Trend to Try: Field Sneakers

Happy Friday, friends, and cheers to the weekend! We have a fairly quiet one planned, for a change. I’ve got an old school outfit post for you today, and I’m styling one of my favorite footwear trends for fall.

J.Crew Field Sneaker (8h) // MOTHER Tomcat (29) // Evereve Bia Sleek Henley (M) // Lagos earrings

The J.Crew field sneaker has a similar style to the Adidas Samba, which has taken the fashion world by storm this year. It’s a low profile sneaker with a gum sole that’s characterized by its soft leather upper with suede overlays.

It comes in 4 colorways (I have the ivory/metallic) and it’s very soft inside. These sneakers have a decent amount of support, and I can see wearing them for long periods of time with no issues. They’re also 30% off this weekend.

Since this is a very casual shoe, I like them best with jeans and a casual top like this olive green long sleeve henley tee.

This top is a new addition to my closet, and it’s perfect for fall transition weather. The fabric is extremely soft and comfortable, and I like the subtle contrast of the satin trim on the button placket and the extra long cuffs.

I sized up to a medium for a little extra wiggle room, and if it shrinks up a bit, it should still fit just fine.

My MOTHER Tomcat jeans are a classic straight ankle jean in a medium indigo wash. I like how they sit just above the sneakers, so they don’t get caught on the top.

I got them last spring, so I’m linking to a similar wash. Mine have a 10 3/4″ rise and a 26″ inseam with a 14″ leg opening, for those who pay attention to such matters.

Even though this is intended to be a super casual look, it still needs a little something. I wish I’d taken time to add a simple pendant necklace and a light brown leather belt the color of the gum sole to tie it all together.

Otherwise, this is the perfect casual look for running errands or going to the kids’ sporting events this fall.

  1. I like those earrings a lot. Putting on my wishlist for when I have more extra money (have been on a bit of a spree lately.) The sneakers and overall outfit are also very cute. I just feel like I have personally been chronically underdressed for years now and am on a mission to level it up. I need to stay away from t-shirts and sneakers at the moment until I’m able to use them sparingly and responsibly lol!

    1. Kristin, I too have been underdressed for so many years…… not embracing my feel-good self., for several reasons.
Now Trying to play catch-up, and Jo-Lynne’s blog suggestions and fashion advice have helped me so much. It’s never too late to go for the best version of yourself. 🌞

  2. Have you tried Ecco Sport sneakers? Just purchased my first pair this week and wore them shopping yesterday. Great arch support and super cute!

  3. Can you style wide leg crops, either jeans or pants? Explain the perfect length? Can you show them with different shoes and tops? I’m struggling with this .

  4. Thank you for featuring these. I really really like the Adidas Sambas but for the life of me cannot figure the sizing on those (and that’s if I can even find a pair in stock). I think I will be getting these J Crew ones 🙂

  5. Great outfit for my very casual lifestyle. I’m going to look for similar sneakers with the gum sole that has good arch support.

  6. I like these sneakers so much better than the ones I got from JCrew last year. I grabbed mine when they were only $40, but wore them once as they were to heavy looking and the JCREW on the back heel I don’t like. Mine are like the second one you show in your shopping widget. I like your more stream line ones you are wearing. Great casual outfit for Fall.

  7. PS. I’d like to see a post on Christmas ideas for young adult kids in their 30-40’s. I’m lost for ideas this year for my guy and gal kids and their spouses. The grands are easy. Lol. I know it’s earlier, but I start my shopping by Oct 1 st to be mostly done by Thanksgiving and be able to find what I’m looking for.

    1. Hi Kathy! Idk if this helps but I’m 36 and my mom has the same struggle! I’d rather pick out my own clothes, accessories, and even home decor items. She usually buys me gift cards to a couple of my favorite stores. I actually love this because it lets me spend more than I normally would justify and I get to pick out what I want. I also make a list of functional things I need for my house (this year I’m asking for new linens). Amazon also has a wish list function if you want them to make you a list. But I’m sure they’ll love anything you buy!

  8. I have been eyeing those Lagos earrings and some that are similar so I put them in my wish list, never splurge on myself for jewelry. I wear my hair in a pixie now and always wear my diamond studs, I like the huggie type. In fact I sold a couple pair of my yellow gold hoops couple of years ago because they were a little larger than I would wear now and really like silver better with my cool skin tone but these are a good choice with the silver/gold. Very cute!

  9. Ohhh, I love the look of gum sole tennis shoes. Do you remember when wearing mens wrestling shoes were a trend in the 80’s? I think I wore them with my super pegged jeans 🙂 and “mall bangs”. I am SOOO thankful big hair isn’t a trend again. Cheers!

    1. I remember, Katie! I wore my wrestling shoes with slouch socks and a mini skirt. My son found a pic of this when he was a teenager and told me, “Oh, I’m so humiliated!” He was joking, of course!

  10. I would love a post on rainy day wear, particularly what is current in rain boots.
Another post idea is completer pieces, whether it is a jacket, belt or jewelry. I love a look with jackets, but for at least a third of the year it is too hot for a jacket.
Overall I love your posts and look forward to reading them every morning!

    1. I agree, a post on rainy day wear would be amazing. Especially since I find this a conundrum re: shoes now that we’re not all wearing skinny jeans anymore.

  11. This is off topic but do you know what to Cyndi’s blog? I didn’t get her email and when I went to her website it was gone. I know you’re her friend Jo-Lynn so I hope you don’t mind me asking. I don’t have her email.

    1. Terri, Cyndi’s blog seems fine, just looked at it a few minutes ago (1pm on Friday) and she posted on Instagram just 2 hours with some fashion ideas from Loft, Nordstroms and Walmart.

  12. Jo-Lynne, I always struggle with adding accessories to an outfit. Thank you for stating what accessories you would have added to this outfit to level it up. So very helpful! Have a wonderful weekend.

  13. What’s your thoughts on the Lady Jacket? I’m seeing it all over instagram but on the younger ( then me) bloggers! Will you be styling one?
    Love your look today!
    Happy weekend

  14. Am I the only one that is so over ankle/crop jeans. Not only are they not practical for winter, I also don’t like the way they look anymore.

  15. Great outfit inspiration, especially love the top. I enjoy your blog daily and I try and copy or apply your fashion advice to my lifestyle and budget. I have 2 off topic questions. I purchased a pair of full length coated denim (slim leg) from Chico’s last winter, are those still in fashion? If so what type of tops do you suggest. I’m 5”4’ and wear a size 10/12. Also I recently purchased a pair of wide-leg ankle denim from Kohl’s (ecru color). What type of shoes do you recommend to wear with them, I have a pair of fashion sneakers and a pair of open toe wedge sandals that I was hoping might work as I’m not a heel wearing person. Also does a more fitted top look best with them and/or a cropped jacket. I appreciate your help!
