Extend Your Winter Wardrobe: Two Ways to Wear a Taupe Moto

This is an odd time of year to dress for… and definitely an odd time of year to shop for! I think we’re all ready for spring, but many of us have quite a few weeks (months?) left of winter weather.

Let’s talk about how to extend that winter wardrobe and get more wear out of some of our favorite closet staples before it’s time to pack them away (or move them to the back of your closet) for the season.

Today I’m styling two looks with my taupe suede moto, but the point of this post is really to shop our closets and get more wear out of some of those lesser worn wardrobe staples. If you don’t have a taupe suede jacket, maybe you have another color or fabric that would work with these looks.

This jacket hasn’t had a lot of airtime recently, and I guess I tend to wear it more in the fall, but it’s also a great piece to pull out again now that we’re headed towards spring.

When you have one of those random days when the temperatures rise and you don’t really need a full-on coat, try layering a suede (or leather) jacket over a winter sweater with your jeans and boots.

Lighter colors will always look more spring-appropriate, and I love how taupe pairs with oatmeal and ivory.

This Halogen cashmere v-neck in the oatmeal has been one of my go-to closet staples this winter. It goes with practically everything, but it with the taupe suede moto is a match made in heaven.

I’ve worn them together with off-black jeans and pumps for date night, but they also look great paired with light wash jeans and high top sneakers for a more casual vibe.

These jeans finally went on sale again! I snagged them last spring when they were on a deep discount, and I’ve worn them so much. Mine are a slightly different wash, but the exact same brand and style. There are a few more sizes at Saks, also marked down.

I showed these sneakers with the shacket outfit last week, and there are still a lot of sizes and color options left. This is the cloud suede.

I love the faux fur lining and contrasting laces, and they’re very comfortable too. I have my usual size 8, but I could have gone down a half size. I didn’t want to bother returning them, so I just wear thick socks, and they fit fine.

I’ve been wearing my diamond pendant and silver studs or silver hoops so much lately, and they do go with everything, but I wanted to change my jewelry up a bit for this look.

I like how this Kendra Scott layered necklace fills the neckline of a v-neck sweater, and these Paxton hoops are more like a drop earring; the small scale works really well with the necklace.

I also picked up this taupe shoulder bag recently. It’s the perfect size for everyday and right on trend. Plus, the color is the perfect neutral for all your spring and summer looks. Of course, it went and sold out too… ‘Tis the season!

I’ve had some requests for a spring handbag post, so I plan to get that updated soon.

For my second look, I styled this taupe moto jacket with an all black outfit. This is actually the same base outfit as the one I shared on Monday with the Amazon teddy coat.

To form the base for this outfit, I paired my black Halogen cashmere turtleneck with my black AG Farrah skinny ankle jeans, and I wore these Marc Fisher hiker boots.

It’s definitely a heavier, more wintry vibe for this time of year, but I feel like it works with my overall style aesthetic. That said, I would prefer a sleeker boot.

I actually think my new Vince Cabria lace-up boots that I styled yesterday with the grey cashmere zip-up hoodie would be perfect.

I do love these boots, though. They’re great quality and very comfortable. I just think they look better with a heavier coat, mainly because of that shearling trim.

For my bag, I carried a black crossbody with this look. It’s a bit sleeker than a shoulder bag and lighter than a tote — perfect for a day at the mall or tromping around Philly. We keep saying we want to get back down to the Art Museum… maybe when it warms up next week.

And I wore my Kendra Scott Paxton hoops again with this look, but I didn’t bother with a necklace.

I did, however, add my black sunglasses. I love how they complement a black turtleneck.

Just remember, the jacket in this outfit doesn’t have to be taupe. Any color, even black, layers beautifully over an all black outfit like this one.

Both of these outfits are perfect for shopping or errands, meeting a friend for coffee, or any of your daily activities. Or you could easily swap out the boots for pumps in either outfit for a date night look.

