Winter Try-On Haul + Nordstrom 3X Event

Good morning! I’ve been collecting pictures and trying to get this Try-On Haul out to you for a while. Since Nordstrom is doing their 3X event right now, I really wanted to get this to you today.

This is a mix of things that have come in the mail lately, mostly from Evereve, Talbots, and Nordstrom.

Winter Try-On Haul

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ with an hourglass shape. I usually take a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, and size 8 shoe.

Also, I just got the new iPhone, and the camera is blowing out my pictures in a very odd way. I googled it, and evidently it’s a thing. I tried to work with them in Photoshop, but well, the color is going to look really odd in some of these. Reference the corresponding websites for more accurate colors on these items.

Caslon Funnel Neck Cotton Blend Sweater

sweater // jeans // boots

I love this sweater so much in the charcoal, but I have a ton of charcoal sweaters, so I exchanged for this rust color — it is way more rust than it appears here.

It’s cozy and soft, with no wool content. I love the big oversized ribbed funnel neck and extra long ribbing on the sleeves. It’s supposed to be roomy, but you could certainly size down for a closer fit.

Here’s a picture in the charcoal, in case you missed that one.

sweater // jeans // sneakers

Nordstrom Cashmere Essential V-Neck Sweater

sweater (S) // jeans (28) // mules (7.5)

Man, I’m looking rough! I got this sweater in at the last minute, and I wanted to be sure to get it into today’s try-ons, so I took these pix at the end of the day without freshening up my hair and makeup. ANYWAY, this is such a good basic cashmere sweater.

Nordstrom carries these every year and changes them up just a bit. They’re on sale at the moment, plus The Nordy Club members get 3X on orders placed this weekend.

Nordstrom Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater

sweater (S) // jeans (28) // mules (7.5)

This is the turtleneck version. I have it in camel and black. These sweaters run pretty true to size, or you can adjust to your preference. Some like to size up for a little more slouch.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

Also, these jeans are the AGOLDE Toni, but in a new wash. I returned them because I couldn’t decide if they’re different enough from my other pair (shown above with the charcoal grey funnel neck sweater). I was hoping for a slightly darker wash.

Free People Cotton San Vicente Pullover Sweater

sweater (S) // jeans (28) // mules (7.5)

This is a random Macy’s purchase. I’ll be styling it for the blog this week, but I wore it one day already. If you’re looking for shorter lengths, you will like this one. I love the exposed seams and the speckled knit.

Equipment Madalene Cashmere Sweater

sweater (S) // jeans (28; also at Evereve) // mules (7.5)

I have one other Equipment sweater; it’s a grey turtleneck that I scored several years ago on an end of season sale, and I absolutely love it. This v-neck caught my eye because of the details. It’s just a little more special than your basic v-neck sweater.

As expected, the quality is outstanding, and I love how they’re generous with the fabric throughout the body and in the sleeves. I also really like this shade of camel; it’s cooler than most.

However, the price is way up there, and if I’m patient, I can probably find it on sale later in the season. And even more importantly, it’s too low-cut for my personal comfort level. It doesn’t look bad in these pictures, but when I move around, it’s way too low to wear without a cami underneath, and that would ruin the gorgeous neckline, which is part of the appeal. So, sadly, it went back.

Nordstrom Signature Funnel Neck Cashmere Tunic

sweater // leggings (M; also at Evereve) // mules (7.5)

I’m really striking out with the camel sweaters this season. I thought this one looked really cool, and it might even get me to embrace the faux leather legging trend, but nope. The slit on the side is way too pronounced, which is a shame because oherwise, the fit is super cute…

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

I even like the back view. But that slit is a deal breaker, so back it went.

Ann Taylor Shimmer Belted Sweater Dress

dress (S) // pumps (old)

What is it with the v-necks being so low-cut? This dress has so much potential, but that tie at the waist and the super low v-neckline make it no bueno.

Fortunately, I didn’t totally strike out in the sweater dress department…

Talbots Pointelle Knit Shift Sweater Dress

dress (S?)// booties (8)

I ordered this dress in two colors, and I ordered the small in both, and they fit totally differently. I think the rust must be a petite, but it didn’t say that on the tag. Fortunately, I like the olive color better anyway!

This one fits great. It has just enough shape through the waist to be flattering, it’s very soft and comfortable, and it doesn’t cling.

I’m not wearing a slip here, but I will when I wear it for real. I highly recommend this Commando fitted slip for wearing under sweater dresses. It’s a bit of an investment up-front but you will have it for years.

I think the black booties look too harsh with this dress, so I swapped them for a pair of pumps.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

That’s a nice, classic look but then I tried these taupe knee-high boots from last season, and I like this look best of all. This would be perfect for Thanksgiving dinner, if we were going out to eat, or to someone else’s house. I’ll be cooking, so I’ll have to wear this outfit to church instead.

I know someone is going to ask me about tights, and the only thing I can think of that would work would be nude fishnet stockings. I don’t have a pair, but I’ve been meaning to get some.

