Maine Vacation: Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory

Today we took a trip to Fort Knox and the new Penobscot Narrows Bridge.  For the past several years, we have watched the progress on this amazing new bridge, and earlier this year the construction was finally completed.

There is an observatory in one of the pylons, which are designed to resemble the Washington Monument, and I’ve been dying to ride up and see the view.  And for a bit of trivia, this is one of only three bridge observatories in the world.

Here is a picture of our view from the ground.

And from the top.

Here’s a view of the bridge from afar. Super cool, yes????

We also spent some time at Fort Knox. D liked looking out the windows.

And this is the view of the little town of Bucksport across the Penobscot River from Fort Knox.  You can see one of the canons in the very bottom of the picture.

Yes, I was there too.

We managed to make Tim Horton’s on our way home so I could try one of their sour cream glazed donuts that Jennifer recommended in the comments on this post. I also wanted to try the cafe mocha that Jenny recommended. I will give the sour cream glazed 2 thumbs up, but I still prefer a chocolate frosted from DD or an original Krispy Kreme, piping hot. The cafe mocha, however, now THAT is worth the trip, right there. Yummmmmmmmmmm…
