Trending This Fall: Brown Footwear and Accessories

** This post is sponsored by Nordstrom and Collective Voice. All selections, styling, and opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that support this site!

As fall finally arrives, I’m thrilled to see so many rich shades of brown in footwear and accessories in stores right now. While brown certainly isn’t a groundbreaking color choice for fall, it’s a welcome change from the taupe and beige tones that dominated the fashion scene for the past few years. It’s also a lovely complement to the darker denim and earthy greens that are also trending this season.

I set out early in the season to find some brown footwear to add to my wardrobe, and these chocolate brown suede knee boots were begging to be paired with skirts and dresses this fall. The architectural 2-inch heel and Western details play into the season’s trends, and they’re quite comfortable and easy to walk in, which is always a bonus!

Unfortunately, the brown suede that I’m wearing here is almost sold out, but I found some similar styles that I linked in the shopping widget at the end of the post.

I love how chocolate brown pairs with shades of green, and shades of green are everywhere this season! I recently picked up this short sleeve sweater dress in the Olive, which is perfect with my chocolate brown boots.

I actually had this dress last year in a teal, and I was so excited to see they brought it back this year. I love the seaming details and the flattering fit, plus the mock neck with short sleeves creates a nice element of juxtaposition. This dress is also available in black, and it runs verrrrry small. I am wearing the large, and I was sucking it all in.

With the resurgence of brown boots and shoes, it was time to find a brown handbag to add to my fall wardrobe, and this Madewell leather bucket tote is a great price point. I love the minimalist styling with the single buckle on the strap, and the way it’s structured on the bottom and a little bit slouchy on top. It’s a nice way to offset the more structured clothing and Western style boots.

I also styled this olive green dress with leopard print slingback pumps. If you aren’t a big fan of browns, leopard is a nice way to participate because it also incorporates black and shades of tan that you can pull from.

These slingbacks are really comfortable, and I love the dramatic pointy toe silhouette and low 2 1/2″ architectural heel. I did size up in these to accommodate the pointy toe; I’m wearing the 8.5.

I accessorized both of these looks with gold jewelry. This polished gold bangle with the wavy silhouette is one of my favorites. It would layer nicely with other gold pieces, but I usually just wear it alone. It’s such a nice quality piece.

And then I just wore simple gold hoops, and I decided to carry a lighter brown bag to coordinate with pumps. This bag is such a good price point, and it’s on sale.

Speaking of how well brown shoes and accessories complement shades of green and darker denim washes, I styled these Blondo waterproof boots with this military green jacket and these wide leg jeans.

Kut from the Kloth Amanda Boxy Twill Jacket (S) // AllSaints Stevie Cotton T-Shirt (M) // Hint of Blu Wide Leg Jeans (29) // Blondo Emmalyn Boots (8.5) // similar belt // JW PEI handbag // similar earrings // Tom Ford sunglasses (option)

I’ve shared these boots before, and I’m so happy they’re still in stock. They’re also on sale again! They’re very comfortable, and waterproof too. This cognac shade of brown is highly versatile, and it coordinates nicely with my PEI JW shoulder bag.

This KUT from the Kloth utility jacket is a really nice completer piece to add to your fall outfits. It has a nice structure to it, for a flattering fit, and a good bit of stretch, so it’s comfortable to wear all day. I’ve even traveled in it.

With this look, I also added a brown belt in a similar shade of cognac brown. It really finishes off the look nicely.

And these are a really good pair of wide leg jeans for under $100. This is the first time I’ve tried this brand, and I’m impressed. They have a good bit of stretch, and a trouser style hem in a slim wide leg silhouette.

This is the Lisbon Wash, which has some mild distressing, and they’re also available in a more polished dark wash called Madrid Blue.

  1. Love the chocolate brown, the shoes, the bag, the dress and accessories but I think the dress is a tad too small 🙁

    1. Haha Denise–that’s exactly what I was thinking! I have always worn green and brown, but I try not to pair them together due to the tree quality! Somehow a light taupe or tan doesn’t feel the same as the chocolate with the green…

  2. I absolutely love everything you are wearing in this post. The dress is simple, elegant and stunning. I’m going to purchase the Amanda jacket, but am stumped on which colour would look best on me – fair skin, blond hair, blue eyes. Brown or green? Can you give your opinion please? Is there a slightly less expensive tote you can recommend, the Madewell bag is out of budget for me. Thanks ++++ for your beautiful styling advice. I look forward to all of your posts!!

  3. I love all the brown leathers too ! I think brown has always been my fav, but went with black/taupe sooo much. Have fun with your decorating. It will help fill your time, look nice and be fun as you anticipate a full home again soon.

  4. I can wear cognac shoes with the colors I wear since my hair greyed but the darker chocolates don’t really go with my color clothing. I love the brown knee hi boots you are styling. The chocolate brown is beautiful.

  5. I ordered brown Boots last year for this season on clearance at Vionic and adore them! The dress is amazing on you! I got one similar too. Can’t wait to check out all the links!! I love brown. Thanks for helping us find fall clothes!

  6. I so remember the feeling of going by the high school that first Fall. Lots of memories flood in and you do miss it, but like you said the new change of pace you get use to. You’ll always miss the full house with activity, but there are new things to look forward too. Have fun decorating you house. I always decorate for Fall and Christmas and some at Easter. The older I get the less I put out, so not so much to put away. I’ve replaced so much of my Christmas decor and simplified it and its much nicer.

  7. I really like the warm colors trending right now. I saw an instagram post yesterday about how for so long people were escaping the dark colors of the early 2000s home decor (Tuscan style) and that we were avoiding wearing those browns and burgundy colors as well. Not anymore; people are craving a departure from all the nude and beige neutrals. I personally love green and brown. I’ve been on the search for a new green sweater and can’t find the shade I want. I ordered the roll neck JCrew sweater in moss green (waiting for it to arrive). Thank you for all your belt links. I ordered one from your link last week and got it yesterday (thin black belt from BR Factory). That has been a hole in my closet; replacing the larger ones that I don’t wear anymore.

  8. Chocolate brown is my black. I have had to search high and low throughout the years to have shoes and accessories in this color. It’s nice to see it on trend now. That means right now I can more easily source more items to add to my wardrobe. 🙂

      1. 🙂 Absolutely, for both chocolate brown and leopard, since they’re foundational to my wardrobe and are widely available right now.

  9. Fun post. Thanks. Love the Hint of Blu jeans and love them on you. Just a tiny bit of “slim” is so flattering. I think I best order.

I do have a brown shoe question. I want another pair of loafers…I think brown. And I’ve found a pair that fits my skinny feet. They have a small lug sole. I like the look, but do you think I will be sorry?

  10. Great outfits!! I love the green and brown together even though I read the looking like a tree comment I still think it’s great. I picked up a brown purse yesterday.

  11. The green dress and brown footwear looks great!
Do you have any Fall Wedding Guest dress suggestions? I’m going to one in early October for a family member and I’m stumped as to what to wear. It’s a semi formal, outdoor or indoor with dinner and dance in a country/barn venue.
    ( I’m mid 50’s, 5’2” and 140lb with curves)
    Help!
