Summer Try On Haul: Madewell, Evereve, LOFT, Everlane & More

Good morning from Maine! It was a wild ride to get here, but now that we’re settled in, I plan to relax and enjoy the lake life for a week.

Before I left, I prepped these try-ons for you. I wanted to get them up this weekend because I figured a lot would be on sale. I’ve got styles from Madewell, Evereve, Everlane, LOFT, Nordstrom, and a few other retailers.

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and around 137 pounds, with an hourglass shape. Unless I say otherwise, I’m wearing a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe.

Madewell Try-Ons

I’ve had some requests for lower priced jeans, so I ordered a bunch from Madewell. I consider Madewell a mid-range price point when it comes to denim. They have a wide variety of styles that range from classic to trendy.

Pro Tip: Sign up for their free Insiders program, and you’ll get free shipping and free returns on all orders. Plus, you earn points on every order that add up to earn cash to spend on a future Madewell purchase.

Madewell Stovepipe Jeans in Ditmas Wash

tee // jeans // sandals

[flex_row][/flex_row]

A stovepipe fit is a slim, straight cut. These jeans have a 10 1/2″ high rise and a 12 1/2″ straight leg opening with a 27″ inseam. I love how the website description puts it: “At once relaxed and refined, these stovepipe jeans have a French-lady-with-a-capsule-wardrobe feel.”

They’re thick, soft and stretchy — very comfortable. I like the wash and the subtle distressing on hem, and the rear pocket placement is good. They run true to size, and they come in standard, petite, and tall. I’m wearing the 28 standard.

Madewell Perfect Vintage Crop in Sanford Wash

tee // jeans // sandals

[flex_row][/flex_row]

These are called the Perfect Vintage Crop, and they have an 11″ rise and a 12 3/4″ tapered leg opening with a 26 1/2″ cropped inseam.

The descriptions on the Madewell website are fantastic. This one reads: “With their waist-accentuating high rise and cropped tapered legs, these are “mom jeans”…if your mom was a ’90s supermodel.”

I actually prefer the shape of these to the one above, they follow the line of the leg in a flattering way. They’re made of a summer-weight denim, but they feel a bit rigid. They will probably loosen up with wear.

The petite sizes sold out, but they do come in a tall option. I’m wearing the 28 standard.

Madewell 11 inch High-Rise Skinny Crop in Welling Wash

tee // jeans // sandals

[flex_row][/flex_row]

These jeans have an 11″ high rise and a 10 1/4″ skinny leg opening with a 27″ inseam. In other words, they’re a good old-fashioned skinny jean. The 27″ inseam will be crop or ankle-length, depending on your height. (There are no petite or tall sizes.)

Because they have Tencel in the fabric, they are amazingly soft and comfortable. They feel thick, soft, and stretchy on the body. I like this super light wash and almost-crop length.

The 11″ rise is quite high, but it feels nice and holds everything in. I would probably like them better with a top that doesn’t need a front tuck. They’re true to size; I’m wearing the 28.

Madewell 10 inch High-Rise Skinny Crop in Wellington Wash

top // jeans // sandals

[flex_row][/flex_row]

These are very similar to the pair above, but with a 10″ rise and a lighter weight fabric. They have a 10 1/4″ high rise and a 9 3/4″ skinny leg opening with a 27″ inseam.

Ironically, these have the smaller leg opening by measurement, but it appears they are a bit wider than the ones above. I double and triple checked, and I did match up the correct pictures, so I can’t really explain that.

These are made of a light summer-weight stretch denim, which is really nice for this time of year. They have a verrrry comfy, lived-in feel. I didn’t want to take them off. Definitely keeping!

They’re true to size; and they come in standard, plus, petite, and tall options. I’m wearing the 28 standard.

Madewell Classic Straight Full-Length in Fitzgerald Wash

hoodie // jeans

[flex_row][/flex_row]

So these are a classic full-length straight jean, and wow, this is some rigid denim. I’m not sure why we came so far with stretch denim, only to turn around and go back to 100% cotton. No thanks.

These jeans have 11 1/4″ high rise and a 13″ straight leg opening with a 31″ full-length inseam. When I get questions about what will be trending this fall, this is what I’m picturing. I see them on the younger, more trendy fashion bloggers, but I’m not sure if they’ll really hit the mainstream.

I didn’t have any idea what shoes to try with these, so I just photographed them barefoot, lol. Needless to say, they went back.

Madewell Cali Demi Boot in Bodney Wash

tee // jeans // sandals

[flex_row][/flex_row]

This is a demi boot, or what I usually call kick flares or crop flares. They have a 9 1/2″ mid rise and a 15 1/2″ kick out leg opening with a 26 1/2″ cropped inseam.

