Happy October, friends! And happy Wednesday! That means it’s time for another What I Wore Lately, my every-other-week roundup of daily outfits. This one is all about what I wore during our trip to Iceland, Scotland, and London last month. (And I promise—this will be the last post about that trip!)

We were gone for over two weeks, so this one’s a doozie, but I think it’s fun (and hopefully helpful!) to see how my travel capsule wardrobes actually worked out in real life.
If you missed them, I already shared our His and Hers Iceland Packing List and What I Packed for Scotland/London, so you can see everything that went into my {very large} suitcase. Today’s post is all about how those pieces came together in actual outfits, what we did each day, and how well it held up throughout the trip.
Travel Outfit
For our travel day, I wore the Blondo Chelsea boots because they were the heaviest, bulkiest pair of shoes I was bringing. I paired them with my grey jeans and my favorite black travel cardigan, layered over a striped tank in case I got warm and wanted to remove the sweater.
Packing tip: Wear your heaviest or bulkiest shoes (and coat) on the plane to save space in your luggage. I did pack my coat this time, but I sandwiched it between the two sides of my suitcase so I could easily grab it when we landed in Iceland.

This ridiculously large CALPAK suitcase wasn’t completely full at the start, but I definitely couldn’t fit everything I wanted to bring into my usual AWAY The Medium, so it was necessary. (By the end of the trip, I had expanded it and still had to sit on it to get it closed—so bringing it was definitely the right decision!)
I changed into my SPANX wide-leg pants at the Newark airport just before takeoff so I’d be more comfortable on the overnight flight, and we snapped this picture shortly after arriving at the Iceland airport the next morning. I don’t love how they look with the boots, but it is what it is! (The AWAY Bigger Carry-On Flex was Paul’s suitcase for this trip. He kindly wrangled my giant CALPAK, so I was happy to roll his, and I like how my backpack fits neatly on the handle. Also, I tucked my purse inside my backpack for boarding.)

🇮🇸 What I Wore in Iceland
Once we got settled into our hotel in Reykjavik, I changed back into my grey jeans and we headed out to explore the city, including a food tour later that afternoon. I picked up a grey cashmere headband at a local shop—it was windy and my ears were cold, so it was the perfect solution.

We went back to the hotel for a bit to relax after the food tour, and then we headed back out again to catch some live music (and to try to stay awake a few more hours). I changed into my new Icelandic sweater, which I had purchased earlier that day.

And I swapped the boots for my VEJA sneakers to give my feet a break. They have black accents, which work really well with the black coat and bag.

The next morning, we met our guide for the next few days and set out on a road trip along the south coast of Iceland. I wore hiking pants over thermal leggings with a Smartwool base layer and a lightweight puffer vest. I packed my waterproof Gore-Tex jacket and rain pants just in case… and sure enough, I needed them! At the first stop, I only needed the jacket.

my outfit: Outdoor Research Aspire 3L Jacket in Ligonberry (L) // Smartwool crewneck in Currant Heather (M) // Patagonia Nano Puff Vest (L) // KUHL Freeflex Dash in Koal (M) // Buck Naked thermal leggings (M) // Merrell Moab Speed 2 in Charcoal (9) // knit hat (purchased in Reykjavik)
Paul’s outfit: Icewear jacket (purchased in Reykjavik) (M) // Smartwool in Olive (M) // Patagonia Nano Puff in Black (L) // KUHL Renegade Rock Pants in Ink Black /// Smartwool base layer bottoms (L) // Danner hiking sneakers (12)
But later on, when we hiked up a glacier to an ice cave, I definitely needed both the pants and the jacket!

We would take off the waterproof outer layers every time we got back in the car and put them on again for each short excursion. It was a bit of effort, but our guide did the same, so we just followed her lead. And I have to say—as wet, cold, and windy as it got, I stayed warm and dry!

When we got to our next hotel that night, I had Paul take this quick pic of what I was wearing under all of those outer layers.

I changed back into the black cardigan and grey jeans for dinner (we ate at the hotel), and I wore my ballet flats to give my feet a break from all of the clunky shoes I’d been wearing.

The next day, I pulled on the same hiking pants, base layer, and puffer vest for another day of outdoor excursions in Vik’s crazy weather. (See more about our day-to-day events in my Iceland Trip Recap.)