Fishnet in a skin color is more stylish than plain nude pantyhose, but you could wear the regular pantyhose if you want. I know it’s supposed to be taboo, but honestly, I think you should wear them if you want to. My 18-y/o daughter wears them all the time, and she owns it. As does Kate Middleton, for that matter.

And yes, I know “nude” is not a color. When I say “nude” I just mean, wear a pair that matches your skin tone.

Evereve Everly V Neck Pullover

sweater c/o (S) // leggings c/o (M) // boots c/o (8.5)

Okay, here’s me trying those Commando faux leather leggings again. I just don’t know… they look so weird to me. This tunic sweater, however, is super cute. It’s also a nice, soft knit and very comfortable.

I wasn’t feeling the Sorel Chelsea boots, so I switched to my Aquatalia suede ankle boots. I think this works.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

I also think it works with my chain link mules.

But because I’m still not ready to embrace the faux leather leggings, I tried it with skinny jeans.

I like this look but I think a longer jean would balance out the proportions better.

525 Quarter Zip Pullover

sweater c/o (S) // jeans c/o (28) // mules c/o (7.5)

This sweater is soft and thick, very nice quality. I like all the sailor collar, quarter zip neckline, and ribbed cuff and hem detail; and it’s a beautiful creamy ivory color, but…

It runs really big. It’s supposed to be relaxed and a little slouchy, but I think I’d like it better if I sized down.

Chaser Waffle Henley

top c/o (S) // jeans c/o (28) // boots c/o (8.5; also at Zappos)

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

This is that henley I styled under the shirt jacket in this post. It’s cute on its own too. I wish the curved hemline wasn’t quite so exaggerated, but it’s not a deal breaker.

Evereve sent me a holiday press package that arrived yesterday, with a bunch of goodies! I did a quick try-on before we went to dinner.

BB Dakota Nina Sparkle Dress

dress c/o (S) // booties (8)

I absolutely love this dress for a holiday party. The ribbed sparkle knit is so festive, but it offers the comfort of a sweater dress.

You can throw a jacket on top, if you’re worried about being cold. A faux fur would be great, or toughen it up a bit with coated denim or a leather moto.

Chaser Cheers Tee

tee c/o (S) // jeans c/o (28) // mules c/o (7.5)

How stinkin’ cute is this Cheers tee?!? I love it, and it’s such a soft knit. It’s on the thinner side, but not in a cheapie way. It’s so comfy, I could sleep in it, but I won’t!

It has nice shaping through the waist and (hallelujah!) a straight hemline, with a nice versatile 25″ length. I like it better front-tucked, even though you do lose a little bit of the writing.

It’s especially cute topped off with a leather moto or coated denim jacket.

I will definitely be wearing this outfit to casual holiday parties this season, or even just for everyday.

Evereve Penny Volume Sleeve Top

top c/o (S) // jeans c/o (28) // mules c/o (7.5)

This is another top that’s really soft and comfy, with elevated details that make it a little more special than a basic tee.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

It’s hard to see, but this top has a ribbed texture to it, and of course those lantern sleeves really make it.

Z Supply Plira Marled V Neck Tunic

top c/o (S) // jeans c/o (28) // mules c/o (7.5)

Okay, last one! This is another top that is soft enough to sleep in, and it’s got such a relaxed fit, I do see it more as loungewear than streetwear, but I guess that just depends on your personal style. It would be cute with leggings or joggers, but I threw it on with these same grey cigarette leg jeans because I already had them on.

If I had more time, I would divide this up into categories and give you some captions as to why I recommend these items, but this random roundup will have to do. Maybe I can elaborate more in them for tomorrow, but for now I’m off to spend the day with my daughter. Have a great Saturday!

  1. I laughed about the tights/hose. My 20-30 something daughter and daughters-in-law refer to wearing them as Kate Middleton-ing! As in- I’m wearing the black dress and going to Kate Middleton it. That said, I’m ordering the fishnet tights.

  2. Thanks for another great try on haul. I really appreciate what it takes to put together. I do love the tweedy sweater dress from Talbots. I like the way you styled it showing different footwear. I agree the tall beige boots was the best look, but actually thought any of those styles would go with it. Thanks again!

  3. Thank you for the outfits, great ideas. I also, cannot get on the shiny faux leather leggings trend, but loved the lavender tunic sweater, it will go with regular leggings or skinny jeans. I actually bought the 525 cream sweater, this week, I bought the dress in this style, and plan to wear it Sunday to church with taupe knee high boots. I really enjoy your outfits, and copy them to pinterest several times a week. Have a great weekend.

  4. Great haul, thanks! I went axe throwing just yesterday! I was a complete failure at it but my co-workers (it was part of a work event) all were very good. And I’m probably the most athletic out of all of them! I just could not get the technique down. But it was still tons of fun!! Lots of laughter and cheering for each other!! Have fun and report back!

  5. I wonder if it is the shine of the faux leather leggings that you don’t love? I have two pairs of faux leather leggings and I reach for the more matte ones far more often. The shine of my other ones feels very flashy and good for date night moreso. Just a thought.