These are softer than the classic straight jeans, but not as soft as first two. They’re very tight in thighs but fine in waist — they’d probably will loosen up with wear, though. Madewell jeans tend to stretch out a bit. All that to say, they’re not quite as comfortable as I would like.

I prefer a higher rise, but otherwise, I like the fit of these and the rear pocket placement. They do come in petite and tall sizes, so if this length isn’t good for you, they should have one that is.

I didn’t keep these because I don’t need them; I know I’d reach for other similar styles first, but they’re good jeans if you’re looking for kick flares without a lot of distressing.

Madewell Full-Length Boot Cut in Firth Wash

tee // jeans // sandals

[flex_row][/flex_row]

These high-rise bootcut jeans give you legs for days! They have an 11″ high rise and a 17″ bootcut leg opening with a 31″ full-length inseam.

They have a bit of a vintage vibe — more 70’s than 90’s. I really hope these come back in style this fall. They’re so flattering, but definitely look best with a heel, and they have the inseam to match.

I love the faded light wash and ripped knee. They feel slightly rigid, but not in a bad way. They’re 99% cotton, so that explains it. All in all, I’m a fan. I kept these, and I’m excited to style them for summer and fall.

Madewell Jacquard Square-Neck Puff-Sleeve Top

top // jeans // sandals

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

Okay, so. This top really isn’t my style, but for whatever reason, I was drawn to it and thought I’d give it a try. It’s not terrible, but it’s kind of stiff and uncomfortable. The body is fine, but the sleeves are a little bit awkward.

This top also comes in red and black, and it runs true to size. If you like the style, it’s worth a try!

Madewell Embroidered-Sleeve Popover Midi Dress

dress // sandals

Speaking of things that aren’t really my style… ha! This dress doesn’t look quite as ridiculous as I expected it to, but it’s definitely a no bueno for me. If you’ve got that boho style, definitely try it. It’s cute, just not for me.

I will say, though, it isn’t very comfortable. It’s very stiff and scratchy. I couldn’t rip it off fast enough. So that’s something to be aware of. It comes in petite, plus, and standard sizes; I’m wearing the small.

LOFT Try-Ons

Alrighty, already! Moving on to LOFT! They’re 4th of July Sale is in full swing, and you get 60% off  your order if you purchase 3 or more items. (It’s 50% off 2 items, and 40% off 1.) Shipping is free on orders over $99, and the code is HBDUSA.

LOFT Firework Halter Cami

top // jeans // sandals

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

This top is really cute, perfect paired with blue jeans or denim shorts for the 4th. It also looks really fresh and pretty with white bottoms. It’s probably too late to get this for tomorrow, but LOFT does have the buy online, pick up in store option for those who have a store local to you.

It’s 100% rayon, so be aware of that — I wouldn’t want to put it through the dryer. And you do need a strapless bra with it, but it’s very comfortable and light and airy — perfect for hot weather. It’s TTS; I’m wearing a small.

LOFT Side Zip Kick Crop Pants

pants // top // sandals

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

If you need work wear pants, these are a great option. They’re really cute on, and very much on trend with the kick flare silhouette. They also come in petite and tall sizes, and there’s a curvy option as well. Not all come in white, though. Other color options include black, grey, and navy.

They have an elasticized waist with a side zip, for a smooth silhouette, and the are back welt pockets are made of a beige colored fabric so they’re not super visible. What IS super visible is my panty line. Ooops! Just say no to VPL!

I didn’t have the right undies on — I recommend something like these everyday shaping panties for under white pants. I got a pair years ago at the recommendation of a sales associate at Nordstrom, and they’re my go-to when I’m worried about my undies showing through white pants or jeans. Mine don’t have any control, I don’t think, but they have a rubbery panel around the leg opening to keep them in place. The undie-tectable brief is another option to try.

These pants run true to size; I’m wearing the 6 regular.

LOFT Hooded Sweater

hoodie // jeans

You can see more of this top above, but I just grabbed this one picture so I can give you the low-down real quick. I’m not a fan — it’s too thin, and the fabric is too scratchy. I just didn’t care for this, but it does come in a pretty green, and it’s also available in petite, if you’re interested.

LOFT Linen Dolman Tee

top // jeans // sandals

This top is one I shared in last week’s Try-On Haul in the white, and it was too see-through for my comfort level, but I love it in the black. I clearly need a black bra, but otherwise, it has a really nice lightweight linen texture. It’s very cool and comfortable, and I love the fit. As it says on the website, it follows your contours with a little room.