We explored the famous Glacier Lagoon that afternoon before checking into our next hotel—the Glacier Lagoon Hotel, where we would stay for the next two nights.

I was starting to feel bored wearing basically the same outdoorsy outfit, so the next day I pulled out my Athleta fleece-lined bootcut pants (similar here) for the hike we had planned—although I quickly realized that was a dumb move. I had bought legit hiking pants, and of all days, this was the one to wear them. (On a hike!)

Patagonia Nano Puff Vest in Black (L) // Smartwool Active Ultralite Short Sleeve in Twilight Blue // Columbia Benton Springs Full Zip in Charcoal Heather (M) // Athleta fleece lined pants (similar: Athleta Glacier bootcut pants (M) // Merrell Moab Speed 2 in Charcoal (9)
The bootcut pants were fine, but I had to be careful not to catch the hem on my clunky hiking sneakers. And once I started working up a sweat, the fleece lining felt way too warm. The KUHL hiking pants definitely would have been the smarter choice—but hey, live and learn!
At least I was smart enough to wear my short-sleeve Smartwool crewneck base layer, since I ended up shedding both the fleece and the vest. In fact, I never wore the vest on the hike at all—I just left it in the car.

After that, we went back to the Glacier Lagoon for lunch from the food trucks and to see how the icebergs had shifted in just 24 hours—which was pretty amazing. I was glad to have my fleece at that point. This was one of my favorite spots of the whole trip; I could have stood there for hours just watching it change.

For dinner that night at our hotel, I pulled out another sweater to pair with my black jeans and ballet flats.

The next day, we checked out of The Glacier Lagoon Hotel and began our road trip back to Reykjavik, with a stop along the way to tour the Caves of Hella. I went back to my trusty Smartwool base layer and quilted vest with hiking pants over thermal base layer and Merrell hiking sneakers, plus the rain coat and fleece in my backpack, just in case.

Back in Reykjavik, we checked into our hotel, and I happily changed into a sweater with jeans and boots for more city exploring and dinner.

And the next day, it was off to the airport for a short flight to Scotland! I just repeated the same outfit so I didn’t have to dig too far into my suitcase.

🏴 What I Wore in Scotland
We flew into Glasgow and drove straight to Edinburgh. Once we arrived at our hotel, we rested for a bit, then I curled my hair and changed into this striped cardigan for a little something different before heading out to explore the city.

Later that evening, I wore the same outfit to dinner at the hotel but swapped the shoes for ballet flats to give my feet a break.

The next day, we had a walking tour of Royal Edinburgh. I wore the same black jeans—honestly, they were the only pair I really needed on this trip, though I was definitely sick of them by the end! This time I paired them with sneakers and finally broke out that beige trench to change things up a bit.

That afternoon, I changed into my ballet flats for high tea at our hotel. I was a little worried I might not be dressed up enough, but everyone was actually pretty casual. (Pardon the dirty mirror…)

We came back to our room to rest before The Whisky Experience that evening. Since it was getting chilly and we had a bit of a walk, I changed into boots and added my plaid scarf. I didn’t love how it looked with the beige trench, so I switched back to the black one.

The next day, this kind gentleman at The Balmoral agreed to a photo as we said our good-byes. (I’m sure it wasn’t the first time… lol!).
I wore a similar look for traveling to our next destination, but with a short-sleeve grey sweater underneath. It was sunny, and by then I was getting a little tired of my long-sleeved sweaters. Fortunately, we were in and out of the car most of the day, and I stayed warm enough with my coat on.

After checking into our new hotel that evening, I just kept the same outfit on for dinner.

Our guide told us to dress for hiking the next day, so I pulled out some of my activewear from Iceland to explore Glencoe and other parts of the Highlands. We didn’t make it back to the hotel before dinner in Oban, so I just wore the same outfit to the restaurant. Everything is so casual in Scotland that I didn’t feel out of place at all.

The following day, I was back in my grey jeans and ivory sweater with my trusty Chelsea boots for the drive up to see Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle. Once again, I kept on the same outfit to go to dinner later that evening in Oban.

