Happy Mother’s Day! #CoffeeTalk

Greetings and happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there! This picture popped up in my Facebook Memories yesterday… such a blast from the past! This was 5 years ago…

I’ve had a nice, relaxing weekend with my family all home together again, and we’re going to get together with some of my in-laws this afternoon, so that will be nice.

Yesterday morning I wore my new Boden Melinda dress to our Mother’s Day brunch with the ladies at church, and I got quite a few compliments. I guess people aren’t used to seeing me in dresses!

I have some good news (or not so good… depending on if you already purchased it or not.) Boden is running a 25% off sale for Mother’s Day! And yes, the Melinda dress is included. The code is V6Y5. (I just ordered the navy… I was debating, and with 25% off, I can’t resist.)

Also don’t forget about the Phoebe dress, if you prefer sleeves. I’m not sure if they offer price adjustments or not, but if you already purchased it, you may try calling customer service to see. They don’t seem to have a live chat option.

So I spent much of my time this morning reading a new book I downloaded to my Kindle yesterday, so I don’t have long time to “chat” this morning, but I did want to stop in and say hello.

The Seven Sisters series was recommended to me, and it sounded right up my alley, so I downloaded book one yesterday, and I’ve barely been able to put it down. Sometimes the dialogue seems a little stilted, but overall the story is really intriguing, so I can overlook it. I’m only 20% in, but I think I can recommend it at this point.

I was trying to read A Gentleman In Moscow, which is very well written and definitely intriguing, but after reading it for over a week and realizing I was only 20% in, I decided to set it aside. I rarely don’t finish a book, but it’s one of those that you have to concentrate on, and I’m typically reading while family life goes on around me. It also must be quite long, for me to only be 20% in after a week, and I’m just not sure I have it in me to finish it.

That’s the thing with a Kindle — you don’t realize what you’re getting into because you can’t see how thick a book is or how small the print.

While I’d like to think I’m intellectual enough to enjoy such writing, I have to admit, I really enjoy lighter reads. Maybe I will come back to it, who knows, but for now I’m into this new Seven Sisters series.

There’s not much else to tell, and I need to get moving if I’m going to be ready for church. I hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing Mother’s Day!

  1. A Gentleman in Moscow is one of the best books I read last year. Stick with it or try the audio version and listen in your car while you are running your errands. Beautifully written.

  2. Happy Mother’s Day to you and all your readers!  You are amazing, strong, beautiful, and loved!  ❤️💐

  3. I loved A Gentleman from Moscow, but I am biased since I teach Russian, so all the history references are part of my life 🙂 I can see how it would be tough getting through. Happy Mother’s Day. In case you are looking for something to read: The Great Alone, abook recommended by my daughter. That’s our book club book this month. I loved it!

    1. Ah yes, I think that would help. I have no context for any of the history of the time, I’m ashamed to say. It is one reason I wanted to stick with it, to learn some Russian history.

  4. Happy Mother’s Day to you! I hope you enjoy the day with your family. Keep going with “ A Gentleman in Moscow “- great book!

  5. I just purchased A Gentleman in Moscow to read on my trip. I had hoped it was well written and an interesting read. 😢
I love the expression on your youngest face in the cover picture. Is she your rascal?
Enjoy your day with family, Jolynne!

  6. I’ve 100% got your back that if a book isn’t grabbing you, move on to the next one. Reading is supposed to be a joy, not a chore. I haven’t read Moscow, but I read another book by the same author and it just wasn’t my favorite. I’ve met a ton of people who LOVE that author, and I’m happy for them, but he’s just not for me.

  7. Happy Mother’s Day Jo-Lynne! I hope you enjoy a wonderful day with your family! I am a big reader and rarely ever do I not finish a book I’ve started but I failed with A Gentleman in Moscow… twice 😩 I started the book ( it was chosen by my book club) and just couldn’t get into it. I tried starting it again and I just didn’t get far. Then I downloaded the audiobook thinking this would help and I’d get into better. Nope. But that’s ok! I heard it was truly a great read but I won’t be going back to it any time soon. There are so many others that grab you from the start !

  8. Oh my gosh!! I feel so much better now, because I started reading the Gentleman in Moscow book and couldn’t finish it either!  There are very few books that I quit like that!  I agree it is beautifully written and I was feeling quite guilty about it, but it never hooked me in enough to continue it.  Maybe someday, right?

  9. I loved A Gentleman in Moscow but it is not one I raced through. Also by the same author (and an easier read in my opinion!) is Rules of Civility. Really great!

  10. Don’t give up on Gentleman in Moscow.  It starts slow but is a really good book. My book club reviewed last month and it was one of the best discussions we’ve had!

  11. I could not finish A Gentleman in Moscow either it was tedious.  Just finished The Things We Cannot Say and it was excellent. Happy Mother’s Day!

  12. I could NOT stand A Gentleman in Moscow, and gave up after the first section.  Bleh!  Love that Boden dress on you.  Happy Mother’s Day!

    1. Haha! That’s funny. I like it, but I just don’t feel the need to keep reading and find out what happens next, if that makes sense. I hope you had a lovely Mother’s Day!

  13. I love the Boden  dress! I enjoyed A Gentleman in Moscow but it took me about 6 weeks to read and the ending is worth the read!  However, it doesn’t rank at the top of my favorites list!

  14. Where the Crawdads Sing is a great book, if you haven’t read it.  The title made me hesitant to read it, but it captured my interest almost from the very beginning. Love your daily emails more all the time!