I wore this all day to travel on Thursday and then out to dinner that night, and it held up great. It’s 23″ long, so you can wear it untucked or front-tucked, and it runs true to size. I have the small.

Evereve Try-Ons

I just got my Evereve June selects, and this batch is really good. As I’ve mentioned, I’m an Evereve ambassador, so I get to pick out several outfits each month from their new arrivals in exchange for Instagram promotion.

Whoever curates their product lineup does an amazing job. They have such great styles, and some of my favorite brands. They’re also running a big July 4th Weekend Sale, where you can save up to 70% off clearance styles. The last I checked, the inventory was really good. I rounded up my favorite picks in my 4th of July Sales post, if you want to take a look.

Meanwhile, here are some of their new arrivals that I’m loving right now.

Summer State of Mind Tank & Saturday Skirt

tank c/o // skirt c/o // sandals c/o

I have this skirt in the grey and black stripe, but I’m really loving this camo version. For some reason, the fabric feels a little softer, and I like the more muted color palette. I have the size 2, for reference.

And this tee is also super cute, but it runs small. I’m wearing the small, but I could almost use a medium. Also, it’s cut pretty low under the arms, so be aware of that. I think it would be better suited to someone who is smaller chested than I am, but I do really like it. It’s really lightweight and soft and comfortable.

Linen French Terry Sweatshirt Tee

top c/o // pants c/o // sandals c/o

I love, love, LOVE this sweatshirt tee. The ultra-casual laidback vibe is right up my alley, and I ballet neck and raglan sleeves are really flattering. It has a double raw edge at the cuffs and hem, and the fabric is on the thicker side — very substantial. Not as soft as some, but very comfortable.

I’ve worn this a couple times already — it’s cute with white Bermuda shorts, blue jeans, and of course these black joggers. It’s TTS; I have the small.

Level99 Lara Utility Pant

top c/o // pants c/o // sandals c/o

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

These pants are really soft and comfortable. They have a 9 3/4″ rise with a 27″ inseam. They’re a stretchy twill with a satiny sheen, and the banded cuff with the size zip gives them that trendy jogger vibe. They’re also on sale for $79.99 (down from $128.)

I’m going to say these run true to size. I have the 28, and they seem a bit roomy in the waist, but they fit well everywhere else. You may recall, I had them in olive earlier in the season. I had the 28, thought they were too big, and exchanged for the 27. But when the 27 came, they were too much of a legging-like fit, so I sent them back.

All that to say, when I requested these, I asked for the 28, and I do think I like this fit the best.

Sanctuary Dolman Pullover

sweater c/o // shorts c/o // sandals c/o

This summer-weight sweater has a great beachy vibe, with the boatneck and subtle pink and tan die dye print. I love a good dolman sleeve, and the 23 1/2″ length is great for pairing with higher rise pants and shorts. You can front-tuck it, or you don’t have to.

It is dry clean only, though, so be aware of that. This sweater runs TTS; I have the small.

KUT from the Kloth Sophie Shorts

shorts c/o // sweater c/o // sandals c/o

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

KUT from the Kloth is really killing it with their denim lately. They’ve improved the look of their washes a lot, and their styles are right on trend.

This Sophie cut is a nice update to the Catherine boyfriend shorts I had last year. They have a 10″ rise with a 9″ un-cuffed inseam length and a slightly narrower leg opening. (The Catherine had a 9″ rise and a 8 1/2″ un-cuffed inseam.)

I chose to cuff mine for these pictures, but I like them un-cuffed as well. The 99% cotton/1% spandex has just enough stretch to be comfortable, and they fit true to size. I’m wearing the 6.

Freedom Moses Two Band Slides

slides c/o

I’m also really liking these slides. They’re lightweight and very comfortable, and the price is great. The straps are NOT adjustable, FYI, but they do have some give to them. I’m wearing the 7/8, for reference.

Everlane Try-Ons

I ordered a few pieces from Everlane. I haven’t been shopping here as much this summer, but I wanted to give their canvas sneakers a try, so I threw a few more things in my cart.

Everlane The Organic Cotton Cutaway Tank

tank // shorts // sneakers

This tank is really cute, and I love the golden hour/white stripe, but it runs really small. I could barely fit into it, so I’ll need to size up to a medium.

I love the cutaway curve around the shoulders — it’s very flattering, but it does require a racerback bra, or you can just get some of these bra clips. This tee comes in a bunch of other colors, and it’s only $20.

Everlane The Forever Sneaker

canvas sneakers

I’ve been wanting some canvas sneakers, and these are perfect. I love the retro styling, and they’re incredibly lightweight and comfortable. They have good padding and support, and I feel like I could walk in these all day. They’re pretty much the perfect summer sneaker.