We packed up the next morning to head back to Glasgow. Since I knew we’d be spending the afternoon in the city, I wore my VEJA sneakers and pulled out my blue jeans for the first time on the trip. It felt so good to wear something other than grey or black!

Rails Geneva (S) // PAIGE Anessa (29) // VEJA Esplar (39) // similar London Fog Hooded Raincoat (S)
After exploring the city, we checked into our hotel for the night. We had dinner reservations at an upscale Indian restaurant, so after a short rest, I swapped the blue jeans and sneakers for black jeans and we set out again. Since we wanted to walk and see more of the city, I chose my black boots over the ballet flats and just hoped the restaurant wasn’t too dressy.

I also forgot to tell Paul to put on a nicer shirt, so we both felt a little underdressed. Glasgow definitely has a different vibe than Oban, but it is what it is… you do the best you can when you’re traveling!

The next day, it was on to London! We took the train, so we tried to consolidate our luggage as best we could. By then I had collected quite a few gifts and souvenirs, but we still managed without breaking out the extra duffle I’d brought, or even expanding our suitcases.

🇬🇧 What I Wore in London
Arriving in London felt a bit like coming “home.” I was so happy to be in a familiar place, and to be staying put for the entire trip. After checking into our hotel for the next four nights, I changed and then we set out to explore the neighborhood.
I didn’t really need to change, since I basically ended up in a similar outfit formula—short-sleeve cashmere sweater and jeans—but I was so excited to get out of those boots and into some fun shoes. It was a bit of a risk wearing ballet flats, since we didn’t know how long we’d be out, but as it turns out, my feet were very happy. It’s good to know I have a pair of cute shoes I can walk miles in!

similar London Fog Hooded Raincoat (S) // cashmere sweater vest (S) // PAIGE Anessa (29) // Dolce Vita Roslyn (8.5) // Nili Lotan belt (M) // Clare V. crossbody in Black/Chocolate // Anna Beck necklace
I also pulled out my Clare V. crossbody for the first time. I’d packed it specifically to bring in some brown tones, but it also has black in it, so it works with both.

For church the next day and Sunday Roast at Berners Tavern, I went back to my trusty v-neck sweater and black jeans with boots. Since I knew we’d be doing a lot of walking, the boots seemed like the most practical choice.

Jenni Kayne Flynn in Shadow (S) // MOTHER Dazzler (30) // similar booties // lululemon Rain Rebel (10) // Clare V. crossbody in Black/Chocolate
I went back to the wide leg blue jeans and chocolate brown sweater vest and beige trench for our Royal Walk tour the next day, but this time I opted for sneakers since we’d be doing so much walking.

London Fog trench (S) // cashmere sweater vest (S) // PAIGE Anessa (29) // VEJA Esplar (39) // Clare V. crossbody in Black/Chocolate // Anna Beck necklace // YSL sunnies
That night, I changed again for Hamilton. There’s always such a wide range of dress codes at the theater, so I didn’t worry about being too dressed up. I went with black jeans, a black sweater, and ballet flats, and to finish it off, I added a necklace and some bolder earrings.

Funny, I feel like I wore this black sweater so much more than the photos show… I often threw it on in the mornings with my SPANX wide leg pants to go to breakfast and do some computer work before getting dressed for the day, so I think that’s why I felt like I wore it all the time. I topped it all off with my trench coat for contrast.

J.Crew cashmere cardigan (S) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood (30) // Margaux The Demi Flat in Black (8.5) // similar London Fog Hooded Raincoat (S) // Jenny Bird hoops // Anna Beck necklace // similar black crossbody
The next day was another full one with lots of walking—touring the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. With sunny skies and mild temperatures, I took the opportunity to wear one of the short-sleeve tops I’d packed. (I definitely brought more than I needed, as it turned out.)
I actually prefer this green top with the black jeans, but I’d worn them so much, I opted for the grey instead. And sadly, the green is sold out (it’s from last fall), but they just brought it out in this gorgeous shade of blue! (I bought that one last night at EVEREVE.)

For dinner that night, I changed into black jeans and ballet flats, and swapped the black coat for the beige. It was a pretty fancy spot (Muse by Tom Aikens), and I definitely felt a little underdressed. I had actually packed a black dress and leopard pumps with this dinner in mind, and they would have been more appropriate—but since we wanted to walk around beforehand, I went with this instead. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked.

