter, but summer is so fleeting that I take it day by day beginning in September. Especially since summer doesn’t end until the 21st of the month. lol I have to agree about the black sandals, I don’t like black sandals either in the summer except for my walking shoes.
Can you share regarding cutting t shirts to sweet spot? I’d love that tip.
Can’t wait to see what you style for this month and beyond.
I don’t think that’s crazy. 🙂 That’s what’s great about fashion, we can all express ourselves however we like. I don’t know why, but even though the white after Labor Day is an antiquated notion at this point, I still don’t really reach for my white shorts and lighter fabrics at this point in the year. I’d rather put them away and wear darker colors, but then, I generally prefer darker colors all year round. 🙂 And I love black sandals with certain outfits, but not that one.
As far as finding your “sweet spot length” you just have to experiment. Most women have an ideal length that makes their vertical proportions look best, but it depends on body type, not just height. Kelly Snyder introduced me to the concept in her Adore Your Wardrobe course. It’s well worth it if you struggle with dressing your body type.
Can you talk more about how hair color can affect the look of an outfit? I’ve had to transition to dirty blonde from a dark brunette, and feel that cream and tan tops, which I’ve always loved, just don’t seem to look as good with my lighter hair color.
Yeah, that makes sense. It definitely is a factor. I think you may want to consider brighter colors, since your hair is lighter.