Unfortunately, I need to exchange mine for the 8.5. I recommend sizing up half from your regular shoe and boot size.

The Canvas Basket Tote

tote // tank // shorts // sneakers

Canvas bags have a great summery vibe, and I love this sturdy tote with the basket shape. It’s really durable and comfortable to carry, and it will clearly hold a ton.

I went for the black, but it also comes in a linen color (called Natural), a light brown (Toasted Coconut) and a gorgeous blue (Aegean Blue.) Definitely keeping this one!

The Lightweight French Terry Crew

sweatshirt // shorts // sneakers

This pullover crew is just okay for me. It has a shrunken fit, which is kind of nice, especially with higher rise jeans and shorts, but I didn’t feel like it was especially flattering. Maybe it’s because I threw it on over the tank. I might like it better without anything under it.

It’s very lightweight and breathable, I dunno… I think I might give it another try before deciding whether or not to send it back. I wish I’d brought it to Maine. It’s very chilly here, and I could use a lightweight long-sleeve pullover like this.

This one runs true to size, or you could size up for a more relaxed fit.

Twill Shorts Try-Ons

Okay, home stretch! I put all the twill shorts together, even though some are from retailers already mentioned above. I figured it makes them easier to compare. I ordered some longer lengths, to see what I could find for those of you who prefer a 6″ or 7″ inseam.

Everlane The Cotton Twill Short

 shorts //  tank // sneakers

[flex_row][/flex_row]

Okay, so these aren’t longer; they have a 3″ inseam, although I don’t feel like they look quite that short. They don’t offer the rise measurement, and I didn’t measure before I left home, but they’re definitely high rise. I’m going to guess 11″.

They’re 95% cotton/5% elastane, so they have some stretch, but they feel pretty sturdy. The rear pockets are quite large, and I don’t care for the slight flare at the leg opening, but they’re not terrible. They come in several other colors, and you’ll want to size up if in between; I’m in the 8.

Old Navy Mid-Rise Twill Everyday Shorts for Women – 7-inch inseam

shorts // top (old) // sandals

These shorts seem like decent quality for the price, and they have a refined look about them. For $15, you really can’t beat them.

They’re 98% cotton/2%spandex, so they’re comfortable on, but they have enough cotton to maintain their shape. I do with the leg opening were slightly slimmer, but that’s a personal problem. They’ll probably fit most women just fine.

They run true to size, or size down if in between; I’m wearing the 6.

J.Crew 7″ Stretch Chino Short

shorts // tee // sandals

Sorry I don’t have more pictures, I was in a rush, trying to get ready to leave town. This pair is from J.Crew, and they’re very similar to the Old Navy pair, but the fabric does feel a little nicer.

I feel like they look a little bit better too, just a little more streamlined. They have a 9 3/4″ rise and a 7″ inseam, and they’re on sale for $39.50. They come in a myriad of colors, and I’m wearing the size 6, for reference.

LOFT High Rise Welt Pocket Denim Shorts in Indigo Stripe

shorts // tee // sandals

These are my least favorite pair of shorts from this bunch, which is no surprise. I never like LOFT shorts on me, lol.

They have a VERY high rise at 12 3/4″ and a 3 1/2″ inseam. So I guess I only ordered two pairs of longer shorts. I thought I ordered more. Anyway!

I’m not a big fan of these, but I wanted to share in case they appeal to someone else.

Nordstrom Try-Ons

Did I say we were in the home stretch? Ooops! I forgot about these Nordstrom try-ons. I just have a few…

Caslon Stripe Linen Blend Pants

pants // tee // sandals

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

Occasionally, I get requests for wide legged pants or more relaxed fits, and this right here is why I don’t wear them. I feel like I’m wearing pajamas.

They’re also ridiculously long, I’m not sure what’s up with that. They are cool and comfortable, though, so I suppose they could be hemmed if you like them. Or, if you wear them with a wedge sandal, they may look less like pajamas.

At any rate, I sent them back, but if you like them, they run true to size, or size down if in between. I’m in the small.

Zella Gwen Ponte Knit Romper

romper // sandals

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

This romper is actually really cute and comfortable too. You just pull it up and down, nothing to button or zip or futz with. It’s made of a pretty substantial fabric, so it holds its shape just fine.

I styled the crop version in this post, if you care to check it out. Both are true to size; I’m in the small.

Halogen Cap Sleeve Blouse

top // pants //  sandals

If you need a work wear top, this one comes in tons of prints, and it’s very easy to throw on with pants or tuck into a skirt. You can also wear it with jeans for a dressed-up casual date night look. It runs true to size; I have the small.