To travel home, I went back to my original travel outfit, but swapped the boots for sneakers. Once again, I’m surprised how little this sweater showed up in photos, because I felt like I wore it so much. I guess it was mostly around the hotels in the mornings or when we were relaxing between events.
It’s so comfy and works with all my denim options, as well as my SPANX wide-leg pants. It can be dressed up for an evening at the theater or tossed on with lounge pants or pajamas—definitely a true MVP, even if it didn’t make many appearances in the pictures.

Looking back, I probably could’ve packed fewer pieces, but hey—live and learn! I really ended up with three mini capsule wardrobes for this trip. There was some overlap, especially in outerwear and footwear, but I still had to think in terms of three different wardrobes, which made packing minimally almost impossible. Given that, I feel like my travel capsule worked out really well overall. I never felt like I was missing anything, and I was glad to have plenty of options that felt both practical and polished.

Thank you for sharing, I love all of your outfits and the Icelandic sweater is so nice, love the grey color! We arrived home from London last night. We had a great trip. I saw lots of wide leg pants (mainly jeans) with sneakers or trainers as they say in London. I had hoped to pop in a shop and try some on for fun, but never had time as we were so busy. We stay at the Double Tree near Kensington Gardens/Palace and liked our location with the ability to walk to Buckingham and British Natural Science Museum along with other sights; rode the tube for other points of interest. Now, I am trying to get back on schedule after the time change and jet lag-sigh!
Yes, I also noticed it was all wide leg jeans and sneakers in London. I was wishing I had a wide leg black pair, and also some brown sneakers.
I wish I had tried on a pair of wide leg while there–looked so fun and stylish; I am thinking about ordering the Wit and Wisdom wide leg jean you mentioned.
Thanks for sharing these. You usually share your MVP of clothing/shoes but I didn’t see that mentioned. With this long trip, what was the one or two things you will never travel without again when travelling outside of the US? What would you have left at home?
Funny, I almost added that at the end, and I decided the post was long enough. You can probably see the clothes I wore over and over. I would definitely say the two coats, Chelsea boots, VEJA sneakers, black jeans, and that black J.Crew cardigan were the MVPs of the Scotland/London portions of the trip. Although there were so many wide leg jeans in London, I was wishing I had a black denim option that was a bit more trendy. For Iceland, I did not need two Smartwool base layers or the 2nd pair of black pants, but I needed pretty much everything else.
I really enjoy the trip recaps and believe me, I won’t be mad if you think of one more to do! haha I do have a question, how on earth do you do the long haul flights in your clunkiest shoes? I’ve tried and I have to be able to slip my shoes off and on, but I do wear compression socks.
It’s not ideal, and honestly, they would have fit on the way over. I did have extra room in that suitcase, so I’m not sure why I didn’t swap them out for the sneakers. I do take them off on the plane, though. I bring socks.
I followed your capsule wardrobes with interest to file it away for “someday” as our weather here in the hills of Malibu, CA were in the 80’s and 90’s! However in a last minute planning spree to use up expiring miles, we are now headed to London for a Cunard sailing to Norway to view the Northern lights in November and your capsule has taken on new meaning! Was the beige trench warm/waterproof enough and would you recommend heavier fur lined boots in my case? What about gloves/hats? I’d welcome any suggestions! Also the ship has 2 formal nights so I need that end covered too, so glad you mentioned the Cal Pak suitcase, any tips appreciated for getting it all in, especially since we gave all our ski/outerwear away when we downsized. Thank you for all your posts on varied trip packing needs!
Wow, how exciting! I’ve never been in November, but I would think you will need a true winter coat and boots in Norway, and yes, gloves and hats for sure. I don’t think the trench will be warm enough. Helly Hensen makes a nice looking insulated rain coat that might work. I have a shorter one, but I didn’t bring it b/c I was afraid it would be too warm for September.
Wow what a fantastic post. I truly enjoy reading all about your trips and what you wore and why. It looks like you had so much fun and makes me want to go to Iceland! Your new sweater was beautiful.
Also how do you know what to buy like in Iceland or Scotland- did your guide offer suggestions or was that your internet search? I never know where to get “true” items made when in Europe.
