Coffee Talk 08.20.23

outfit details

Well, I hate to say it, but it feels like summer is coming to an end. As if on cue, even our weather feels like fall this morning! I woke up to 55° outside, with sunny skies and low humidity, so I turned off the A/C and threw open the doors and windows! I realize you all in the southern United States are having an unprecedented heat wave, so I’m sorry to rub it in, but it is absolutely beautiful here in Philly.

Becca is already finished with her last ever high school marching band camp. It culminated on Friday night with their Fall Preview, where parents and friends were invited to come out to the stadium and see this year’s show. It definitely got me in the mood for football games and cavalcades. And Caroline is heading back to college this morning. I can’t believe this is her third year already.

We have plans tonight to see Becca perform with her friends’ indie rock band, and I didn’t want to miss that, so I’ll be flying up tomorrow to help get Caroline settled into her new dorm. Meanwhile, David’s job hunt continues. Your prayers are appreciated for all of the above (especially safe travels for Caroline!)

It never gets easier to send them off, but this new rhythm of life is starting to feel more comfortable and predictable. I better get used to it, because next year I’ll be doing this times two. Speaking of which, Becca has senior pictures this week. It’s getting real over here!

In other news, I have been advised by both my chiropractor (who uses active release therapy to help treat my various injuries – there always seems to be something!) and my personal trainer to hold off on the 5K training until my ankle is better. It doesn’t hurt at all to run on it, but it’s still getting swollen and stiff at times, and I don’t want to further damage it, or something else if my body is unconsciously compensating for that weak link.

I’m bummed, because our weather is perfect for running right now, and I was really enjoying being back out there. But I don’t want to make matters worse, and I have a bad track record… no pun intended! I still plan to do the 5K because I love the atmosphere, and it’s for a good cause, but I’ll just walk it unless my situation improves drastically before then.

And while I’m whining about my propensity toward bodily injuries, I finally got around to having that MRI on my shoulder to figure out if I have a rotator cuff tear or what is going on there. The pain with certain movements isn’t getting worse, but it isn’t getting better either. My ortho ordered the MRI back before we left for Italy, and I follow up with him next week to see what it reveals.

At least I’m still allowed to do Pilates; in fact, it’s probably good for what ails me, but the first class I signed up for after my private lesson was canceled at the last minute. I signed up for another one later this week, after I get back from moving my daughter into college, and I’m looking forward to that!

Okay, I need to get off here so I have time to take a walk before church. I want to enjoy every moment of this glorious weather before it heats up again, which I’m sure it will. This is way too early for real fall to start here in Pennsylvania, but I’ll take what I can get.

Have a blessed Sunday!

  1. Our youngest heads back to East Stroudsburg University for his senior year next weekend. And our temporary work location is almost ready to open. This past month has gone by in such a blur. Starting to get organized for Jamaica at the end of September, and I can’t wait to get away. I am ready for Fall days in PA where it is warmer during the day and crisp at night so we can have the windows open and give our poor air conditioning a break. Happy Sunday!

  2. I haven’t even read the post yet but came here to say the dress you are wearing is gorgeous on you. The fit and color are perfect, as if specially made for you. Now I will go back and read the post.

    1. Hahaha…..so funny, this Deb too! I actually just ordered it before I read the post😍
      I did resist those boots though….for now😉

    2. LOL! Glad you like it. Just wanted to mention, you may want to size up if in between. I’m actually wearing the large here, although I have the black one in the medium from the #NSale, and it is probably the “right” fit. They didn’t have the green in medium and I actually like how it fits not quite so snug.

  3. I wish I could say the same about our weather, our morning low is 82 and a high of 107, yikes! Enjoy your walk.

I agree with Deb, love the dress and such a great color.

  4. If you can’t get to the Pilates studio, Move with Nicole, on YouTube, is awesome. I love that dress on you, too!

  5. OMG! I absolutely love that dress! So much so that I just ordered it! I hope I get it and it’s not cancelled, like Nordstrom sometimes does. I rarely pay full price for anything, but I didn’t care this time. I’m not sure where I will wear it, but I don’t care. Sometimes something just “grabs” you!

It has not been a hot summer at all here in Ohio, but I am still ready for fall.

  6. The green dress is stunning on you. We were having very high temps for NWOregon and are suppose to cool down this week so I’m ready for that. We just started getting smoke from the fires up North, so today looks hazy. I haven’t checked the air quality yet. Yesterday we got out to hike and enjoy the sun after I’d been down two weeks with Covid. That was a hard two weeks. I loved reading your post today with all the family news. I never did well with the “off to college” days. Glad it’s over. I’ll be praying for all 3 kids and you. I know it’s a lot on a mamas heart plus dealing with injuries. Keep us updated on your MRI results. As sad as it is to see Summer go, I love Fall. I’m just not ready for the holiday stuff to come to fast. Seems like we just had Christmas shopping lol. I do love early gift guide post though. I’m an early shopper to be done and relieve stress closer to the holidays. Enjoy your Sunday. I’m off to get ready for church.

    1. Here in the NW mountains of Montana we have been very warm as well as smokey! It least the mornings are in the 40’s!!

    2. I’m glad you’re feeling better. I am so not ready to be done with summer, but now that fall activities are starting, I guess I better get with the program! Definitely planning holiday gift guides in October.

  7. Wish I could say the same about our weather, we are watching pouring rain and 70mph winds (at present) as Hillary hits Southern California, my area is expected to get 4-8 inches of rain today. Glad I fertilized all the trees on our property yesterday, get them all healthy and green!

  8. I can’t wait until it’s Open Windows weather down here! Being cooped up inside due to the high temperatures and humidity has gotten old. I will definitely say prayers for all three of your children. I hope that Becca’s senior year of high school will be a great one for her. Take care of that ankle and good luck with the shoulder! I’ve had rotator cuff surgery and a follow-up surgery on the same shoulder, which is very common.

  9. I’m not sure if this applies to your situation, but check out Dr. Vonda Wright on Instagram. She’s an orthopedic surgeon who talks about musculoskeletal changes in peri menopause and menopause.

  10. I think you have a lot on your plate and you are overdoing your exercise regimen. Your body is telling you to slow down! Pilates is perfect for you, if you like it.
You look great in that dress. You seem to be adding more dresses to your wardrobe and that is a good added change!
I enjoyed vicariously your trip to Italy, one of my favorite places.

  11. I love your Coffee Talks and I especially love hearing about marching band!
What is their show theme this year? I hope Necca has a GREAT senior year in all things but especially band! 🎵🎶

  12. You look so sharp in that dress. I love the waist detail. I’m sorry to hear about your shoulder and ankle. I’ve had shoulder trouble but mine was muscular. Just prayed for you and your family.

    1. I like the boots too. The shaft is too long for me. The calf is probably too wide for my skinny legs too but so cute.
