Camel Turtleneck + Quilted Vest

Happy Monday, friends! Today I’ve got the 4th post in my 5 Ways to Wear a Camel Turtleneck style series.

This time I’m styling my camel cashmere turtleneck with blue jeans and a black quilted vest.

Camel Cashmere Turtleneck Outfit

This turtleneck has finally sold out, or at least there are a very few left in this color, but the price is fantastic if you can manage to nab your size and preferred color. And really, any color turtleneck would work with this outfit. I’ve done this with grey, for sure, and a light or bright color would also be fun this time of year.

If you’re in need of a camel turtleneck, I also like the Quince cashmere turtleneck a lot. It’s reasonably priced and fully stocked, but I recommend sizing up in that one. I have the small in the Halogen, and I wear a medium in the Quince.

My quilted vest is a few years old — it’s the J.Crew Excursion vest that was so popular for so long. This year’s version is okay, but I actually prefer this Amazon Fashion find, if you’re looking for one. For $24. 99, you can’t beat it. See my full review here.

And these are the AG Mari straight leg jeans from Friday’s Try-On Haul. I really like how they pair with the Vince Henderson boots.

For anyone just tuning in, these jeans are a slim straight style with a 29″ inseam. I’m 5’5″ and they hit me just below the ankle bone. This isn’t a silhouette we’re seeing a lot right now, but I feel like it’s really flattering, and I have a feeling it might be making a comeback. Only time will tell, but I’m crossing my fingers.

They’re spendy at full price, and I don’t recommend paying full price for premium denim, so I’ll keep an eye on them and let you know when I see a good deal. I did find a dark wash pair at Saks on a nice markdown, and there are a few different washes at Zappo’s.

I front-tucked my sweater, to keep my proportions balanced, but I didn’t mean for it to be so off-center.

I don’t like it to be right in the middle either, but it must have gotten messed up in the car. I had it all styled the way I wanted it at home, but you know, life happens!

You can see my jewelry best in this picture here. I went with gold since the hardware on my vest is gold.

I chose a set of Madewell coin pendants (there is actually a third piece to this set, but it doesn’t work with the turtleneck, so I just wore the two) and these Kendra Scott chain hoop earrings from the #NSale.

Layering shorter necklaces is very on trend at the moment, and I like how adding some bling in the neckline draws the eye up to the face.

Finally, don’t forget your sunnies! They’re more than eye protection; a stylish pair of sunglasses is an important accessory that makes any outfit look more elevated and intentional.

Overall, I really love how this look came together. It’s simple, but well-balanced and practical for anything from running errands to going to the mall or out to dinner with the family.

And as with all the looks in this series, you can easily take this outfit formula and tweak it to suit your taste. Swap the camel sweater for another neutral or even a bold color, wear a vest in a color or print rather than black, or change out the boots for leopard flats… and of course you can wear any style of jeans you like. The possibilities are virtually endless.

  1. I just wore this outfit yesterday! Thanks for all of the great outfit ideas. I have never owned a cashmere sweater. Love the softness, never expected how warm it is!

  2. Great post! Just wanted to say that when I saw the first picture, I was didn’t remember the jeans and was excited to see where you’d gotten them. They are super flattering on you and I think they look fresh.

  3. This is my kind of outfit! I’ve been wearing slim-fit, straight-leg jeans for probably the past 10 years. Maybe not the height of fashion, but you have to know what looks good on your own body. I tried skinny jeans once and was like, nope, that’s just not flattering on my body type. I live in Austria where we have a lot of months to wear winter shoes, so I find this combination of straight-leg jeans and booties a classic, timeless look, and it’s pretty much my go-to when I don’t want to put too much thought into what I’m going to wear to work.

    1. Hi Alison. So neat to see you are from Austria. Is it cold there now? How is the covid virus situation there? Did you ever have a lockdown?

    2. Yes, I totally agree that you have to do what works for your body. 🙂 And I think almost any style of pant can look modern if styled well. It’s just harder to find good options when they’re not trending.

  4. Have you posted your worst purchases of 2020 on the blog yet? I remembered about it this morning, but I don’t think I have seen it.

  5. I think you look fabulous in this outfit. I got the boots in gray and they arrived Saturday. I only had time to try on one boot, and it fit perfectly. The AG Mari jean is supposed to arrive today. I ordered one size up but it may not be enough. I had ordered the Farrah in one size up and the waist was too tight.  I can’t wait to see. Do they stretch out at least a little?  I also already have the exact sweater. I don’t have a black puffer vest. I have a leopard one, and a navy fleece one. I think either one would work, but I may just have to order the black. I am really trying not to order new clothes, but you are making this really hard😊.  I am really enjoying this 5 ways to wear series.

  6. This is one of your best outfits. You look fantastic! As for your comment about the jean silhouette I have to say that this style as well as full length seem to be everywhere now. Are you not seeing other people wearing their jeans like this in your area? Happy Monday!

