What to Wear to Lunch With Friends

Well, well, well… March strikes again! I was perfectly comfortable wearing this spring outfit when we photographed it last Friday, and then a cold front blew through on Saturday and brought a mini blizzard along with it. Fun times!

Thankfully, this cold snap will be short lived, and we’re going to see the return of spring temperatures this week. This is an outfit I’ll wear to meet a friend for lunch or to take the girls to the mall on a Saturday as soon as the weather warms up.

Caslon jacket (S) // Caslon tee (S) // AG Jeans c/o (28; also at Nordstrom) // Dolce Vita wedges (8) // Tory Burch hobo // rag & bone sunnies // Baublebar earrings // Victoria Emerson Alicante Mini c/o // Victoria Emerson Ashley on Light c/o

In fact, I’m meeting a friend for lunch today, but it’s not quite warm enough to break out the sandals just yet. Maybe by the end of the week.

Anyway! I love this outfit for several reasons. I think the color palette is so perfect for this time of year. The combination of dark denim and olive green with cognac accessories is so pleasing to the eye.

It’s also practical and flattering, with a classic white tee giving the eye a place to rest and a completer piece to provide a layer of warmth for this in-between season.

I really like how this jacket has some of the design elements of military jacket, but it’s still soft with enough stretch to keep it comfortable.

They don’t provide a length measurement, but I think it’s around 21 or 22″ long. I did the “editor’s cuff” to add a bit more style to the look.

This jacket comes in two other colors, and it runs true to size; I have the small.

These jeans are the AG Mari, a slim straight cut with a 29″ inseam, making them somewhere between ankle-length and full-length jeans, depending on your height. They also have them at Evereve.

The fabric is 98% cotton/2% elastane, and they have a great fit and feel. They will give a little and mold to your body, but they don’t bag out. They run true to size or maybe a tad small. I’m wearing my usual 28, and they’re snug in the waist; but if I go up a size, they’re too loose in the legs for my liking.

I’m also carrying the Tory Burch Miller leather hobo, which is a new addition to my handbag collection. I’ve had my eye on this one for a while, but I didn’t want to pay full price. Then I was prepping for a Zulily post, and I realized they have this bag for 20% off. It is guaranteed to be authentic, and it’s available for quick ship (mine arrived in just a few days) but it is final sale.

This bag is the perfect size and shape for everyday, and the nubuck lining gives it a more luxe look and feel. It also has an adjustable strap that fits very comfortably on the shoulder or over the arm. You can see more views of it as well as a video showing it inside and out on the Nordstrom website.

This bag complements these wedge sandals nicely without being too matchy-matchy. This is definitely going to be one of my go-to shoe and handbag pairings for spring and summer.

I wore brown tortoiseshell sunnies because I like how they play into the other brown tones in the outfit, and they’re softer than the black plastic frames I usually prefer. This is a really good price for rag & bone sunglasses, by the way. They’re half-off the full retail price at Amazon.

The white textured hoops to add a summery vibe to this casual look, and I stacked two Victoria Emerson bracelets — the Alicante mini boho cuff and the Ashley on Light wrap.

My only regret with this outfit is that I didn’t think to add a belt. The rise on the jeans is quite high, and a cognac leather belt would take up some of that space, plus it would really pull the outfit together.

  1. Love this outfit! Question: how’s blush pink looking for spring? Totally outdated, or just not cutting edge, or??? I love my Kate Spade blush handbag you recommended a couple years back, and while I think the silhouette is still ok, I’m not sure about the color this year.

    1. Blush is still current. It’s not as trendy as it was for a time but I don’t think it will ever look dated. It’s more of a classic.

    2. I agree with Jo-Lynne that blush pink is a classic. I see it all over fashion this spring. And a blush pink top would look so pretty with the olive green jacket! Wear that handbag with joy!!

  2. Hi, If you could buy only 1 pair of premium denim what specific style, brand, etc would you purchase right now? I don’t want rips just because that’s not really my vibe. Thank you!

  3. This outfit is perfect! I’m trying to lose a bit of weight before I buy anything new but I think I have similar things that might work. Have fun on your outing! I appreciate so much how you explain things so well. It is very helpful.

  4. Love this outfit! Going to lunch with friends Wednesday. I’m going to shop my closet and wear this outfit. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Love this whole look! Wish it was sandals weather here too – maybe in May! Those jeans look fantastic on you. My eye is getting more used to the straight leg silhouette. Enjoy your lunch date with a friend. Hope your daughter made it back to College safely. Glad that she is enjoying her freshman year there.

  6. Love the look. I have it all in my closet but not the darker straight leg Jean. These would be wayyyy to long for me. I bought a sage colored jacket last Spring and ready to get it out. Rainy and windy and dark here. 🙁 Usually not sandal weather here until May. Glad Caroline made it back safely. I know that meloncoly feel. I did it 3 times and it messes with your emotions sending them back.

  7. I love this outfit! I know I will break down soon and buy these shoes! Lol! I’m meeting a friend for coffee next week, and really didn’t know what to wear. This gives me idea inspiration!

  8. Fabulous look!!! Out of the Carlson in green sorrell and Kut from Kloth Bri Utility in olive, which is your favorite? Or if you could only recommend one, which one? I brought the Kut from Kloth Bri in black after seeing you wear it and absolutely Love it! I know I’d love either of the green jackets too!

    1. That’s a tough call. I think I like the Bri a little better, as it’s more of an olive, and a little more casual. I have still have the tags on the Caslon one, and I’m trying to decide if I want to keep both.

      1. Thank you as this is helpful! I have worn the black Bri many times and think I’ll order the olive one from your link as it adds a great piece over tank or tshirt! And it looks great…ready to go!

  9. I liked your outfit as it is of one of my favourite colours(Olive green)😊Also those earrings and sunglass looked elegant and gorgeous☺