Halogen Plisse Top

top // pants //  sandals

And this was yet another attempt at providing some work wear options for those who need them. This is also great for those ladies who prefer not to show their arms.

It’s cute, but I feel like it could read matronly if not styled carefully. I like how it pairs with the side zip kick crop pants from LOFT and my Dolce Vita braided slides.

A modern pump would also be really chic, if you need a closed toe option. I love that eggshell leather.

WHBM Matte Jersey Tassel Tank in Desert Palms Amazon

top // pants // sandals

And finally, I ordered this jersey tassel tank from White House Black Market in the Desert Palms Amazon print a while back, and it was backordered and finally arrived. It’s a little bit loud; I might prefer it with a blazer over top so there’s not quite as much print going on.

Here’s how it looks with a front-tuck… much better! But still, it think a feminine black blazer like the J.Crew Going Out Blazer would really take this look up a notch.

And that’s a wrap! It’s hard to believe, but my next Try-On Haul will be now and later styles from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! The preview drops on Monday, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us this year. Haha, in store… get it?

Oh, boy. I’m getting punchy. Time to hang up the computer and dive into a good book.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and have a fabulous Fourth!

  1. I’ve been a subscriber for a while. I love your honest opinions! I shop at many of the same places and have a very similar body type, so this is so helpful! Thank you!

  2. Hi, great post. I wanted to read the comments but can’t find them (viewing online device). Can you add a link to read comments?.

  3. I’m glad that y’all are safe and sound in Maine. Boy, this was a huge try-on post where you shared so many styles and nice pieces with us. My absolute favorite is the Halogen Cap Sleeve Blouse. I hope that you kept it! Fortunately, it’s sunny with lower humidity down here in south central Georgia, so we will be able to have our big fireworks show down at our lake tonight, for the neighborhood. Four of us bought the $1,000.00 worth over in AL; this will be the biggest show we’ve ever done. Enjoy your day!

  4. Hope you are enjoying Maine and that the weather clears up for you!! My husband and I were in Lancaster and Longwood Gardens for the past two days and the weather was pure perfection (except for one rain storm while we were in Lititz! I know you were just there as well). I have an Evereve question. When are they coming to the Phila area? I see they are in Pittsburgh and north Jersey. They need to come to the Kof P Mall, don’t you agree??? Thanks for the Try On Haul, love seeing the different shorts especially.

  5. Glad you have arrived safe in Maine! If you love Lobster you really do need to come to the maritimes 😉loved your try ons I always like to see the hits and the misses! We’ve had a few cooler days with drizzle this weekend but looks like sunny skies again by Tuesday! Having a hot June has really spoiled us! Happy 4th of July weekend 🇺🇸

  6. I LOVE the Caslon linen drawstring pants on you! That outfit screams So CA summer style. I already have quite a few pairs of wide leg pants like them, but I’m ordering those anyway; so cute!
I’ve been disappointed with Halogen brand lately. I don’t get the “matronly” look/style and the fabric choices aren’t great either. I’ve been on an Evereve kick this year and find myself going to their website ALL the time. I agree with you that they have good buyers & stylists right now; lots of cute choices and a variety of good brands. I wish they had a brick and mortar store in California.

  7. Great post, thanks! One comment on 100% cotton jeans – I have no butt or hips. I’m basically a cylinder. I do own several pairs of Mother The Looker, but have to constantly pull them up if I’m not wearing a belt. For some reason, I prefer not wearing a belt, but hiking up my pants every few minutes is not a great look, so I wear a belt. I recently bought a few pairs of Agolde jeans in 100% cotton, and I love them! They are all high-waisted and stay on my body without a belt – so it works for some of us!

  8. So many good sales! I just bought the two Karen Scott hoops and set of sheets from pottery barn to try. Now I’m on the Evereve site loading the cart! Need to stop! Lol! Thanks for all the recommendations! Enjoy your trip!

  9. Good stuff!! On the twill shorts, are any of them more fitted at the waist? I have such an issue with gapping and have a hard time finding shorts that fit both my hips and waist

  10. I was just in a Madwell store today for the first time. We don’t live close to one. It’s soooo expensive. I saw a camera crossbody I loved and it came with extra strap but it was $148. Just too much for me to spend. I believe Cyndi has it and styled it. :). That was a long try on haul. 🙂 You work hard to put these together. So great to have all the measurements. I’m needing more jeans but just struggling with the change in styles. My skinnies are starting to feel dated but the others I just haven’t found what works. I’m shorter so the lengths are tricky. I hope the weather clears up for you. Enjoy. Happy 4 th to you.