    1. Nope, not at all. I don’t live in a very fashion forward area, but when I go closer to Philly, I see some cropped flares and such. But not full length straight in a way that looks modern and cutting edge – not that I think this look is exactly cutting edge, lol. But I don’t see them done the way I do, say, on European influencers and people who really are ahead of the game. Emma Hill does a full length straight quite a bit, but she pairs them with slouchy counterparts, which just isn’t me. https://www.instagram.com/emmahill/ I love her aesthetic, though. Her YouTube videos are great.

      1. I just checked out Emma Hill’s instagram………I totally think you should add some outtakes! Nothing like a blooper to keep it real! 🙂

  7. These jeans look really good on you. I think you found the ones for you if you don’t want to wear skinnies. They would be too long for me. I’m a 27 inseam for regular length jeans. Love the outfit you put together with them. Yes, those boots work great with the jeans. Hope you find the perfect place to stay for your family. Wish I could be brave to do that but too afraid to catch covid.

  8. Several years ago, I bought an Andrea Jovine black quilted vest that looks like an identity match, right down to the pocket placement, the gold zip and snaps, the collar. It’s been a huge favorite of mine and it washes really well. My only complaint is the inner lining seems to be a tad longer than the outer shell and it bugs me!  It doesn’t have down, it has fiberfill. I also have a cream J Crew puffer vest that has side vent zippers, and is down. The collar stands up like the black one. I discovered that if it touches your cheeks makeup will transfer. It’s at the cleaners, fingers crossed. Every dry cleaners in my city went belly up from the lockdown. So I have to travel across a toll bridge that adds 5 bucks to my trip. Drat! But, my fav nail salon is over there and my favorite grocery store so I combine trips to save on gas. Anyway, I said all that to say this — consider your dry cleaning bill for non-washing machine friendly garments. BTW I decided to order those boots after wavering a while. I can’t wear 3 in heels – it just kills the balls of my feet. I read a review that said if you subtract the sole thickness, it’s a lower heel and more comfy. 🤞

  9. Can someone with wide shoulders wear a turtle- or cowl neck top? Before 50s hit, I was very similar in body shape and weight to you. I am 5’5″ and now around about 150 lbs. I don’t have a large chest, but my shoulders seem wide and i usually think I don’t look best in crew neck tops, so I certainly avoid anything higher. What are your thoughts?

    1. The turtleneck is not the ideal neckline for broad shoulders, but with a vest or jacket, you can disguise that a bit. A cowl would be better, because it’s elongating, rather than widening.

  10. Regarding your vacation ~ you may want to check out Ebay under lodging.  My husband and I have been buying our vacation rentals for years this way.  Our son has a college visit  coming up in Florida and we  just booked a 4 night stay/2 bedroom deluxe at Club Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort for $515.  We have stayed at amazing resorts over the years this way.  The only thing you want to make sure of is that the seller has good feedback.  I hope this helps.

  11. Hi Jo-Lynne, I’m enjoying this series as your outfits are easy to replicate. I agree with the other readers that these jeans look great on you.

  12. Planning a vacation does take time and a lot of effort, doesn’t it!  Thank goodness your children are old enough to help with the decision making.  Way to go Becca on the spreadsheet!  I can’t wait to hear the decision y’all made for your beach getaway.  I also really like this outfit!  I can see me wearing the slender straight legged jeans, if I find a pair in my price range.  I hope that you have been able to get outside today.  We have storms moving in, so the clouds are looking more and more ominous, and we are having 14mph sustained winds with 22mph gusts.

  13. I absolutely love this outfit!  And those slim straight jeans are great!  I finally decided to order the black vest you linked on Amazon.  I have a black one, but I don’t love the styling as much and decided I’m going to bite the bullet and replace it with this one.  So, I just ordered it!  I have the same brown one you styled several months ago, so I know the black will be a good fit.  I love vests and this Fall and Winter, I have really worn them a lot.  They are perfect for throwing on for a trip to pick up all my orders curbside since I’m only out in the weather to open/close my hatch.  Hope you find the perfect place to land for your trip to Florida.

  14. For your vacation plans if you’re still researching…..I live in central FL.  For the time of year that ya’ll are thinking about, I would go to the FL west coast.  The east coast will still be chilly for beach days.  St. Pete and Clearwater are pretty perfect locations with Tampa right across the bridge for excursions like Busch Gardens.

    1. This definitely seems to be the consistent advice from those in the know. We were hoping to avoid that drive… lol! Know anything about Cape Coral? I found a few nice looking places there on the canal.

  15. Love this outfit so much! I’m happy to see that the Blondo boots I’ve been wearing with my AG Mari jeans are very similar to the ones you’re wearing. 🙂 I may copy this outfit (except for the camel – will have to choose a different color) tomorrow. 🙂

  16. Love this! I have everything to create this outfit at home but have never thought to wear this outfit combo. Excited to try it!