Either way, I can’t wait to start wearing my jackets once the weather warms up a bit. I’m getting tired of wool and puffer coats.

  1. Beautiful looks that I can easily copy with items I already have!  I’m looking forward to the new blog design…congrats on the “reno”!

  2. These looks are classic Jo-Lynne looks, and favorite types of late winter outfits for me. I received the boots from the first look yesterday. So, so cute!  Beware the sole has no arch support, but I think my inserts will fit. I wear a 7 in most boots and athletic shoes, and these fit fine in a 7.
We woke up to more snow falling (groaning).  We had about 10 inches Monday and Tuesday, and so far have about 2 inches this morning, but it’s still falling. We have to clear a path for our mini dachshund and it looks like he is walking through a tunnel. You can tell he is not happy with his limited yard use.  Your outfits remind me that Spring is coming!  Can’t wait to pull my suede Moto out again.

  3. Great post!  Love all these looks. Question on the wedgie icon-i’ve been thinking of ordering these ever since your try on haul.
Are they a hard denim like Levis used to be? I see there is only one percent of elastane & wonder if there’s any softness to them. Thanks!

  4. WOW…U have really stepped it up! love the new website! Have followed for years, and it just keeps getting better 🤩

  5. These are two terrific looks with the moto jacket. It’s a formula that we can follow easily with similar items from our closet. I’m liking the new blog design – very sleek looking graphics!

  6. LOVE THE NEW LAYOUT! CLEAN AND PRISTINE! THE ONLY ANNOYING THING, AND IT’S NOT JUST YOURS, IS THE SUBSCRIBE BOX THAT APPEARS EVERY TIME WE GO TO THE HOME PAGE. I WISH THEY COULD BUILD AN ALGORITHM THAT RECOGNIZES THOSE WHO HOP OVER FROM THE EMAIL. THAT WOULD BE COOL. CUTE OUTFIT. I LOVE THOSE TYPES OF HANDBAGS BUT I FIND THE STRAPS CUMBERSOME; ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTER WITH BULKY COATS. I’M IN NORTHERN PA (LAKE ERIE SHORES) AND IT’S A BIT BRUTAL WITHOUT A DECENT COAT!

  7. The new website loOks tErrific! Very streamlined. Not sure why, i can only post a comment in all caps though. (I’m using an Ipad.)

  8. I CAN ONLY POST IN CAPS, TOO. USING A LAPTOP. ANYWHO– I LOVE THE NEW FORMAT. IT’S VERY CLEAN AND BRIGHT. AND GREAT OUTFIT HERE. I LIKE THE “SHOP YOUR CLOSET IDEA” FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. SUGGESTION FOR A POST/POSTS- OUTFITS USING THE ZIP CASHMERE SWEATER YOU FEATURED. I CAN’T DECIDE IF I SHOULD ORDER THE BLACK OR GRAY. I FEEL LIKE I MIGHT USE THE BLACK MORE OFTEN BUT THE GRAY IS MORE APPROPRIATE FOR FALL AND SPRING. I LIKE THE IDEA OF WEARING IT WHEN THE WEATHER IS TRANSITIONING. OR i’m JUST TIRED OF BLACK!

  9. Love both outfits and how you look wearing them! The new blog design looks great. I did Have to update my profile and preferences to read the post. Tech, there is some funky going on BECAUSE adds on the right side are Popping up, blocking the comment box, so that i cant see EVERYTHING i am typing.

  10. I’m currently reading this on my desktop computer. The blog looks great! I will test out how many times the subscription box pops up, but so far it did both times I got on. I just got my Marc Fisher sneaker boots in the Cloud Suede today and LOVE them! Thank you so much for featuring them! I am going to return them for a size bigger, though, and I just reordered. I need to put my arch support in them, and there isn’t much wiggle room or room for thicker socks. Can’t wait to start wearing them! Love both these looks!