Why did Paul buy the new coat? Was the one he packed not adequate?
Thank you again and hopefully you can rest and relax.
Sometimes it’s easy to tell, but I do often ask my guides when I have the chance.
Paul hadn’t brought a puffer coat, and he didn’t like the fleece he got at the last minute at L.L.Bean, so when we were in the Icewear shop and we saw how nice their gear was, he picked up a few things.
A friend had told me that the best place to buy clothes for Iceland is in Iceland, and she was totally right. The Icewear shops were everywhere, and I could have saved myself a lot of angst if I had just waited to shop in Reykjavik. If I were to do it again knowing what I know now, I’d plan an extra day there, leave room in my suitcase, and buy all the gear right there.
I think your outfits worked out so well! Thanks for sharing your trip with us; it’s been fun to read about each part. As a chronic over packer, I totally get bringing along other things, just in case. And, it is nice to have shoe options b/c our feet need a break from the same ones over and over.
I have a request: if you come across some straighter leg grey jeans, similar to your Mothers, but at a lower price point, would you mind sharing them? I think that color could be so versatile with my own wardrobe. Thank you!
I’ll keep an eye out for grey jeans. Overpacking makes packing and repacking really hectic, so I really want to try to pare down better next time. This trip was just such a challenge with all three destinations.
Your trip looked like a dream ! Thanks for sharing!
Great post. I almost feel like I need to plan a trip to Iceland right away so I can take advantage of all of your hard work finding the right gear!!! Looks like a wonderful trip.
It was great! I was dreaming last night that we went back and explored the north shore, lol.
This was a wonderful recap. Even though I followed along each day, it’s great having all the outfits in one place. I have said this before, the red coat and longsleeved crimson top are my favorites. My son bought me an adorable knit beanie when he was in Iceland a few years and I double-checked the label. It was from Icewear!! I can’t wait to see the Scottish plaid scarves you bought. I hope you share them us!
Yeah, Icewear was EVERYWHERE. It’s legit. I will definitely share my scarves!
Enjoyed seeing all your outfits that you wore! So…it looks like you depend on your Veja esplar sneakers alot. They do indeed look cute–I might of asked b4–but I’m on the fence–do you find them comfortable with some support? And did you go down a half size, like they seem to suggest. Also, I noticed in one pic, your dark maroon nails–can I ask the color name and product? Did they last the whole trip with no chips?
My polish ALMOST lasted – one nail chipped. I cut it down and filed it but it did look a bit janky for the last few days. I forget what color it is, I know it’s the OPI gel.
I love the VEJAs but they aren’t the most supportive. I just feel like they look good with everything, and they are comfortable and well worn in at this point. I wear the 39, which is what I almost always wear in EU sizes.
Wow!!!! Great thorough post. My friend just gave me a $50 gift card to Evereve for my bday so looking forward to spending that.
FUN!
Great photos! I was definitely wondering how you packed enough to wear to all of your destinations. I always over pack. You looked great, as always.
Absolutely loved this recap! Seemed like you made the most out of everything you packed. I too love the sweater you chose in Iceland. It’s so beautiful and the colors are perfect. I hope you’ll feature it in your what I wore series this winter.
I had to order a few things from Loft that you highlighted! I noticed they have leggings, the kind with stirrups? Only available online tho. Ick. I wore those NY&Co or Casual Corner in the 80s…yes I’m a senior citizen!! lol
Yeah, been there, done that!
Thank you for all the amazing info! I’m headed to London next week and then on to Italy. I am wondering, did you feel like the rain coat and trench coat were warm enough for you? (I’m from Colorado so damper climates make me get so chilled!). Thank you!!
I was plenty warm, with a cashmere sweater underneath. Our temps were lows in the low 50s and highs in the mid-60s.
Thank you for the Veja and the nail polish infor. I just came across the Veja V-90 online and I see it has holes for ventilation and is getting reviews saying its comfortable and supportive. You are so lucky your Vejas are broken in!
Yeah, my daughter has those. She loves them.
Agree with everyone else that I’ve enjoyed living vicariously through you on this trip, thanks for taking us along for the ride! Also I laughed at the mirror selfie with Paul waiting patiently in the background. Judging by his smile, he seems to take in stride better than some men!
