How To Style A Casual Black Dress Outfit for Spring

Welcome back to 23 Days of Spring Fashion! Today I’m styling a casual black dress outfit for spring.

Old Navy Rib-Knit Button-Front Shift Dress // Dolce Vita Izabel Studded Sandals // Vince Camuto Jean Jacket // R Minkoff Megan Hobo (25% off) // Gucci sunglasses (option) // Kendra Scott hoops // Lucky Brand bracelet // similar pendant

I found this button-up ribbed shift dress at Old Navy, and I liked it so much, I ordered it in the olive and black. It’s currently marked down to $24, with an additional 25% off at checkout, which brings it down to $18!

This dress has a flattering silhouette, and I appreciate that it’s not cut too low in the neckline and around the arm openings. The ribbed fabric and button-front details add some nice texture and dimension to the look.

It’s also a nice length. At least, it works for me at 5’5″. This dress runs true to size (I’m wearing the small) and it also comes in tall and petite sizes.

You could wear this dress with just about any casual shoe — sneaker, sandal, ballet flat… whatever you like! For this look, I wore these Dolce Vita Izabel Studded Sandals.

I absolutely love these sandals. I think they’re so cute with the strappy design and flat silver studs, and the Cafe color matches my skin tone so well.

As you can see, these sandals a little big for me, in that they stand up a bit on the top of the foot, but that’s because I have very flat feet. I actually recommend sizing up half for length.

And while they are a bit roomy on my foot, I wore this outfit home from our photo shoot yesterday, and I was able to walk in them just fine.

Because the sandals have silver studs, I wore silver accessories. These Kendra Scott hoops are lightweight, and make nice everyday earrings because they aren’t large, but they’re big enough to catch your attention.

In addition to that, I wore my diamond pendant to fill the neckline and added a Lucky Brand hammered silver cuff bracelet. And of course, my oversized black cat eye sunglasses are the perfect finishing touch.

I carried a black leather hobo — you’ve seen this bag before. I’m finding myself reaching for it a lot lately, pretty much whenever I need a medium-sized black bag. I love that it has black hardware, so it isn’t distracting from any of the metals in my jewelry.

It has a nice size slip pocket on the outside that should hold most smartphones, but my iPhone Pro Max doesn’t quite fit with the case on. Fortunately, it easily fits into the one on the inside. This bag also happens to be 25% off right now!

To complete this casual black dress outfit for spring, I threw my favorite denim jacket on top. It’s also 25% off right now! (I take the small.)

I don’t know why, but the button-up jacket over a button-up dress looks a little weird to me, but I guess I’m overthinking it. You could also wear a cardigan, of course, but I prefer the structure a denim jacket provides.

I came *this close* to wearing my black studded slides with this look, and while I do love these nude studded strappy slides, I feel like I might prefer black sandals to bookend the look. You could also add a pop of color, dress it down with fashion sneakers. So many options!

What do you think? Which shoes would you wear with this?

If you’re lookin gto get to that $50 free-shipping threshold, this tie dye midi dress and this waist-defined shirt dress are really good too. Both are $18 today! And don’t forget that tie dye sweatshirt dress I styled a couple weeks ago. If you didn’t grab it then, it comes down to $26 in cart.

  1. Love this look. I have about 4 black knit summer dresses and they get so much wear. Dress up or dress down with
outfit especially when you are out for the whole day – can easily change shoes and topping to dress up for evening.
As to your shoe question – no favourites between beige sandals, black sandals or white sneakers – they all serve a purpose – this will be a great Paris outfit for you when you get to go!!!! 🙂

    1. oh dear, 1/2 my comment didn’t show up…yikes..don’t know what happened.
IT should read “Dress up or dress down with shoes, jewellery and jacket or sweater. I love this outfit especially when you are out for the whole day…….”

  2. Oooh…tough call on which sandals I like best with that outfit. Either pair works great! And I feel your pain, about having flat feet. My feet are quite bony on top (not a lot of meat or fat) so when it comes to that style sandal/slide, there is usually too much space between my foot and the sandal strap. This is somewhat frustrating because my sandal/shoe choices are limited…not that you would know from my shoe closet! lol Nonetheless, great outfit! Enjoy the day!

  3. Love those sandals. I like the cafe color as adds length to the leg but your black studded ones would look great too….. more edgy look you like. Great alternative to shorts. What a great price dress.

  4. I love these sandals every time I see you wear them!! I need some with arch support though as even though you have flat feet, I have crazy high arches! Any suggestions for arch support with a nude studded sandal?? Thank you!

  5. I like the nude color sandals (and I’m more drawn to lighter color footwear) but I’m thinking the color is too light for the black handbag or maybe that’s just me🤷‍♀️… the black might finish it off better.. if the handbag was lighter maybe 🤔… I have the same problem with straps they are always too high off my foot…

  6. Love this outfit! I have an Old Navy tshirt dress from last year that was *so* good, and I ordered a new one a couple of weeks ago. I’m excited to try this one too and just placed an order for the black (only one in my size) and also a couple of other black tee dresses to get my order up to free shipping. Another great post and outfit inspiration Jo-Lynne! Love that this one is so affordable too. 😊

  7. I have several Old Navy dresses from one/two years ago that have a scoop neck, short sleeves and soft A-line shape! Love those! Not sure about a button-down type, would it pucker after laundering? But I do love the v-neck and cap sleeves. My favorite part of this outfit is the denim jacket, giving it more structure. As for shoes, I think the fashion sneaker would look great, along with black sandals, or maybe red!!

  8. This is really cute! My daughter and son in law gave me a visa gift card for my birthday back in January, and I haven’t spent any of it yet. I might want to spend some of it on this! Do you know how long it’s on sale for? I didn’t see when I looked at the link, but maybe I missed it?

  9. Omg! When I opeNed your post today i had to chuckle to myself. I’M wear basically the same outFit. Black dress from old navy, same jean jacket and animal print ballet flats.

  10. There are advantages to wearing the skin tone and black sandals, but I can also see you wearing white sneakers with it, for a totally different vibe. Carrying a spring colored handbag would add a different element to the overall look. That is a great budget friendly dress option. I hope you are having a great day!

  11. I like this outfit. Hard to say about the shoes – I like the nude color a lot but the black may look better with the dress. I have a suggestion for a post. Take an outfit like this one and show it with all the different options such as a couple pairs of shoes, different jackets or sweaters, different jewelry and purses. Basically how to wear the main piece in a lot of different contexts. And also show what doesn’t work well! This would be like a 5 ways to wear but all in one place and more changes in accessories than anything. It is helpful to me to see how else I can wear a piece of clothing. Love your blog!

    1. Yes, those are good – and easy to do with mirror selfies. I actually have an “outfit evolution” in tomorrow’s What I Wore Lately, although the top I was styling is no longer available. 😕

Maybe I’ll throw on this dress this afternoon, and try it a few ways! I can include that in tomorrow’s post and decide how I want to wear it to church on Sunday.