  6. What pair and size of jeans are in the first pic with the rust sweater? I like the longer length. The link goes to a page several jeans. Thank you!

  7. Great outfits, especially the sparkly dress and the faux leather leggings with the purplish sweater. I liked them with the mules best.

I love leggings, and I am actually wearing my faux leather ones today. I just make sure that my top is long enough to cover my butt.

  8. Good morning!
Jo-Lynne your link to winter coat took me to BR Trousers?

I love sweater dresses in winter!!

Thank you for this awesome try on haul!!

    God bless you!

  9. I really like the sweaters you featured today. It’s always too hot where I live so I don’t buy many new ones each season. I have so many cute ones in my closet waiting to be worn. The sparkle sweater dress really flatters you! It shows your figure in a tasteful way. The Talbot’s one is nice too; a little more casual for sure.

  10. Faux leather leggings….. I so want to like them (not really sure I want to LOVE them!) but I think what gets me is the crazy super loud SHINE. I just can’t, but so many can! I think there’s a pair that Spanx makes that is more matte. If you’re still wanting to try this style, maybe check them out? I’ve decided this isn’t for me, personally, but so many embrace it so well! PS I do love the equipment sweater and you already know you get what you pay for 😉

  11. I guess my favorite is the green Talbots dress. I am seriously thinking about it. I already have a couple of sweater dresses, but they are really nice to have in the winter, with tall boots.
On another note, I received the Kut coated black jacket this morning. It looks really cool, but I have been too busy to try it on yet. It just turned seriously cold here, but it’s supposed to warm back up in the 50’s a few days next week and I can hopefully wear it then.

  12. So many cute outfits today. I love the sweater dresses and am planning on ordering the slip. I haven’t worn a slip in 20 years or more – TMI? Someone else asked this question – I love the jeans in the first pic with the reddish sweater. What brand and size are they?

  13. I actually like the split side tunic on you and don’t think the slit was too much. Gave the tunic some style. I also like the purplish tunic on you too, but not with the chelsea boot but the other bootie like you said. So cute. I think maybe its the shiny on the faux leggings you might not be liking. Maybe a nice thick ponte legging from LOFT? I have a pair and I like them with the longer tunic or cardigans and don’t feel strange. I don’t think I’d like the shiny either. But, once you got the right bootie, I don’t mind the shiny ones on you. Love the funnel neck sweater but the color I want my size is sold out. I have a hard time finding sweaters without some type of wool content as I can’t wear wool. Have a great day with Becca. I miss those shopping days with my daughters when they were home. Treasure the time you have. PS Do you guys have mask mandates where you live….like for stores and restaurants? We do in Oregon. Takes away the fun of shopping these days. 🙁

    1. No, most places here have no signs up, or a sign saying they are “recommended” or only requested for unvaxxed, but they aren’t mandated. It’s definitely a mix at the mall and grocery stores these days – maybe 50/50 people wearing masks and not wearing them.

  14. Great Try-On!! The sweaters are lovely with the jeans and boots. I also can’t get over the shiny leggings. I have some thicker ponte knit leggings that I simply love, mine are from J. Jill. I wear my longer, tunic sweaters with those and my knee high boots. Such a nice, smooth line. Hope you had fun at the Mall (on a Saturday, yikes!!). 🙂 Ordering on-line is fast and convenient, but sometimes I just love the experience of seeing people and store displays and trying on at the store!

  15. I’m sure that I missed this in one of your blogs but what do you mean by the (c/o) in the links under the photos? Thanks, I really enjoy your blog.

  16. I wonder if you’d like faux suede leggings. I love my faux leather leggings (WHBM) but they have some cute faux suede ones from SPANX. There’s a cute tan or a cool brown that feel different. I’m over plain leggings!

You’d also look cute in faux leather joggers or cropped flares…

  17. I saw a picture of u wearing the zip sweater earlier from evereve and ordered it. I am getting ready to send it back as you are correct it is big. Hoping the smaller size fits as I really like it. Thanks for your work in showing us clothes I wouldn’t try unless I see in on a real person 😀

  18. I ordered the BB Dakota Nina Sparkle Dress and LOVE it! But I need something to wear over it for the time when I have to dash between car and venue in WI winters. Perhaps a black leather moto jacket? Any suggestions? Thanks!!

  19. Please ignore more comment from before about what to pair with the BB Dakota Nina Sparkle Dress. I just went back to the picture and see you already made suggestions. Ha! I was so excited to order it that I didn’t remember the other details. Thanks again!

  20. Not confident enough(!) to want to commit to spending either $90+ dollars on Spanx’s variety faux leathers (or the knockoff brand Target sell for $40), I have a question I’m sorry if it sounds awkward….buuuttt: what does that material feel like? Is it the same type of stretch as in normal leggings? Is it like compression yogawear? Is it like a “liquid knit” texture? I mean: they look as if they’re, literally, “painted on” and — would make me (at least) feel like the only places you would NOT feel self-conscious wearing them would be to a concert or to a Friday night out with co-workers for drinks(!). They come across too “rock n roll” and, like, you have to put a really elongated top or sweater dress over them just to downplay that.
